You know, I think we are really missing a salient point in all this.

An all female panel of judges awarded the top place to a boy. Or, possibly, they decided to obfuscate the gender of the inventor to the judges.

Both are admirable things. I think it is worth noting that they chose to not give in to bias, and legitimately pick who they thought was the best.

The initial idea was stupid for its stated aims. All it's saying is that girls can't compete with boys in science competitions, so they need to have their own girl-only competition. OK, well, real life is not a girl-only competition.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that smart curtains is pretty cool, I mean at least it can reduce spending when it comes to like hospitals and shit. But I fully agree the energy controller is quite above and beyond the rest.

If you'd ever owned a home, you'd know that curtains are can be a crucial element of energy conservation. A few years ago, I put up some thick blackout curtains that paid for themselves in four months. Having curtains or some other opaque window shade that could manage itself with respect to the position of the sun would be pretty fucking sweet, IMO.

Am I saying that men aren't, on average, better at technical thinking than women? Certainly not. That much is a fact. I just think this is a dumb thread. One boy wins one science fair and homie here declares males to be the superior gender. Apparently logic, reason, and good statistical practice go out the window when you have a point to make.

Wonder what the male to female ratio was here though. For some reason I automatically assume it to be mostly women then a handful of men. But, if they opened the competition to boys afterwards, they probably didn't have enough entrants to begin with. If the ratio was equal men to women it isn't exactly a shock that a guy won the same way it wouldn't be for any other competition involving both sexes.

Fuck me! I got hired on as a general contractor by IBM when I was in undergrad and most women just couldn't take the job. To be fair it did fucking suck. Long hours of coding, and then mind-numbing meeting after mind-numbing meeting, but the pay was great for someone who's essentially a high-school grad. The women I worked with would just do bullshit like health-checks for switches and servers, perhaps check in on some storage devices, but when it was time for real work they were off to chatting.

Maybe it's just knowing that if you're not earning your keep they'll fire your ass. We went through massive layoffs and half of those dumb bitches kept their jobs, even though they had male counterparts who had verifiable stronger work records. One of the guys that got laid-off had nearly four times the verified work as one of the women that kept her job.

Bullshit! I guess it's just a testiment to working as hard as you can, and then a little more, but it's a little scary considering you an be the top performer in your company, but if shit hits the fan you may not be more valuable than a single mother of 5 who doesn't actually know WTF she's doing and misses work regularly(takin' care ah dem keeds!)

I wonder how women will cope with 'software eating the world'. At the moment, automation is mostly replacing hard work, and putting blue-collar men out of a job. But as more and more service jobs are replaced by robots, the only decent jobs left will be for managers and software engineers who are both creative and highly intelligent. I don't expect women to do well in such an environment.

Smart fridges, curtains, and sleep monitor....ahem...all baby/nurture related. It has always been plainly obvious to me that the sexes are quite different. We need to embrace and design around those differences, not try and homogenize life.

What you find is that women gravitate to work involving lots of face-to-face interactions, while men gravitate to work which is solitary (and/or physical, dirty, dangerous).

Women will never go into STEM in great numbers because the work is mostly solitary. There might be ways to make STEM more social, but fuck em.

So... women are actually over-represented in everything math and medicine related in germany. Any study like medical engeneering.. pure math etc.. all at least 60% women. Its more a tech thing than a science thing.

I think the game control may be a bit.... well, it sounds pretty useless, honestly. If the smart fridge or curtain reduced electrical costs by say, a better cooling cycle, or the curtains closing/opening to help moderate temperature, that would sure be more worthwhile, in my book.

I see this shit all the time at my university. Girls want to be "I am woman hear me roar" and one up their male counterparts with everything they do. Then they get offended when they aren't chosen for their "Brilliant" fuckin idea which has more holes than a block of swiss cheese. I have nothing against women in tech, but don't expect special treatment for your twat, and don't try to act like a special snowflake because you are a girl in a tech school with an 80 percent male enrollment.

Game controller that harnesses kinetic energy is pretty useless too actually. Sounds useful until you realize the amount of energy it generates is next to nothing. The smart tech seems far more useful, just less creative.

And there's not much hardwiring when it comes to this behaviour. Theres no forcing girls into tech here. Their focusing more energy on recruiting girls because girls don't think of it as an option, whereas much more boys do. Girls outpaced boys back in the day in terms of cutting edge CS research so you can't say they aren't hardwired for it. Nurture not nature

Are you in the field of science as a career? I doubt it. If you where then you would know that there are woman that preform better then man in the scientific fields. TRP is not about woman hatting. Its about not being a push over with women and standing up for yourself.

Did you ever consider that there are way less females in tech jobs? And that it's growing demographic regardless? Not all women are cut out to be scientists, but neither are men. This post is jumping to the conclusion that no women belong in science because one fair promoting women in the tech industry was wrongly won by a man.
