Literally every single time I post here, between 1/3 to 2/3 of the comments on my post are from people who ostensibly did not read the post.

It's pretty clear they read the title, didn't bother reading anything in the post, and then reply with their opinion. These types of comments can be sorted in 3 categories:

  • Commenter just give their opinion about the title without addressing any of the points in the post.
  • Commenter will argue by repeating a point that was already addressed in the post without adding any extra argument, context or criticism.
  • Commenter assumes the post is about X when the post is arguing Y. Commenter then argues against X.

Example 1 - Either did not read or just didn't care arguing anything (probably both)

Example 2 - Thinking the post is about criticising the choice of monogamy when literally the first sentence says it's not (and it's repeated 3 times later in the post)

Example 3 - That point was addressed in the post, but this Redditor clearly doesn't know.

I could post many more examples, but you get the idea. This is not only on my posts, this is a trend I see repeated on each and every posts.

This is a subreddit for debate and discussions. I don't think any constructive discussion or debate can be had if people don't even bother reading posts.

Hence I propose a new rule: reading the post is mandatory. Comments that ostensibly did not care to read and/or are ostensibly not trying to argue can be reported and repeated offenses can lead to bans.
