It would seem that if most men are having sex, that provides an a priori reason for thinking that such men don’t have high standards (if they’re having sex with different partners).

Men and women have different standards for who they’d sleep with, who they’d have a kid with, who’d they bring home to meet and parents and marry, etc. Of course individuals’ standards will vary also, and the intensity of such standards and people’s commitments to them depend on a variety of factors as well (e.g. the attractiveness of the object of their desire).

I’m agnostic on which sex has ‘higher standards,’ but I think a lot of comments here which claim that women do are based on implicit assumptions about the particular standards were talking about (e.g. good enough to sleep with vs. good enough to be in a relationship with).

So why the complaint about women’s standards when most guys meet the standard?

Because meeting a high standard generally has a cost in effort/time/money/quality of life/etc...???

If working literally any job required a college degree, most people would get college degrees by necessity, but people would complain about it and be justified in complaining about it.

None of this says anything about the relative desirability of the women these men are able to have sex with, which in order for men to have high standards here would need to be shown that men aren’t just able to have sex but have sex with their statistical equivalent.

Just let your genes do their work and you are pretty much set in 99% of men's standards. Don't be fat, and don't do meth. That's pretty much all the advice you will ever need.

The GSS doesn't have an adequate sample size for a reliable fine grained analysis. Men want many, many women, yet they are only able to squeeze sex out of the small number of ones they don't want it from. Women want sex from small, small, small number of men and they don't want to give it to the vast, vast, number of men that would give them.

That's the difference. Men compromise for sex, women almost never. For men, sex is essential, for women it's just one small aspect of their man.

You're probably right. I'd imagine most men could get sex with someone if they were desperate enough... I'm assuming the statistics didn't exclude paying for sex.

I think it might be more fair to say "women have higher standards than men given an equivalent looks match"
