When my Sicilian nan died, we found out that she’d designated that everything be split equally among her adult daughters. And should any of the daughters die, the other sisters will inherit the portion. And when they all die, and if there is remaining money, it skips their husbands and goes to granddaughters. My nan didn’t take any shit, and my pap was a HVM. But she always had a fuck you fund, and she never wanted the women in her family to be without anywhere to turn due to financial dependence on their husbands. And her legacy depicted that. Proud of you for leaving with style.
[–][deleted] 23 points24 points25 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That’s brilliant. My legacy shall be a “Fuck You Trust Fund” with emergency money to leave shitty husbands 😂

Thank you for sharing this story❤️
I felt really down today since so many people are calling me high maintenance, hard to please, demanding, career driven and such while it has nothing to do with that. It has to do with self love and self respect.
[–]give_mefriesFDS Newbie 12 points13 points14 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Men are never called high maintenance for having standards in their relationships or for being career driven. You did nothing wrong. Your level of confidence is what I aspire to have.

A prime example of the long con. Some guys will play HV right until they think you're trapped. The shared pet, house commitment and talk of marriage were supposed to blind you to the switch up.
Good for you for not being afraid to walk away! I wish you a thousandfold greater happiness than he brought.

Just out of curiosity, was there an age gap between you?
5 years.
Which is like a non age-gap to me. I moved out really young, so all my friends are that age/stage as well.
You did well getting out as soon as he started taking off his fake cloth and revealed the red flags underneath!
I'm really excited to move on. He should be working at an airport, waving around all day.

I understand what you're saying, but it's a far stretch from the 10-15 year age gaps I was used to.
I don't feel comfortable with men my own age: I left home usually 10 years before they did. And the ones that did leave, aren't the types i would ever date. I'm open to same age relationships, but they seem to consistently work out worse than age gap relationships.
[–]hopewings18 points 5 years ago [recovered] (8 children) | Copy Link
I left home early, too, and I was also in a few of those problematic age gap relationships when I was way too young and naive. The most healthy and equitable relationships I have been in were ones where we were the same age. You can't evaluate what you don't know, so it's much harder to vet an older man.
The dynamic you described with this ex, where he tried to control you, I recognized it immediately from my age gap relationships. He thinks he can control you because you are younger and make less money, and there's an inherent imbalance in status and power. He wanted to keep that imbalance, part of why he was trying to knock you up immediately.
I have lots of stories about age gap relationships that didn't seem problematic at first, but the problems revealed themselves down the road. As an example, when I was in my late 20s, a coworker who was in her early 30s married a man who was in his early 40s. She told me that he had saved a certain amount of money, and I remember thinking "oh that seems good," because by our then standards he was doing well.
They got divorced a few years after having a kid. Now I'm getting closer to the man's age, and I realize just how pathetic the amount he had saved was for a working white collar professional. I have way more than that myself, and I have two kids. So it's also easier to evaluate the net worth of a man around your same age. And that's just one dimension. Science now finds that the brain keeps maturing into people's 30s and 40s. Easier to spot a man child when you know what to look for!

She thinks she's "mature for her age" and that's why she likes older men.
Where did I say that exactly?
Because the thing is, I dated guys my own age and it turned out even worse. I think it comes more to life stages, they have to align for me in order for a relationship to work. And it's perfectly fine to think otherwise, but I think your assumption is quite rude.

[–]jayda92At-Risk Pick Me Youth[S] 14 points15 points16 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I wouldn't, but I think he gets sick of it soon enough when he finds that magical uterus.
But then he still needs to pay. Which is good, I couldn't afford her on my own... I lost a child before, she feels like a kid to me.
[–]melonmagellanFDS Newbie 10 points11 points12 points 5 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
I mean, if you can't afford a dog then you can't afford it. What if she has a medical emergency and there is a $4,000 vet bill. Will he pay it? Are you going to go to court over it?
My cat died of a horrible auto immune disease and his medical treatment for this was like $6-7k alone. My border collie was similar when she developed a heart issue.
That's on top of general care for as much as 15-years, depending.
My animals are my family, but, they aren't children and need to go to the person that is the most bonded with them and can also afford to take care of them.
Sharing a pet like a kid will foster a lot of weird dynamics. I actually thinks it is anti-FDS. "I need his money to afford a pet and I'll continue to see him about the pet "
[–]jayda92At-Risk Pick Me Youth[S] -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
What if she has a medical emergency and there is a $4,000 vet bill. Will he pay it?
Yes, we have a contract.
if you can't afford a dog than you can't afford it
I can but not on my own.
need to go to the person that is the most bonded with them
I don't think he would've made her happy... I can. With help; which is arranged.
Losing an animal is one of the worst things, and their happiness should come first always.

I’m sorry about your breakup, but you did the right thing. I have to say though, you’re nicer than me- when I dumped my ex I didn’t even let him say goodbye to the dog lol. (He didn’t deserve to)
[–]melonmagellanFDS Newbie 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Taking the dog and/or cat is the thing to do. I made sure I paid all the vet bills and was the adopting party for this reason. I have the legal high ground. Not like any NVM cares enough to go to court unless forced.
Like men give a shit about pets. They don't even care about women or children.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Exactly! Glad you made all of those decisions. He just wants to get to you through the dog- and like you said, when he finds another woman, he’ll stop with the dog coparenting. My ex just wanted inside my house one last time when I was trying to break up with him once and for all (I had already broken up with him over the phone bc in the past he would never let me dump him when I did it in person, but he insisted on coming over even when I wouldn’t come outside, he just wouldn’t leave. I should have just called the cops), so he tried to bring the dog into it.
[–]melonmagellanFDS Newbie 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
In my experience with NVMs, the pet tactic is always manipulation.
Sorry loser, they are my "property" and legally I own them.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
They always know some kind of manipulation tactic. If not many
[–]jayda92At-Risk Pick Me Youth[S] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
How did you handle that situation if i may ask?
Yeah honestly I was so young that instead of calling the cops and standing my ground about staying inside the house, I did go out to talk to him just to appease him because I knew he wouldn’t leave. But my dad stood outside the door the whole time lol. I just heard him out bc I was just so ready for it to be over- part of me tried to stop myself from laughing because I was so uncomfortable and it was so ridiculous. But at the same time I was a little scared and very annoyed. Eventually he left and as soon as he left I blocked him on everything. It didn’t stop him from mildly stalking me at times after that but it’s been a few years and haven’t talk to him in those years. I’m sorry I’m not sure if you were talking about that situation or the dog situation- really the dog situation did not matter because at the end of the day he didn’t really care about the dog, I bought the dog and the dog was always going to stay with me. He did not even want to pay the vet bill one time when we thought the dog was going to pass even though he had the money to and I did not really... so I did my best to make it work. So no dude, you can’t say goodbye to the dog.

And honestly - you claim you got engaged to a man after 8 months dating: how the hell can you tell whether someone is worth marrying after such a short time? Yet here you are on FDS demanding validation & praise for splitting up with your trash LVM that you got enaged to after a short time & cohabited with without commitment despite wanting kids. This is total nonsense - it's laughable.

Having to live together is always so wild to me because imagining preFDS you’re w a guy for sometime so it’s the “right move” to live together without any other commitment means you’re risking never having any permanent home. You’ll at the least live at one place for a year (since leases are likely to be a year long and I’m assuming the ppl trying out “living together” quickly finds out they are incompatible). Then you’ll have to find another place again. Then you meet another guy and then repeat above for...rest of your life?????? It has absolutely no security and the whole idea of “trying to see if you’re compatible” is bullshit. Two HV people will pick up after themselves. I remember i used to feel so insecure because I was always told I’m too “anal” when it comes to cleanliness and so it made me scared about having a partner because I’d apparently annoy them with my standards. Ugh
