You should seriously question the lesson.

It sounds like you've had a good life. That's a good thing. You want to not be a pussy? Accept that bad things will happen and be kind and reasonable when they do. There's no artificial sweet spot that's gonna make you a real tough guy/capable of enduring real trauma. I'd argue that wishing for those kinds of opportunities is the real indictator of privilege

Ever shoot a gun? Find someone to take you out shooting. Do 5-stand round or something.

Outdoor activities, lots of them. Canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, trail hiking, mountain climbing.

Its not the 101st airborne, but its a start.

Of course there have been some tough times in the past. But in fairly recent human history, certainly well within living memory, there was much more of a sense of community than there is today and people used to look out for each other.

I'm old enough to have seen this shift, although I'm not quite old enough to have witnessed the halcyon days that people talk about in Britain. Those of an older generation will speak fondly of the war years, and also the 1950s when rationing was taking place.

The simple reason for this is that there was a spirit of community and people looked out for each other. I cannot absolutely confirm that this was the case, but I can reasonably assume it was the case as, firstly, I've seen the shift away from this in my lifetime, and, secondly, why else would you feel misty eyed about living through a world war?

While I've no doubt that the Second World War was no picnic, it's much easier to cope with that, or indeed anything, if you feel part of something bigger than yourself (even if this is, to some extent, a delusion).

We are often told that today's kids are cosseted, sheltered, etc. But I personally think life is way tougher now than when I was growing up, with no sense of community, a real fundamental lack of warmth in the general culture, 24/7 media bombardment to contend with, and an extremely challenging economic situation prevalent.

And technology has exacerbated the extent to which we're remote from each other, creating what I consider to be an extremely atomised culture. Although young people don't know that this isn't normal because they've never experienced anything else.

On the whole, I don't think it's as easy growing up now as people would generally have us believe.

Huge part of the people who fought in WW2 were conscripts. They didn't have the choice. You're taken away from your home and informed that constitutional human and civil rights and freedoms don't apply to you anymore until further notification.

And they cried. Not only 18-year-old suckers, but 35-year-old men as well. And nobody mocked them for it.

You would last a moment. And a day. And a week. And even a couple years. Because in these conditions, nobody asks you "sir, would you last, please?" Nobody gives you the choice not to last.

Everyone's different. Forget about external validation, like whether others consider you a pussy or a Chad, and just go do the things you've always wanted to do even if getting there is hard. Delay rewards and gratification.

Yes. Your lives were too fucking easy and your parents were too lazy / dysfunctional / deficient in conventional values to teach you hard work and responsibility, making you soft and weak and lazy. Challenge yourself to do something really hard without taking any shortcuts and don't let yourself quit.

Have you ever ate something really, really spicy? Order a really spicy sauce and use it as a mouthwash.

What's the furtherst you've ever walked in one day? If war were to break out tomorrow you might have to walk 50 miles with barely any sleep/food. Try how long you can walk without feeling like breaking down. Then continue walking until you really feel like breaking down.

How long do you have to run at full speed until you have to vomit?

How long can you hold your breath? How long can you force yourself if you really try? Now set a timer that's one minute longer than that and imagine that you've got to do it or otherwise your whole family will get killed. Can you force yourself do it longer now?

How long can you stay awake? 1 day? 3?

How long can you manage not to eat anything? Go to bed hungry and try to beat your survival instinct.

There are a thousand challenges you can set yourself and every time you will get better at ignoring this voice.

It won't be healthy and it won't be easy, but if you want to achieve this you've got to stop worrying about those things.

Yes. Our grandparents lived to see the Depression, World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War and the Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam, and swore that we should never have to live through that - which is not, itself, an ignoble goal.

Unfortunately for that goal, adversity builds character, and relatively speaking, the kind of adversity that builds the strongest character is the kind of adversity which is paid for in blood.

We never had that kind of adversity.

Take a Karate (be careful which one you pick; McDojos are common), BJJ, or Boxing class. One where they actually physically challenge you; one that's generally safe, but where they aren't afraid to go full contact or roll with you.

You'll learn how you react to genuine, high stakes situations. You'll learn how to move your body in a combat situation competently, you'll become acquainted with and raise the ceiling of your capabilities, and you'll develop a bit more character.
