People of both sexes from the 1st world outside of North America tend to be better socialized in general, in my experience. I assume it's mostly because they spend less time working and in school, have wider communities, etc.

Aussies are stereotypically gregarious and easy-going compared to the rest of the Anglosphere anyway.

That being said, people are usually more open with foreigners when they are with their own kind. You have a better chance of hooking up with somebody who finds you "novel" even if your citizenship isn't more desirable than theirs, particularly if you're meeting people at popular tourist destinations.

Moreover, it's entirely possible that the only reason your two interactions went differently is because the American woman asked you to buy her a drink, and too quickly for your liking. In other words, it could have been a simple matter of protocol differences, not any sort of indictment of American women or of men. A post by one of those Americans might even read "are American men just different: we were talking and I asked for a drink and he got all weird and quiet. Foreign guys we met on that trip weren't like that! Do American men just not trust women?" Et cetera.

not American but i lived, worked and partied for 6 years in downtown Sydney, Australia, and buying rounds is just standard behaviour, mate; it's not really about being 'nice'. glad you had a good time with these girls but believe you me Oz equally has its fair share of princesses. pretty girls who reapply their lip gloss at the table and check themselves out in the mirror every few minutes, and there's no way in hell they are buying lads the first round. just saying can't really judge any country, America or Australia, by one or a handful of people.

America is a very individualistic culture. As a result, people tend to be kinda selfish and have poor social skills compared to other countries. There's a certain "paranoia" and "entitlement" in interactions here, it's like people still believe in "stranger danger" and only will entertain you if you "provide them value". Not all Americans are like this, of course, but we're a weird nation of salesman.

If anything it would be a cultural difference that isn’t necessarily limited to gender. Im sure if I went to latin america and met a group of men they would be different from american men because they are from a completely different country

I’m Latin and visit Latin American countries often and I can say without a doubt American woman are absolutely different. I wouldn’t say worse , just different priorities. In Latin America women are socialized to place priority on how they present themselves which is why they seem more attractive , because they do put more effort into looks compared to American women. Also we are taught since birth to be polite and pleasant. Hence why a lot of people fetishize latinas. So due to those things American woman seem “sloppier” at times compared to woman from Latin America. Just my two cents

I’d say in general I’ve noticed that American people are just generally worse at socializing, especially compared to Aussies. I don’t think it’s a gendered thing and I also think your comparison based on one experience isn’t substantial evidence. The people I met in Australia were very social and easygoing, but then again the people you meet when traveling are more likely to be.

I think that people are often just naturally friendlier to foreigners. I could completely see a group of American women being friendlier to a group of Australian guys.

If you hung out with Aussie men, you would have found them different too. It's not news that people from different cultures act differently.

I can relate to what u/Popular_Accountant60 write, especially "Also we are taught since birth to be polite and pleasant". I'm from the Balkans, women aren't seen as hot as Latinas but the sense that they must be polite is a universal thing. Women sometimes use bad language but when they do it's as if everyone is shocked that they know such words.

From a male gaze it is fun, fun to have these mythical creatures that act as if they do not shit, piss or fart, but it's part of not being free. I think Victorian Britain had plenty of women that blushed for no reason.

You saw the difference in women but I'm sure the locals do roll their eyes at American wankers that act as if they own the place. Same people, different genitals.

Having lived in Canada and Sweden I can say there is a difference even between those countries, and having spoke to people that moved from the states, there's an even bigger difference between Canada and the States.

So I would argue yes there is absolutely a phenomenon happening in America but not really anywhere else, and it's insane to be people are this self centered to not remember the rest of the fucking world exists where people are varying degrees of normal, and that economy and religion are massive influences on social change.

Nobody seems to remember these things though and instead get caught in echo chamber thought loops about nothing and argue online. It's insane

American woman here. I don't have experience with women from other countries (outside of a few friends), but there's a huge culture war happening over here. All "majority" (dominant) characteristics like maleness, whiteness, Christianity, heterosexuality, cisnormative etc etc have been... kind of demonized? Or rather, people take a lot of joy in tearing privileged people apart. "White men are scumbags!" From white women and that kind of thing. Of course white women are the butt of a lot of jokes too. A lot of other Western countries aren't as entrenched in our culture war, many British people dislike how much we discuss race in our politics for example.

In general though the culture war has caused men and women to dislike each other even more than they did before. Liberal feminism became more mainstream and gave women and girls a new lexicon of things men do wrong and were made aware of the issue of rape on college campuses where it all kind of snowballed. Then the metoo movement happened, and while I'm happy we were able to hold powerful men accountable, it's pretty much a downer topic. I'm a pretty left leaning person myself and hearing people on twoX constantly bring up rape all the time is torture for me. Twitter and reddit politics have made me kind of want to drop out of the culture war and I kind of prefer to avoid it now. I'm much less invested in politics these days because it feels like my concerns are being ignored in general.

I think the American women you encountered on your trip were a bit rude to ask for you to pay for their drinks. I don't know if that's an American thing? Typically you wait for the man to offer otherwise you pay yourself. You can have a conversation with someone at a bar and only buy your own drinks. Perhaps she was too used to having that be offered by guys, I don't know.

Yes women in the US have a.....not necessarily hate.....dislike/distrust for men they don't know. It's like you're guilty of being one of the "bad guys" until you prove you're not. But no matter what your real life experiences are the women in here are going to say you're wrong and it's just the few American women you're around.
