For years, students have asked why a similar space does not exist exclusively for men. Some give the Title IX argument — referring to a federal statute on equal gender treatment — saying that both genders should have access to the same types of facilities. On the other hand, the room is also not available to professors and postdocs — it’s intended to be a comfortable place for students to relax.

On the other hand, here is an argument not related in the slightest to the preceding one. WTF. They bring up the point of discrimination and Title IX and then attempt to refute it with a wholly unrelated fact about the room.

Continually ask where the male room is.

If they say anything like "most rooms are male" or some other PC crap, then ask them if you can pick just one room then and put a sign up saying "males only"

This gender segregation isn't even close to the worst. I went to a college that had women only areas, but they called them safety zones. They're not saying that women need something special because they're oppressed and need this special benefit to even things out, they're saying that I didn't belong there because I am a potential rapist.

attempt to make use of this room in a normal student manner. if denied or told you must leave, raise hell :) threaten a discrimination lawsuit, get the media's attention, write an op-ed piece in your student newspaper, hire an attorney to write the school. in short, don't let this BS stand man. you're smart enough to get into MIT, i think you should be fully capable of correcting this if you truly want to.

Have you considered talking to a woman's group on campus? You might find that they are willing to take this one, because they think that a single-gender lounge is stupid, sexist and a pink-ghetto artifact of yesteryear.

here in ireland there is a college for teachers which has on campus accomodation which is nice for the middle of the city.... thing is its only available for girls, and guys are extremely prohibited from being inside.

The existence of the Cheney room is the least concerning inequity facing male students at MIT. Good job getting into MIT as a male, BTW. It's not easy. Female applicants have a comparatively easy time getting in. I applied to MIT myself but wasn't accepted as an Asian male. Had I been female (or black), with my resume, I have no doubt that I would have been admitted. I got a perfect 36 on my ACT and was number 3 in my graduating class from a prestigious private secondary school with numerous AP and college credit courses under my belt.

I ended up going to UC Berkeley, instead. So no big loss, really. Thank god for California outlawing the consideration of race in post-secondary admissions. As a result Berkeley is about 55% Asian. Something that would never have been allowed to occur if the UC system were practicing affirmative action of any kind. Being male and Asian makes it nearly impossible to get into certain highly competitive schools.

MIT's undergraduate student body is 45% female, though MIT has only achieved this near parity by practicing a very extreme form of gender based affirmative action. A woman applying to MIT is 4-5 times more likely to be admitted than a male applicant with similar qualifications. The fact that inherent personal characteristics like race and gender can play such a decisive role is college admissions illustrates the fundamental unfairness of affirmative action policies.

Nothing new man, at my uni they had a 'woman's room' aswell, no men's room though. I actually went in there.. goddamn it was nice, I was with a female friend and still got stared at as if I had the black plague.
