Our notions of consent seem to diverge a lot on this sub. And I actually believe this is a serious problem. It's hard to have a discussion about something as complicated as human sexuality, or as contentious as rape, without having reasonably understood standards to appeal to. Some (like MommaJAMS) believe Yes means Yes is a reasonable standard for consent, while others think reducing sexuality down to a verbal contract might create more problems than it solves. I fall into the latter category.

Let's consider the hypothetical of getting on a roller coaster at an amusement park. Does one ever verbally consent to getting on a roller coaster?

No, people reasonably assume we give consent because we are willingly getting into a car and putting the safety devices in place. We are engaging what I like to think of behavioral consent. We would all know and recognize immediately if someone were being forced to ride the roller coaster against their will. They would be screaming in protest, begging to be let off, presumably against some external force which, despite their protests, wouldn't let them off the ride.

And this is my problem with Yes means Yes advocates. Sexual behavior is much more like a roller coaster preparation than an autistic set order of contractual obligations.

Also we let drunken idiots, but not incapacitated ones, consent to get on roller coasters, so in my book they can consent to fuck.

So what are your personal opinions about what constitutes and violates consent?
