It really depends on where you live I think and probably even the specific high school you go to within your area. When I was in high school boys and girls both wore pajamas and no one cared.

I think pajamas are a secondary issue here to a vice principal that threatens suspension when accused of sexism. That's a horrific abuse of power that should probably be addressed up the chain. Unfortunately, in this context it might just get lumped in with something as trivial as who's wearing what, so I'm not sure about the best bet on this one.

I've heard a philosophy professor in college use almost your exact same example as evidence of sexism against women. It was a couple years ago, but I think it went something like this:

When guys are getting ready for class, they throw on a pair of jeans (or shorts in the summer) and a tshirt, and they're good to go. Women need to find trendy clothing, try various combinations, and make sure that they'll stand out when compared to other women. Part of his conclusion was that men have a solidarity in the way they can all take very little effort and dress virtually identically. Women, on the other hand, are required to take exorbitant amounts of time to create unique, trendy outfits, and the process of wearing unique clothing is actually the norm. If a woman decides she doesn't want to play along, she's immediately labeled a slob or unattractive or some other hurtful label.

Not really related to your predicament, but it reminded me of what this professor said so I thought I'd share.

And what are pajamas anyhow? Clothes for going to bed in...so if you aren't in bed then they aren't pajamas. The school needs to stop defining the clothes by their use and define it by the form...something like "No see through material" "No bare midriffs or exposed cleavage" something like that. Otherwise the definitions are too vague and easy to misinterpret.

Wen I was in high school I got in trouble for wearing a bandana because when women wear them it's a fashion thing but if a man does it's gang related. So the next day I wore a skirt to school over my jeans and matched a bandana to it. My principal was not amused.

Likely what is happening is that they are afraid of a back lash from feminists if they tighten down on the girls for wearing pajamas like we have seen with schools that tried to crack down on yoga pants. I think the rules should apply to all students regardless of sex but I understand why they are letting the girls get away with it.

On a more serious note this is definelty an issue as the more lenient attitude towards clothingnorms for females post-feminism seems to have become a trend. although its nothing to be concerned about since the benefits of wearing pajamas to school are exactly none, this counts for most traditionally female clothing aswell.

Personally, I came from a high school where anybody could wear pajamas regardless of gender, and I always wore normal clothes because I would've been embarrassed for myself to be seen in public looking like I just crawled out of bed... but I agree with you that it's absolute bullshit that girls in your school can and you can't. Saying that it's just a "style" for girls is a pathetic excuse for discrimination. It's not like we're even talking about guys wearing skirts here, for crying out loud, PJs are supposed to be unisex.

It doesnt really matter whether it's "fair" in your eyes or not. It has more to do with how revealing it is. If you can see your junk bulging through your pajamas, you can't wear it. Likewise if you can see a girl's cameltoe at school, she shouldn't be wearing those clothes. You don't have to have a completely unisex dress code to be non-gender biased.

The VP responded with obvious sexism. The VP should be called out for unequal enforcement of a dress code or for unduly threatening this young person with punishment. I'd say this a decent battle for a high schooler. No need to get the MRM to add it to the list of societal grievances, but we can certainly advise the boy or young man.

Pajamas to school? Why are we allowing our schools to become a fashion statement? Uniforms would solve the problem. Parents could save much money by not worrying what the latest fashion craze would be and hopefully, would help establish a better learning environment for their kids.

We have a strict dress code at my school, only the guys have to follow it. The girls can do whatever they want as long as it is not too revealing. But they even let that slide sometimes!

it is a sexist double standard, not one boys should care about because wearing pajamas at school is just , no. however the attitude the school takes is one to note, how they dont care if girls wear pajamas but are willing to ruin a boys education if he does. that is a sexist double standard and more troubling a attitude by school officials. it shows how aweful the adults in these situations have become, they are probably afraid to death to tell girls they cant wear pajamas. if they just willingly let students wear pajamas to school...well there is another example how stupid our adults in education have become too.

Suspension for that? Ive had and heard about some ridiculous suspensions but that one is new. Dont be afraid of suspension when you did nothing wrong. Suspensions can be appealed and removed from your record if granted. Usually thats after its been served already but that makes them more likely to remove it because they dont care. Also, it could be a scare tactic.

However if you want to dress up like a sloppy trashy chick you shouldn't be punished for it but you certainly should have higher aspirations for yourself and carry yourself with a bit more dignity than that.

Sidebar, I subscribed to this subreddit because I disagreed with how many feminists always paint themselves as the victim. Thanks for changing that and reminding me that sometimes people still piss and moan about benign things that don't matter and label it as "sexism".
