Finding a down earth girl can be tough. Period. Regardless of whether you are jacked or not.

As long as you don't act or talk like some jersey shore meat-head you should not have too much trouble attracting a down to earth girl.

I'm 5'7, not the tallest dude in the world, but I've always been athletic and fit (I'm 29, I look about 24). Over the past 6 months I've been running less and lifting more, my physique has changed considerably, and my body definition has taken on a more rugged, masculine look. I've found that it helps me assert myself as a male in social situations, kind of making up for my height deficit.

As a skinnier, leaner type of athlete, my height was always what killed me with women. I consider myself relatively handsome, I take good care of myself to be fashionable and respectable, but my height would be my biggest weakness. Since I started weightlifting, my shoulders have grown out and given me a more commanding presence. Compound lifts have allow my chest to grow as well, and have straitened my posture (thank you deadlifts), while chinups and pullups have given my back definition. My arms fill out my shirts and I've have to buy a new wardrobe about 3 months into lifting because my shirts became too small, that felt pretty good.

All in all, now when I walk into most situations, I can tell that I'm taken far more seriously as a person, and I feel that women are far quicker to give me submissive signals. My girlfriend loves my body, I'm no Arnie, but I'm confident and strong for my size.

My height hasn't bothered me for a long time, I got over that years ago, but now it's not even an issue anymore, I never think about it. I feel good and assert myself more, my confidence is that of a humbled, self-assured kind. I am happier now than I've been for years, and weightlifting, as a hobby, combined with smart and healthy eating, has become an indispensable part of my life.

So I'd say that no, you don't have to be ripped to pick up girls, I managed just fine before I started weightlifting and gaining muscle mass. However, would I suggest anyone to take it up as a personal pursuit to better their health and physicality? Hell yes, but if you take it up, learn to do it right. /r/fitness is a great place to start.

If anything, getting muscular just gives you confidence in yourself rather than making you much more physically attractive to women. To them it's really not a 1-10 scale of looks I don't think, more like 1-3, where 1 is hideously ugly, 2 is most guys, and 3 is brad pitt / NPH. It's confidence and other game factors that are 90% of it.

I've gone from a ~75kg rake to a 90kg fairly muscular guy and it's made barely any difference to anything.

I think being muscular is attractive to women, unless you become like a bodybuilder, in which case you'll polarize responses... A small percentage will be (very?) attracted, while most women won't be that into you.

But if you ACT like a tough guy and show off your body and walk like you think you're the shit, then down-to-earth girls are going to be turned off. Then I think you attract the wrong kind of girls.

There was a study that found that nearly all women are attracted to more muscular men. Highly attractive females were more attracted to muscles, whereas less attractive women had lower standards. Furthermore, women from high income / safe societies prefer lower bodyfat than women from poor or dangerous areas.

Even further, women are more atteacted to muscle on their periods than otherwise, and this preference is destroyed by birth control.

I'm going to admit that I am way more attracted to lean muscles than bulky muscles. I have no idea why, but a big, muscular arm is a bit of a turn-off.

I'm not saying I'm the type of girl that everybody would want... but I have never run into opposition from any guy with whom I've ever tried to flirt.

I'm also just letting you know that there are some girls out there who do prefer a lack of bulk.

Down-to-earth girls are also less likely to be looking for men at bars. They want quality men, and are more susceptible to day game than night game, in my opinion.

I mean I am going to go out on a limb and say you've probably been gaming at clubs and bars? Sounds like you might be falling victim to sample bias, or selection bias, whichever one.

I'm a huge dude and I attract all different kinds of women. Girls aren't as all about looks as we are. They help to be sure, but it's only a small part of the attraction factor with the exception of insanely hot dudes. That being said it can only help to be in great shape. Could be you're just looking in the wrong places for what you want though.

I think that physique can do a ton for attracting whoever you want to attract. Bodybuilding does become a bit of a fetish at a certain point, but many high quality women prefer a guy who is strong with low body fat % to someone who is either skinny or chubby. I recently went from 135-155lbs and have gotten a ton of positive attention from girls. Also, a lot of my friends/family have noted that I've been a lot happier and seemed more confident since I put on some lean muscle. IMO, getting a lean physique can do wonders for finding the right girls. Just make sure that you don't get the douchey gym-rat personality or become overly cocky. The muscles should just enhance a good personality - they show that you care about your body and respect yourself.

Check out Jeff Seid and Zyzz if you're looking for a physique that I would consider most women to find attractive. Stay away from the Jay Cutler/Ronnie Coleman excessive build, or anything with a body fat % over 12%ish.

Im pretty much your exact same size (5'11-3/4 & 200lbs) and am pretty jacked as well. I've got pretty decent size arms and my back is kinda wide. When i wear plane tshirts and go out, theres usually some point in the night where girls are drunk enough to say random shit. usually its not the 9/10's its usually the 6/7's that finally give in and gush over something about my physique. I also have a muscular ass which i think by far gets the most looks/compliments. I usually get girl next door types, so i havent really attracted particularly slutty chicks based on physique alone.

PROtip dudes: work the glutes. i was naturally ass inclined so i didnt have to put much work into it.

When I was more muscular I got WAY more resistance from women when I approached. It seems the common response was "This guy coming up all buff. He thinks he's hot stuff. Well I'll be a bitch and see how he likes that."

Yes. Attitude matters more than appearance at the end of the day. I've been around a lot of built guys and they all attracted different women, depending on their attitude and their own personal issues.

If you can deconstruct your own attitude, issues and needs, you'll be on your way to discovering the real issue here. I don't think it's the muscles.

I think if you're relying on your physique as a means to attract the opposite sex, you'll be attracting women who see you as an object and nothing more.

If you're relying on objectifying yourself to attract women, then you are going to respond more to women who objectify you. That goes for women trying to get men as well.

That's not to say, of course, that quality women aren't hitting on you, or wouldn't like to hit on you... you're either not seeing it, or you're looking in the wrong places, or you're attracted to the wrong kind of woman. (Again, that advice goes for women as well... I'm tired of that shit, "There's no quality guys around! They're all shallow" bullshit)

Just have to sift out the chaff and leave the wheat behind. There are going to be a lot of shallow women around good looking guys just as there are a lot of shallow men hitting up the good looking girls. Just have to filter a lot more.

Being fit will attract every kind of women. It is not something people decide over, men are attracted to slim and curvy women and women is attracted to ripped men (this is true for the western world only).

In addition to what everyone else is saying id add that since as a man we get to choose who interact with by approaching then youre physique and being muscular is something you should do for yourself and not to attract a certain type of girl. If you waanna choose a certain type of girl then start appraoching in bookshops as opposed to clubs or vice versa

The only problem exists if you are either too passive or if you think you are actually becoming less attractive to the "right kind" of woman. And the latter is dubious in some sense, since it seems to indicate that you would consider the "right kind" of woman to be one that discriminates against physical fitness and maintaining health, which would cause me to question your tastes.
