I believe her, and I'm frankly shocked at the attempts to shrug this off.

He was only 17? So what? In the state of Maryland, where they were a the time, a 17-year-old accused of attempted rape is tried as an adult. She was only 15.

Is she credible? She has nothing to gain from coming forward, discussed this in therapy years ago, has received death threats, passed a polygraph, and has requested the FBI investigate her claims. People telling a lie do not want the FBI to check if they are lying.

Is this "horseplay"? He put his hand over her mouth so she couldn't scream. His friend blocked the door. You don't do that unless you know what you're doing is wrong.

Can "one mistake" "ruin his life"? I encourage you all to read the piece in the Atlantic on the topic. The author (a conservative woman) also experienced an attempted rape--and in her case, the guy apologized, both in writing and in person. This wasn't one mistake--it was doing something monstrous and then, for years, refusing to own up to it or try and make amends. And it's not a "ruined life" to have to settle for your current well-paid lifetime appointment rather than a different, more powerful, lifetime appointment.

Well since this is pretty much the shitty remake of the Clarence Thomas hearings and the "evidence" is even flimsier and the timing too convenient, even in the wake of the #MeToo era, I expect this to not be very effective, tis but a stumbling block the Democrats are using to prevent the nomination and a tired one at that.

I think he did what she described in her therapy session.

In other news I think many 17 year drunk boys who grew up with entitled views do what she described he did everyday.

I don’t have any strong opinions on whether he should be nominated or whether or not what he allegedly did is nbd or not.

Not that invested.

Generally I believe juveniles should be given second chances. But typically only after a show of accountability, contrition, and remorse.

Kavanaugh is a dumpster fire that ended up igniting on top of a dumpster fire. We don't need more goddamn Federalist Society garbage piles becoming judges.

Either way, she brought it up to her therapist 6 years ago. It should be investigated, just like anything else. Kavanaugh seems to have a handful of woman issues cropping up at this point, so the pattern of behavior isn't totally inconsistent.

But mostly, Kavanaugh is a dumpster fire inside the body of a fat middle age man.

There's all sorts of reasons women may not come forward. Being scared, thinking it was their fault (kids can really internalize this sadly), being their word against his if the guy was in a position of power etc.

There's also strength in numbers. Once Cosby was exposed that really was the turning point where women realized they're not alone and can feel safe coming forward about these creeps. The metoo movement and social media letting us all connect in a way we couldn't in the 80s 90s or even most of the 2000s.

Yes I'm very liberal so I hate Trump and Kavenaugh anyway and this just reinforces what scum he is. But I'd say the same if it was Bernie too

I still lean a little left (not sure why I do anymore honestly) and this to me looks like an obvious attempt from the left to stall the nomination until the midterms when the Democrats may gain control of the senate.

Still even if the story is 100% true, it happened when he was incredibly young. We have all done something stupid or something we aren't proud of when we were younger. I'm not sure if it really is reflective of his current character.

I don't really give so much a shit about the truth or otherwise of this particular instance, it will all work itself out and I'm not American. Hopefully you've got provisions in the USA to take a little more time and effort over a process when these things are raised as issues.

What I do not agree with and yet I've been seeing all over is the thinking that goes that just because the legal system goes a bit lighter on under 18s that means victims have some sort of responsibility to recontextualise offenses in a way that also goes light on the offender, and then at some point stop talking about it altogether, forever.

If someone did something very bad to you then you should have the right to talk about it, to tell others about it. Or not. Or talk about it then go quiet. Or be quiet then later talk about it. The only obligation is don't lie.

If you did something very bad to someone else then you live the rest of your life with the possibility that one day at a critical moment the person who is interviewing you (or that you're on your second date with... or who is working out whether you make a good candidate for something) will reach over, grab a bunch of notes they've made obviously after having a lengthy discussion with someone, raise one eyebrow and say "now what's this I hear about..." and if that thing was decades ago well maybe it makes a difference or maybe it doesn't, that will be up to the judgment of the person taking the measure of your character.

Also, good reputation wouldn't be so valuable if it wasn't so fragile. Some reputations have to break if good reputation as a concept is to mean anything. Of course the opposite is also true, if bad reputation is to mean anything we don't want good reputation to break too easily.

Anyhow... is she credible? IDK. I don't think her coming forward now means anything much about her credibility, a lot of people do try to forget stuff until their conscience starts bothering them and let's face it if there's any time when a victim's conscience and sense of not having done enough to get justice is going to really start bothering her it is a moment like this. I think we've all of us at some stage been in a situation where we thought "well shoot, without me doing something there's no justice" and then made a move at that point. We've all of us, for example, had suspicions about someone and been uneasy then eventually taken those suspicions to someone. Well at least we have if we've lived ordinary lives and don't lack in perceptiveness. It doesn't take a genius to work out that in terms of timing "I'd better do something now or there is no justice" superficially is the same as "I'd better do something now or it will be too late to stitch him up."

She should come forward and speak before the Judiciary Committee. Kavanaugh should then be able to defend himself.

If she refuses, Republicans should just confirm him.

The word of one person with no evidence about an alleged crime 36 years ago would be any Defense Attorney’s dream.

no date and location, and it was several decades ago, how can the FBI play timecop with something this vague? Even a murder case has a date and last seen location as leads.
has the accuser agreed to appearing in front of the committee to tell her story?

I understand when people bring up the fact that this is a lifetime position so we have to be weary of these accusations and verify them before proceeding. However, the way how Democrats just kept telling people to shut up and take her words for it is pretty fishy.

Its impossible to know what happened and even if its true the statute of limitations will make this hard to know . Ita basically a he said she said thing and to top it off they couldnt have made a bad nomination process worse than it already was .

Currently, in the era of Pound MeToo and TimesUp, it will be quite effective. I think if Christine Blasey Ford testifies and does well, Kavanaugh might not get the votes. (I can't remember, does Senate confirmation require a bare majority or 2/3?)

I believe something happened between Kavanaugh and Ford (when he was 17 and she 15). In my mind, what a man does at 17 has little relationship to what he is today. Most men have pushed the envelope and escalated too far too hard with some girl at some point in their lives. But, today, in the MeToo era, we're now going back 30+ years to destroy men for what they did as teens. So if Ford testifies and emotes properly, it will be tough for Kavanaugh.

Of course coming to this thread the people who believe her story are the exact people I would have expected to believe her story. Or take her side rather, since this is political character assassination and they will support her whether it's an obvious lie or not because of ideological reasons. Bloops don't care about the truth, they just care about winning. One fundamental difference between them and terps.
