I feel like I’m making a huge mistake posting here, as I fear I’ll get more judgment than support, but I feel like I don’t have anywhere else to go. We’ve been married 6 years, together 9. My wife has stated she wants a divorce. Its not out of the blue, as we have been struggling for years.

I take responsibility, as I have struggled being as supportive as she needed me to be on multiple fronts. But we have also have been in therapy (individual and marriage, and progress was being made on both fronts). But today I was told that she has been unhappy for a while and the only thing that will make her happy again is to not be married to me anymore, and any attempts to try to win her back are just gonna push her farther away.

We have two young sons in the middle of this, and she claims she wants this to be as amicable as possible, even suggesting collaborative divorce. Even with the possibility of this not being as messy as it could be, I feel completely distraught and like an absolute failure at life. Growing up, having a family(being a father, husband) was something I always wanted but had no positive examples of(grew up without a dad, no role models). I’m successful as I’m in the field I want to be in and I’m helping the community around me, but I’m not making alot of money. She was actually the breadwinner(which played a role in the resentment whether she will admit it or not). As I prepare to go through this, I just need to conserve the strength to be functional for my sons. Happiness is off the table for now, there’s no amount of exercise or hobbies that will make me fill better. Right now my only goal is to make sure my sons make all the right decisions so that they never have to feel the pain I am feeling.
