It's probably Homer Simpson's fault.

[–]ByronsLastStand 53 points54 points55 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

"Average American man? Child abuser! Violent! Ha! All men are potentially abusive bigots!!"

I imagine that's the logic of some people. Not that Bart being a boy or Marge not doing much to stop him would make much difference to them. Tbh, while I am a fan of Futurama, I can't say Matt Groening ever does men a huge amount of favours, if any.

[–]SwiggityStag 28 points29 points30 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

If someone made a female character with those traits, they'd probably either get death threats, or feminists would worship the character as a feminist icon

[–]superhobo666 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It would be both, if a man created the character he'd be hunted down.

But the character would likely still end up being a feminism poster girl anyways.

[–]phantom_phallus 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There's Homer's UK sister, so Simpsons did it first.

[–]GothicDreamScape 44 points45 points46 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

A few academics have noticed. For example David Benetar ('The Second Sexism') and Paul Nathanson and Katherine Young. The latter duo have written five huge tomes on misandry. One of the books is titled legalizing misandry and explores the shocking ways that feminists (sometimes in league with the far right) have codified misandry into the legal system.

I dare anyone to read all five books and declare that we don't live in a profoundly misandrist society. Feminists have a lot to answer for. My personal opinion is that they will eventually be recognized in the same manner as we now recognize racists.

[–]RanaktheGreen 14 points15 points16 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

To be fair, if you are actually reading them for academic purposes, you shouldn't read just all five, you should then take a similar amount of work from their rivals and then weight the two equally when writing your own papers.

[–]Terminal-Psychosis 18 points19 points20 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

There are no academic works from the "rivals".

Simply belief-based ideology. Go ahead though, try to find some.

[–]RanaktheGreen 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I mean, I wouldn't call someone whose Masters and Doctorate is in religious studies writing on sociology free of belief-based ideology, which is why you go to the other side and figure out what they both agree on, that is likely the only thing provably true. Everything else you choose to belief is based on an ideology. But such is Academia.

[–]GothicDreamScape 30 points31 points32 points 8 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

I've read the other side. Stanton, Friedan, Steinem, McKinnon, Greer, Wolfe, Solanas, Gearhart, Fiorienza, Kimmel, Hooks, Federici.

I disagree with practically all of feminist theory. It doesn't even rise to the level of semi-plausible hypothesis, and is in fact counter-predictive.

Feminists thought feminism would make women happier; women are unhappier than ever. Feminists thought feminist societies would see a breakdown in gender roles; the most gender egalitarian societies have the strongest gender roles (eg in the Israeli Kibbutz and Scandinavia women are less likely to become engineers, whereas countries like Iran and China have the highest percentage). Feminists claimed that women would be happiest in the workplace; study after study has shown that housewives have the highest happiness rates of any female demographic. Feminists claimed that children would be happier and healthier if the "patriarchal family" was destroyed; it turns out fathers are crucial to child rearing and the children of single mothers tend to fare worse on most quality of life indicators. Feminists thought that placing women in power would create more peace; studies now reveal that Queens were more likely to initiate wars than Kings. Feminists thought that most rapes were caused by patriarchy; turns out most male rapists were abused by women as children, and men are just as likely to be coerced into sex. Feminists thought domestic violence was caused by "patriarchy"; turns out women are just as likely to be violent in the home. Feminists claimed that women are more empathetic toward men than vice versa; the opposite turned out to be true -- females have in group bias whereas males have out-group bias toward females. I could go on and on.

The point is that feminism is very much unlike most other academic disciplines. It is rooted in feelings, projection, hatred, grand conspiracy theories, and hostility to science. Since feminists have been wrong about literally everything, I surmise that it is only taken seriously because men enjoy supporting women in any way they can, and are therefore letting instinctual bias cloud their judgement.

So to summarize, I wouldn't expect a logical analysis of gender to have anything in common with feminist "theory" at all. Feminism has more in common with a particularly kooky religion than science.

[–]lebogglez3 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I also read a statistic that papers published in that subject have a ridiculously low amount of citations which really made me understand how much of an echo chamber that field of study must be, completely devoid of the scientific method!

Abusive, sexist "jokes" are not funny.

[–]AstroTibs 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I don't think it's that bad.

I think it's just a roundabout way of saying they've got shit for brains. Just low-level battle-of-the-sexes harmless stuff, not actually making a joke about violent brain surgery.

Part of MensRights is to justify that men can express feelings. Let's not overshoot that goal and become oversensitive.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It’s the fact that if an ad like this targeting women was found, Reddit would take it a lot more seriously since it would probably spark riots.

[–]AstroTibs 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well let's dial back on the "what if"s.

When and if that happens, let's just argue that the ad is not that bad, and similarly dissuade people who take the most violent interpretation out of it.

Seriously, this is an "injustice against men" only in the most circuitous and hypothetical way.

[–]Iamthesmartest 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Let's not overshoot that goal and become oversensitive.

LOL, far, far too late for that.

[–]fonduman 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't care about the joke, but I care about hypocrisy.

[–]AstroTibs 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's not hypocrisy unless we know that Reddit has refused to run a "mirror-image"-style ad. For all we know, nobody's making such ads and that's not something Reddit is responsible for.

Again, I say we wait until we see that hypocrisy first-hand instead of assuming it.

[–]Odz2427 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, and jokes like this should be able to go both ways. A similar joke from the male perspective would be met with indignation.

That is the point every time something like this is posted.

It is pointing out the hypocrisy and double standard. This is simple stuff.

[–]SpikedGIraffe 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Then we should be able to make the same jokes about women...but that is not the case.

Feminists bashed down this door. The Ladies went first, as is customary...now the men are walking through that same door. Welcome to Equality.

"Unappreciative?"
All men are just inherently worthy of thanks and praise? What?

I miss conversations about legal logistics.
When did this sub stop being about "Men's Rights" and start being about "Men's Feelings?"
There's so many actual ideological battles to fight, but so much of what I see on here just seems like you don't want other people to (somewhat ironically) have the "right" to even think badly about any man, ever.

Now it's like everybody just leaping at every chance possible to take something personally.
Like a desperation to jump in front of a metaphorical bullet.

deleted What is this?

[–]Th0rz669 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's about hypocrisy, double standards.

Like /u/Totally-not-a-scam said

[–]AUBURN520 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

People can think whatever they want; it doesn't really matter in the long run. But ads like this, that support negative thoughts about a group of people, are unacceptable. If this had been about black people: there would be an outrage; or if this were about women: they'd be up in arms.

This ad isn't really a personal attack on anyone, it's disrespectful to a massive range of people. It's more about giving us the same boundaries as everyone else.

[–]SoulUnison -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago* (11 children) | Copy Link

But if you're not even allowed to make this sort of broad-reaching joke, then basically all humor becomes off limits. The lesson seems to be, in the context of this subreddit, that the "victim" here is a massive community since it's 50% of humanity, and that matters, but when it's a minority that's being made fun of it's ok, because there's less of them, so less people are offended?

I posted this sort of thing on here a long while back when the "target" of the ad/comment/joke was gay men, and the answers I got from this subreddit were basically sentiments like: "Gay men have their own subs for this sort of thing, don't bring it here." "This sub is for men's rights, not gay rights." "We have stereotypes for a reason." And "Gay and bisexual men aren't really men."

/r/MensRights seems to go in big on the "Men come in all styles, don't belittle our emotions," but when presented with a man that's not "classically" masculine the community seems to get just as catty and dismissive as they can't stand when they perceive it's directed at them.

It makes it really hard to feel included or to even feel supportive of the message here, even as another man, when it seems like you can be turned against on a dime for not being the "right kind" of man. After a while it starts feeling like this is less a place to empower a gender and more a place to have the same kind of "Tumblr-esque" victim complex that a lot of time is spent here making fun of.

It feels like more and more as time goes on that this sub is less about legal injustices and damaging social paradigms than it is about someone being "mean" somewhere and bruising a fragile ego, and the community needs to do a lot more to combat that image or it doesn't get to complain that it's not being taken seriously.

[–]AUBURN520 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

This ad isn't a joke, though. I know most guys have a good enough sense of humor to recognize a joke and not take it seriously, and this isn't that.

As for the comments about gay men, I haven't been in this sub long enough to see those, but you're right (on a small level) that a part of this sub is radical in the same way as tumblr. /new on any sub is gonna be pretty terrible because it's where the minority get to voice their opinion the most.

I feel like this sub was created as a response to the hypocrisy of the new and terrible side of the female rights movement more than to actually empower men, if you get what I'm saying.

[–]SoulUnison -3 points-2 points-1 points 8 years ago* (9 children) | Copy Link

How is it not a joke?
The only way I can see it not being a joke is if someone reads it as a literal call to violence.
I definitely don't think a random t-shirt company is trying to say that you should actually mutilate and lobotomize all men.

To me this is pretty much in the same arena as "Ladies and shopping, am I right, fellas?"

And it wasn't "small" or "a part."
The post didn't just get one or two off-hand comments before disappearing into the void, the overwhelming and heavily upvoted sentiment seemed to be "Take that to a LGBT subreddit, this place is for Men's rights."
A lot of people on here are the type that use "gay" as a pejorative, and they don't want that challenged, while at the same time declaring that they have the "right" to never be the butt of even a minor joke, ever.

[–]GothicDreamScape 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

You're full of shit. I've been visiting this sub for years and gays are welcome here.

[–]GothicDreamScape 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

More likely you're just a troll/liar/feminist.

Some of our best posters are gay.

Put your money where your mouth is -- go ahead and make a post saying "I'm gay, do MRA's support gay rights?" Or "How do MRA's feel about the persecution of gays in Chechnya?" etc. See what kind of responses you get and which responses get upvoted.

[–]SoulUnison 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What possible reason would I have to be "trolling" this sub?
Even just in this specific comment chain you can see I'm concerned about the direction things are going and wanting the sub to work harder to be taken more seriously.

And I'm a gay man - even a cursory glance at my account history would make that obvious.

I think you just can't handle even indirect criticism, and so you had to lash out angrily and with vulgarity.

[–]GothicDreamScape1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

That's irrelevant. When a post here makes it to r/all everyone comments. Not just MRA's.

Go ahead and put your money where your mouth is: make a new post in R/all that will only be seen by MRA's and perhaps a troll or two.

Yea, I misspoke when I said it wasn't a joke. I was just a bad joke. You've got a point though, no one should care. But they do.

[–]psilorder 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It gets weird.

One group jokes about the other and the other group reacts. The other group jokes about the first group and some go "should you make jokes about that group if you don't like them making jokes about you?" It gets dismissed, "no one cares" It goes on and eventually you start caring.

Wives are a lot like steel wagon wheels. Useless by modern standards, a waste of space, no one should have one even as decoration, and any that are present should be purged from existence.

Am I doing it right?

All jokes aside, I would be fine with this if it wasn't a paid advertisement.

[–]hashtagwindbag 56 points57 points58 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I wouldn't. This is the kind of tepid humor you'd find on the side of a coffee mug at the Hallmark Store.

I'm not offended by the sentiment, just the shitty delivery.

[–]superhobo666 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This isn't something you'd see in a Hallmark store, they'd be too worried about potential lawsuits to sell anything like that.

This is something you would see on someones Etsy or whatever site people use to sell their shitty crafts nowadays.

Hello and welcome to /r/MensRights. If you are not a subscriber, please take a moment to understand what you are seeing.

This subreddit is about the issues faced by men in our society.

We welcome healthy debate and you won't be banned merely for disagreement. It is common here to reject feminist ideology, but that doesn't mean we hate women or oppose equal rights. Rather, we seek to expand those equal rights to include men.

These are some of the best discussions we've had. There is also a documentary made by a feminist who investigated our movement. If you want to know more about the issues we are concerned with, try these books: The War Against Boys by Christina Hoff Sommers or The Myth of Male Power by Warren Farrell.

Thank you for being open minded.

It’s really cringey how you can’t go to any popular Reddit thread regardless of which sub it’s in without seeing a long chastising mod post asking everyone to behave.

[–]theothermod 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't see any chastisement, only explanation.

Women are like jack-o-lanterns: once you hollow them out, they're not as seedy.

See how that sounds, Reddit?

[–]U2_is_gay 51 points52 points53 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I actually don't mind it. A little playful jabbing. I just don't like the hypocrisy of the fit that would be thrown if this were about women. I'd rather live in a world with playful jabs.

[–]bufedad 37 points38 points39 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Seems sexist to me if you change husbands to wives, so that's an easy way to check.

1) Silly, sexist ad. Report stuff if you see ads like this.

2) I wish this sub was more about bringing men's rights up and less about bringing women down. Half the comments are trash.

Yeah, because that's how the Jim Crowe laws were abolished... not being sensitive about them, and just letting them exist.

Not playing by ideological opponents rules is one thing.

[–]bufedad 25 points26 points27 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This is an ad targeted at women featuring a harmless joke about men.

Harmless? Absolutely... unless this type of joke were about women.

Feminists have decided that all humor that paints women in a bad light is sexist, but men can still be bashed to their hearts content.

It's a double standard that should be called out.

And yet I'm able to let it slide off my back. I feel like there's a deeper level here where your inferiority complex won't allow this to just be what it is: a joke. If the premise of this joke is that wives nag, and then a similarly violent solution was the punchline, let's assume it did indeed cause controversy. The fact that a joke would cause any controversy at all should upset you to your very core. This seems like a desperate attempt to gain some clout in the particular clan you've associated yourself with instead of putting your focus on things like divorce and custody laws. There we might agree on some real hypocrisy. You've gone too deep in the rabbit hole. A joke? I'm embarrassed for anybody who is upset by this as a man and a sentient being.

The thing is that something like that is more touchy for women, it is something that is much more realistic for them than it is for a man. Women tend to get the worst due to their physical limitations. If you can't see that there are and always will be fundamental differences between men and women then i don't know what to say. It's just the same as telling a feminist that women are generally physically weaker than men. It's true and they don't like it. Differences are not bad, you will never be able to smack a girls ass as a joke and not be seen as a creep. A woman can. You can't just look past real world implications as much as you seem to want to. It's no different than not saying stuff like "you're like my slave" to a black person. Yes i'm nearly positive you don't see the problem there and if you don't then i once again don't know what to say.If it is just dumb though, maybe don't act like i assume you think feminists always do and instead take the high road and shrug it off?

Agreed. People on this sub make similar jokes all the time. People are just looking for reasons to get mad. Post like this really make me want to unsubscribe from this sub

Yep, MRAs are just right wing feminists. I thought me using a female body part as an insult would stop any downvotes tho :(

Jesus stop being sensitive and stick to real issues for MRA. This shit is a harmless joke

Yes, and jokes like this should be able to go both ways. A similar joke from the male perspective would be met with indignation.

Don't think so honestly, people make jokes about both husbands and wives like this pretty commonly. Maybe some snowflakes would get offended, but not many I think

You might want to read up on the current state of feminism.

Nobody is mad at the joke itself, it’s what it represents.

We know. We're not debating that.
