I grew up in the fine jewelry business, my mom managed really nice jewelry stories while I was growing up. Mined diamonds are so overrated it’s ridiculous, why do we need a Diamond plucked out of the ground by people forced into this labor or children? It’s so barely regulated. In many cases these people are forced into Diamond slavery.

I just helped my best guy friend buy a lab grown Diamond for his fiancé, the ring he bought was absolutely incredible and if it had been a “mined” Diamond it would have been 20k, the ring he purchased came out to 4K. It’s absolutely gorgeous, now that the fda has approved the sale and classification of lab grown diamonds there truly isn’t a reason to buy a mined stone at this point.

It's a rock. The ONLY thing that makes it special is what it symbolizes. The only time hearing about a ring's composition impresses me is when I hear the couple did something meaningful to them, like get inscriptions or have the band made out of material from a sentimental source.

Mine was, thankfully, moissanite. I'm still pissed at myself for losing the original and hold out hope I'll rediscover it in the house somewhere some day, but I eventually lose any jewelry I wear daily. I'd feel even worse if I'd gone with the "make the proposal ring an expensive statement" philosophy.

I’m in a similar situation but I’m leaning toward gemstones or moissanite. It’s really about whatever makes you happy. Maybe do a little research on how diamonds became the go to engagement ring and you may feel less inclined to buy into it.

Mined diamonds are actually not rare.

Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds, they have the exact same chemical and physical properties as mined diamonds. The only difference is one was grown in the earth and the other in a lab.

My engagement ring is mined diamonds and has a 2.5 carat center stone with round brilliants and baguettes all around the shaft. It’s big and wide and very much a late 90’s style.

I am currently looking into getting another, more modern ring and am looking at lab diamonds. (I will always keep my original engagement ring and I’m more attached to my wedding band, so I will not change that.)

Moissanite is a beautiful, more frugal alternative to diamonds! Slightly less hard of a stone and a little more sparkly.

I went with something else, something vintage and non-traditional for mine. It was very inexpensive but also very fragile and fell apart a few years in. Now I just wear my simple wedding band and I really enjoy that. It's so funny to me how much I treasured my engagement ring and how little I've missed it. My wedding band is most important.

I have a lab-grown diamond and I wouldn't want it any other way. I personally don't see the need for having a mined diamond, nobody can tell, and they are ethical. Mined diamonds run the risk of having blood money attached and they are inflated in price due to false rarity claims. Lab grown also have fewer defects and are "purer" in a way... they are not mined and are therefore better for the environment... and what gets more flawless than a diamond spared from a flawed creation process? At the end of the day, you will have a ring on your finger that he chose, bought, and gifted you. That's the most flawless thing, your own love story, regardless of ring.

The bowerbird collector in me really likes the idea of rare, pretty rocks so I get where you're coming from. But on the other hand, if you want to collect rare pretty rocks why care so much about one ring, and why limit yourself to diamonds at all? For example, I prefer gemstones with color over diamonds. And if you think about it, you could probably get an entire collection of rings, bracelets, earrings, etc. with diamonds & other gemstones over the course of the next 5 or 6 decades.

But the whole point of this is that it's not just a ring in your jewellery box. It's an engagement ring. It's meant to be a promise of marriage, and more pessimistically, something you can sell if he has sex with you and leaves (on that note, they're very poor stores of value, because a quick google tells me the resale value is 20%-60% of the value when it was new). If you want to collect rare pretty rocks then start a collection and leave this particular rock out of it, because its entire reason for being is sentimental.

I've watched a video of a guy throwing a $150k ring into the ocean. There are also stories of women treasuring the candy/plastic rings men used to propose to them. The emotional factors really outweigh the material factors when it comes to these.

I have both mined, lab, and even a moissanite. My original engagement ring was a small mined diamond since we were super young when we got married. Then on our 15 year anniversary, husband spoiled me with a 2ct center lab grown diamond 3-stone ring which is amazing. After having our child, he gifted me a moissanite in a bezel setting that I can wear when I’m running around with the kiddo and my ring might get knocked.

Mined diamonds aren’t rare and you have the whole “blood diamond” thing to contend with. Lab diamonds are indistinguishable to mined to the naked eye. Depending on the growth process, a jeweler may be able to see growth striations that are from the lab growth process but not always. Spend the money on the best cut. I’ve never had anyone ask if my ring is lab grown and it’s not info I offer up. No one ever asked if a ring is earth mined. If I had the 2ct stone right after college, I may have had more people ask about the stone. As for moissanite, it’s a great stone too but I can spot the difference from diamonds when comparing my rings. It lacks depth and certain cuts like emerald cut don’t look diamond-like in moissanite to me.

My recommendation is to go with lab grown in the size you want. Go with a broker who works in lab diamonds like Ada Diamonds or someone else who won’t try to push you towards mined.

Think of mined diamonds to jewelry as Starbucks is to coffee. A lot of money spent to show off. I got a lab grown and it's just as pretty. I don't complain. In the end you're married. That's the goal. The ring just shows your married. That is it.

I have both. My ER is a family ring (natural) and I also have a lab created right-hand ring, earrings etc. the only natural diamonds I own are family heirlooms. Ethically I just feel that is best for me. I can tell the difference on my own but I’ve never been able to tell the difference on others. My cousin just got a 2ct oval engagement ring that is so dreamy. Whatever you decide I’m sure it will be beautiful.

I LOVE my lab grown diamond. I personally think it is very foolish to pay 3 times the price for something that is exactly the same as what you would be getting otherwise, right down to the molecular level.

Here’s an example: my cousin’s ring is the same size and VERY similar to mine, but she is very materialistic and demanded that her diamond be mined. Her ring cost $30,000!! At a recent family event all our family members were comparing our rings side by side and you cannot tell any difference. Mine is just as sparkly and just as beautiful in every way, and people kept joking how we better not take them off for fear we will get them mixed up. When one of our closer family members asked her why it was so important that she had a diamond from the earth and what the difference was, literally all she had to say was “well mine came with a certificate.” You pay just for the materialism and nothing more.

When family members asked me how much my ring cost and whether it was lab or earth grown, I just played coy and said I didn’t ask what hubby spent on the ring and that I don’t care where the diamond came from since it’s the most beautiful ring I’ve ever seen. What my ring cost is no one else’s business.

I have a diamond engagement ring and I only wear it to go out. I live in my wedding band. Personally I don’t really get the hype of real diamonds or flashy rings. It doesn’t really prove anything and it’s just a marketing ploy.

I used to want a mined diamond until I realized a quality lab diamond is 10000% the same and there was no reason to overpay for a rock that I could lose. The ice made in my freezer is the same as the ice made in nature. If it makes you feel better there are also tiers of lab diamond based on manufacturing and cut quality, and you could focus the search on a top tier stone. I went with a 7k lab diamond cut in Belgium for its unique light performance but you could find one with the same specs on paper, made in China or India, for half that.

Mine is moissanite. You would never know it isn’t a diamond. I’m OBSESSED with it. Moissanite refracts light differently than diamonds, and in my opinion, is much more beautiful. So it’s basically a more “rainbow like” diamond.

Full text: I am pretty sure my boyfriend will be proposing within the next 6 months or so. I told him I am ok with a lab grown diamond since they are more affordable. How do you all feel about them? Part of me feels like a mined diamond is so traditional and rare and means more….but I know he cannot afford a 2 carat natural diamond and that is the size I want. Thoughts please. My ring is just a gold band. I love stones, but it was what he could afford (he had already spent a lot of money to come visit me, and we needed money to get married at the courthouse and then for me to go back to his home by bus). Also, I'm so clumsy, I know I would have ruined a ring with stones by now, and that would have made me feel awful. He is very affectionate when it comes to buying me things and he's a great gift-giver, but he does view expensive jewelry and cut flowers as wastes of money, but he will gladly get me things that go with hobbies, electronics, media, etc.
