I'm pretty sure women buy themselves jewelry all the time. It's just that the point of the diamond ring is the symbolism behind it, so just going "hey, I just spent a lot of money on this garbage ring for myself" will get you weird looks. You can buy yourself Christmas presents, but that's not the point.

see. She's just a bad comedian is the problem. Good comedy requires consistent logic and is often aimed at pointing out inconsistent logic. This is one of the reasons there are so few female comedians who even approach good, because they reject consistent logic.

A diamond ring serves no purpose other than vanity and a display of wealth. A flat screen tv serves quite a few purposes and has use that goes beyond the owner. If she really thinks there is nothing that a man can buy and feel ashamed of it, or be ridiculed by others, then she does not live on the planet earth, because that is a complete and total lie.

What she really wants to say is "I'm lonely and I can't admit why."

Misses the whole fucking point, joke or not. A) Women can buy whatever hell they want; nothing's stopping them. It's the act of proposing itself that's the issue. B) Women themselves reinforce this idea (the man doing the proposing/buying the ring) for various reasons (some including cultural/social, but others including personal preference, the fact that it benefits them, and probably biological impulses too). C) A woman proposing to a man has a chance of emasculating the man in question due to gender roles/norms. It all depends on the the two in the relationship.

Etc. Framing it as a 'lets attack men for YET another thing that we, ourselves, have contributed to' type of issue only lets us know that you aren't for equality. You're just for blaming shit on men and having your cake and eating it too.

Actually she is partially right. Women can't buy certain types of jewellery for themselves, because it would be seen a cheating.....BY OTHER WOMEN. See the huge diamond ring, right? It is there to show off your female power. It is there to show that you could get a man to become THAT invested in you.

The male equivalent would be to somehow fake male power. Showing off a rented sports car, dressing above your station (garbage man wearing Armani suits would be made fun of) and countless other more subtle examples. Men constantly police each other to make sure no one is "cheating" wrt power displays. As do women.

Only problem I have with this cunt is that she seems to be implying that - surprise - men are to blame, again again.

I don't know what the heck she's talking about. Society doesn't say that it's a lonely or creepy thing for a woman to buy herself a diamond ring. Sheesh. Nobody bats a friggen eye if a woman buys herself jewelry. Know who's not "allowed" to have engagement rings? MEN. Even if a guy wanted one or liked the idea, it's not like he could ever say so because everyone would laugh at him. Besides, the whole "diamond engagement ring" tradition was not started by men - it's purely commercial.

And the insinuation that it's men who are somehow responsible for the whole engagement ring thing is laughable. Men are the ones who have to shell out thousands, and sometimes tens of thousands, of dollars on the ring. Women are the ones who generally drive the expectation for the ring to be included with the proposal.

One last thing - the excitement about getting engaged? Yeah, it's not so much about the diamond as it is about the fact that someone loves you so much that they want to be your spouse. That feels freaking amazing. Diamonds are beautiful but unless you're some kind of materialistic psycho, what matters way more is the love of the man (or woman) who put that ring on your finger and asked for your heart. I love my engagement ring but not because it's huge (it isn't) or a diamond - it's because it represents how much I am loved. When I showed it to people right after he proposed, it was never about showing off an expensive bauble. It was about being thrilled that my best friend loved me as much as I loved him.

No she doesn't from start to finish, she frames it as female stupidity.

The first frame is the setup. That's how she thinks.

The second is the contrast: guys would never think like that.

Everything else is to lead up to the punch line that highlights how ridiculous women look when they get all hyper excited over their wedding ring.

Nothing about this is really sexist against men, except the first frame where she displays both hypoagency and the fact that she is aware of that hypoagent tendency and so decides to make fun of it.

tl;dr: The joke was funny. But not great, too much lead up for something that would be funny to see and only vaguely funny to imagine.
