Abstractly, if their screen time and importance to the plot is equal, they should get equal pay, but that's not what drives their casting and salary negotiations.

An actor or actress is able to command a higher payout because they've been proven to put asses in seats in the theatre RECENTLY. If the actresses have THAT pull, then yes, they definitely should be holding out for higher payouts.

I'd compare this to salaries in football. Running backs are vital workhorses to the team, they also take a massive amount of physical damage compared to quarterbacks. Yet they make almost 80 percent less on average. Is that fair? Absolutely not. A running backs career is nearly half as long as a quarterbacks and they have a huge potential for head trauma. The oddest part of that article is that they act like these people negotiate their own salaries. Don't they actually have people negotiating for them? Who lets an uneducated 22 year old negotiate anything, let alone a multimillion dollar deal?

Also, what's interesting is who they compared her to. Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner were all much, much bigger stars than she was at the time these contracts were negotiated. Contracts aren't based on your acting skill or sex or anything, they are purely based off of how many people you bring into the movie theaters versus somebody else. Will Smith isn't the best compensated actor in the world because he's the most skilled, it's because he puts butts in the seats, end of story.

That being said, not only are Bale, Renner, and Cooper all more established than Lawrence, they're better actors as well.
