This is what I tell guys. Think about how you would feel if a bigger stronger man capable of overpowering you did or said it to you because he was interested. You don't want that man following you to the restroom to "have the chance to talk to you alone." You don't want him following you to your car because he missed the chance to say something in the bar/store. That exercise fits almost every possible scenario. It's creepy behavior if it freaks you out.

Don't be directly sexual, be respectful, and almost no one is going to think that you're being creepy for approaching them.

This is a good question! The Jabba the Hutt criteria makes it quite tricky though. I'm not sure there is a way I would enjoy being hit on by someone I found very unattractive? Would be interesting to know if men would also feel the same way about someone they found as appealing as Jabba hitting on them.

For any guy, regardless of attractiveness, I think the best way to hit on someone is to open with a friendly-only conversation starter, and see how the reaction is. If it's positive you could move into some compliments or banter. And then if the reaction to that is positive, you could try getting closer to them / small touches. I think responding to how someone is reacting and giving them plenty of opportunities to dial it back or make an exit is key to successfully flirting / not making anyone feel uncomfortable even if they're not into it.

It's been a good experience when the guy has been polite. I've had guys come up to me in bars or coffee shops and ask for my number or to dance, it's never been an unpleasant experience when they've just been decent about it. ''Sorry to bother you'' is always nice to hear. Also, if they turn you down, still be polite and walk away. I've had dudes approach me that I didn't think were creeps until I turned them down and they started trying to debate me into giving them a chance.

Two weeks ago, a dude asked me for a light. I didn't have one, but we had a short conversation about smoking and how it's bad, his dog was around and I said it's a cute puppy, he told me I was cute and after the whole ''oh, thank you, that's sweet, but I'm married'' thing, we just parted ways and went on about our days. It was a perfectly nice interaction and the guy was sweet.

Other suggestions would be - think about whether you'd feel uncomfortable in the situation if someone like Hafthor Bjornsson approached you the way/at the location you want to approach the person in. Would you be okay with a big man like that following you to your car? Would you be okay with him basically cornering you and expecting your reply? Would you like it if he tried to yank your headphone out of your ear to talk to you? You get the idea.

There's no guarantee you'll get a number out of the interaction but being polite and cognizant of how/where you're approaching the person will limit the chances of you being the creep in the story she tells her friends later that week.

Times I have reacted positively I was getting a coffee I had a book in my hand the server commented on how he loves the book, I had just started reading it but we talked about the author, we ended up dating for 8 months.

I was at a very boring work exerbishion once where I couldn’t leave the stand and it was so hot. Someone brought me water saying he noticed we didn’t have any. He actually ended up with my co worker, I introduced them later on.

Anything that's about making a connection. Whether it's about relevant interests or just about something we share together. It will make me think about talking with them in the future. I think that's really important more so than complimenting some superficial part of me.

Compliments about my outfit, hairstyle are nice I like those it's better than remarks about my body like my butt and breasts. That's an instant turn off.

Subtlety honestly flirting exchanges which are very subtle but nice are addictive. There's warmness there and inviting more to be read into. I really like the subtle hitting on thing. Because it's are they hitting on me and then the banter can continue

I've never enjoyed or responded well to being hit on by a stranger, at best I can categorize some of those experiences as not-scary. I should say that I don't drink much, or go to bars at all, so I'm not saying anything about the norms there.

Every guy I've dated has been part of some kind of group with me (friends, hobby, neighborhood), and we've had at least one lengthy non-sexual discussion, usually several, before they asked me out.

I've never been bothered by a guy asking me out in that context, even if I wasn't interested in him, so long as he took no for an answer.

I think I speak for most guys when I say this but I think the biggest fear isn’t rejection it’s accidentally being creepy or weird.

If this is your fear, I suggest getting to know people for a couple of meetings without getting too romantic or sexual. In my opinion, even as a man, you have to know someone for those things to even begin to blossom into genuine desire. So get to know people, just a bit. Decide if you even want to go out with them, whatever that looks like to you. For me, a good couple of group conversations is bare minimum.

And if you're not at liberty to hang out as friends or in a group for longer than a couple of meets, "would you like to go out with me on Friday?" is not creepy at all.

Honestly, I've only really ever enjoyed being hit on be dudes I already knew. And they did it in a respectful way usually. And usually it cut to the chase like asking to get coffee, pizza, or if I'd be at a party later or saying we should hang out sometime.

I've never enjoyed strange dudes approaching me. I've never enjoyed being interrupted in my activities. And I really hated those long drawn out hit ons where I can't really leave without being a bitch, and he's wasting my time trying to get to asking me out or whatever.

I don't need lines or bizarre attempts to open me up or make me laugh if we're already in the same community and basically know each other.

If you're trying not to be creepy, don't touch me, don't approach in creepy circumstances, try not to come off as super nervous, do not be overtly sexual, basically, imagine a huge gay dude was hitting on you, what makes you feel safe and unsafe? Being alone. Being cornered. Him getting in your personal space or ignoring your boundaries

I've never really fully enjoyed a cold approach in a sense that I wanted it to happen again or anything but there are a few instances I have mentioned previously either here or a related subreddit.

Striking up a conversation about a band in between sets and then inviting me to the tour's concert in a neighboring town the next week at the end of the show as they tore down the stage
Standing in line and then sitting together at a sci-fi/goth/theatrical convention for a panel of a television show we liked (the line was 1+ hours long). Struck up a conversation in line and then after the panel before they asked me.

Hmmm. I honestly can't remember the last time I got hit on in a way I enjoyed. I prefer approaching men myself as it feels more comfortable. On first dates I don't like men "hitting on" me as in giving out compliments or making suggestions etc. I much prefer them having an open body language, looking at me in a way that expresses interest in me and that they like how I look, having a nice chat, etc.

I liked how my partner approached me at the bar. He just came up and introduced himself, talked about the bands playing that evening, offered to buy me a drink. I was originally about to leave, and he didn’t try to follow me or get a number right away. He was friendly but not real smooth, seemed a little nervous (later said he was), and honestly that’s a big part of why I decided to stay and talk to him. It wasn’t that I didn’t find him attractive, but I wasn’t trying to meet anyone that night, so just not giving me a reason to wanna get away (pushy guy trying to corner me) was a huge factor. Another commenter mentioned not doing anything that would make you uncomfortable if a bigger man did it to you… and that’s good advice. Don’t loom over her against the wall, physically block her way, or try to trap her in conversation. Humor and keeping it friendly and casual goes a long way.
