I think it's more a case of history. When men married a virgin, they knew she was not pregnant by anyone else.

The notion is somewhat obsolete in modern society, except where it's used as a shaming tactic against unattractive men.

If they'd said simply:

"Virginity is a social concept"

... and left it at that, they might have created a wide-ranging and interesting discussion that could have included subjects such as: the relative social merits of female vs. male virginity; female virginity (and, by extension, chastity) and why all cultures venerate it; the bargaining power that female virginity grants (e.g. dowries in certain eastern cultures); and why mothers and female peers are significant powers in encouraging chastity in young women. Those discussions could have lead who knows where.

But they didn't. Because (apparently) the age-old, global, cross-cultural and complex valuing of a woman's virginity was entirely erected by selfish blokes with a stiffy.

[edit] And of course it's female virginity that is valued. Every other sort - should they exist - is trivial, if not risible.

Yeah, a dick can change a woman into a mother, and pregnancy changes her body forever. In the past, unwanted pregnancy could result in ostracism and even death, so yeah, virginity used to be valued. Here's the thing though: Virginity was valued in the past because it cost something: chastity. A big part of the hullabaloo over rape culture is feminists trying to re-inflate the value of the vagina even when its got a lot of miles on it.

Virginity itself was never important and Devin clearly doesn't understand what kind of power this gave the woman. Virginity was a proof that she had no other children, that she had never slept with any other man and thus that made her valuable. Not because she was "untainted and unspoilt", but because she didn't have children. And one of the biggest turn-offs a man can have is the prospect of having to take care of another man's child with his own resources.

Virginity became a stamp of quality in that sense. It heightened her value and that is powerful. If virginity is worthless (Which it is in a modern society) then why is it that people like this always go on about how pathetic male virgins are? This is the type of person who would tweet about how male virgins are just bitter or something like that, and therefore hate women.

I'm going to disagree. I'm a male virgin. I haven't had sex with anyone because I want to marry a girl and give myself to her and nobody else. I think what I'm doing shows dedication to whoever I end up with, and I hope they appreciate it.

Similarly; I want my bride to be a virgin, too. I want to be important enough to my wife that I'm worth her not dicking a bunch of men before me. I want our sex to be special and unique and not something that any other human being has a part of.

Is that so wrong?

If a woman keeps her virginity until marriage, I would think that would be a mild indication that she will be faithful during marriage. With marriage, huge risks are taken by the guy. If he is made a cuck by his wife, his life will be ruined forever. He can't really control what his wife does, so the only thing he can really do is to not marry someone that may be a cheater, similar to how a man's only option for not being a father is to not have sex/get raped. A good indication that a woman will turn you into a cuck if you marry her, is if she is promiscuous (she isn't a virgin). Thank you feminism for making slut shaming not socially acceptable and taking away one of the tools that guys have to make sure he is marrying someone who won't turn him into a cuck.

It's funny how progressives claim to be science lovers. They love science except when the rules are applied to humans.

Kohlberg's theory of moral development was attacked because out of the 6 levels, he and other scientists of the time could only find women getting to lever 3. Feminists then invented a new metric which has no basis in science. Interestingly, they figured that woman can get to level 6 and now it's ok to believe in Kohlberg's system again.

Basically "the science says x bad thing about women.... therefore the science is wrong."

In this same case it's true. There is a double standard that women who sleep around are less respected than men who do, but that's biological. Women have a different biology than men: they have eggs, eggs are not like sperm which is basically produced infinitely. Women have a very limited number of eggs, and as such, females in a mammal species are very sought after. So, what would this mean? A woman who is relatively attractive in most cases has very little difficulty finding a man. A often man has difficulty and needs to lift and such to find a woman.

So if a woman sleeps around she is doing something very easy. If a man sleeps around he is very successful in this particular thing. (whether or not sex is really worth all the effort on a higher level is another question)

So virginity means that a woman has not been with other men, which means that she has self control. It's not about the penis in any way.

Promiscuity and homosexuality were made taboo because they brought frightening diseases.

We have a better understanding of STD and STI transmission, treatments for it, and readily available protection against catching them.

At no other time in history could women and gay men have a chance to avoid what would of been certain death, so there is room to relax the standards...

At no other time in human history have families had this much control over childbirth or access to daycare...

It's hard to critique because it's essentially correct. A virgin is only a social concept because of the value placed on it when trading for brides. The idea of applying virginity to men is significantly more modern and never really carried any social wait to begin with.

It wasn't so much that men thought dicks were important though, it was because women's value was based on how confident you could be that when they performed their (as considered then) primary function of bearing children that the offspring would be yours and you wouldn't waste resources on another mans seed. Virginity was seen as a very valuable trait because it meant not only was the woman not pregnant with another man's child but she had been able to reach this point without laying with a man and so could probably be trusted not to lay with other men after ~~purchase~~ marriage.

Virginity as a concept is not really socially useful any more and could probably be dispensed with without any impact on anything short of internet arguments.

Pretty sure Virgin is more of a term used against men than women. It's always been a way of pressuring men to do their reproductive job by making them seem weak and un-charismatic unless they get some. With women virginity is either neutral or a positive trait.

If virginity "says" that women are changed by having sex with men, it also says that men are changed by having sex with women. But where sex is pressured and forced upon men to get their sexual usefulness out and make them want to earn sex (by working, improving the women's life, etc) so that they pass on their genes before they die, sex is something women are supposed to pick carefully from all the men that "prove" themselves as worthy.

Or, you know, it's just a cultural term to refer to the state of not having had sex before, and we can all just agree that's what it is and be done with it. Seriously, if y'all wanna go down this rabbit hole we're the ones that are going to win. Gonna go ahead and say "virgin loser" isn't an insult commonly put onto women.

Virginity as a concept was created as a method of avoiding disease. A man looking for a suitable wife wanted a woman who would be fertile and be able to carry healthy children to term. In order to avoid STDs before contraceptives and the ability to test for the diseases, the easiest way was to go for virgins. Everything scriptural that came after that was just a vestige of this concept (purity for having not had sex was literal, you are literally uncorrupted by, ya know, syphillis).
