You guys really need a Gender Studies 101 class. This has been discussed for decades. Women's erotica generally humanizes both people involved and centers the woman's experience and agency. Men's porn has historically been built around objectification and visual consumption. That's why people don't treat these genres as morally equivalent.

I think you're trying to compare erotic books/books with erotic scenes to video porn rather than "women's" and "men's" porn. I'd say there's less of an impact of problematic things in written material because:

1) No real people, including voice actors, are having to act it out or being exploited by porn companies.

2) Video content tends to be more influential and addictive than written. People consciously or subconsciously think it's real (much of it is marketed as being "real couples" and not acting, whereas a book is obviously just a fictional story.

3) It's not standard practice to masturbate while reading a book, and masturbation is really powerful reinforcement.

It's fiction. I don't want it in real life. It's just entertainment.

I think the actual line here is written erotica vs porn videos. Not men’s vs women’s.

That being said, I think by that line, anything written is less problematic than anything on video tbh. I personally don’t watch porn, partially because when you pull up a video there’s no way to guarantee that everyone involved totally consented to not only being in a video but having it uploaded online. In a book/story, there’s no real people involved. It’s pure fantasy.

Things that are taboo or even just illegal require people to actually act them out or make them look real for a video, but not in a book. There’s actually a lot of porn out there that caters to certain “taboos” that is straight up just real. Like people will upload actually illegal content all the time. This creates problems for people who watch a lot of porn from a young age thinking that certain things are real, achievable, or even socially acceptable. In a book nobody has to actually act anything out.

I also want to point out that people are incredibly critical of “women’s” erotica. In fact I feel like I see more criticism of spicy books than I do of the porn industry.

Yes its different. Men and women experience different consequences from certain themes and even just the medium itself.

Sexual function goes up for women and down for men with porn use. Partnered sexual satisfaction has almost no impact on women with frequent porn use compared to men. It seems men are having issues with using sexual content while it has a more positive impact on women. The themes might not even play much of a role itself but it seems obvious that there is a correlation between mens sexual function and the usage of porn.

This is why there is a much stronger stigma around men consuming certain content vs. Women consuming certain content. Although most men will just say its normal anyway.

A few things here

Porn involves real people and is known to be an industry rife with abuse. It is impossible to know what the actors are being put through behind the scenes. That’s why it’s harder to argue written content is just as bad. It’s someone’s imagination going onto paper.

If it is animated….schoolgirl content is still pedo content that tries to claim it isn’t by saying they are “barely legal 18”. The fantasy is still taking advantage of a naive teen.

Same with stepsis and stepmom. People try to say it isn’t incest because they aren’t literally related, but those are family members.

The themes most heavily criticized are themes that are meant to be from the perspective of the predator. Shoplifting scenarios where the guard has sex with the detainee, giving a woman a ride and asking for a sexual favor, schoolgirl fantasies, etc. are from the perspective of preying on someone

In billionaire vampire erotica, the person with the power is the billionaire vampire and the reader is the one being objectified or abused (ravished). The theme isn’t possible in real life and it’s not incest or about teenagers.

I think some themes between men and women have clear differences. Ravishment aka “rape fantasy” from some hot guy is not the same fantasy as men watching schoolgirl loli hentai.

I also think the video format of men’s porn is questionable. But if men were to read step-whatever manga or erotica, that’s whatever.
