This shit happened to me. A guy kept texting me claiming I was a girl named Cynthia. I kept telling him he was given a fake number.

He called and texted me NONSTOP. He was convinced I was faking. He said he called his cousins and his friend and they all said I had Cynthia's number. He called me even when I kept texting him to stop because I was literally at a funeral; guy apologies....And then calls me again like five times during the funeral.

Brother was thirsty AF.

When I was still looking, I decided to give the girl my number. I’d wrap up the conversation, “I gotta get back to my friends, let me give you my number and you can text me later.”

Then if she offered me her phone, just type it in, if not just scrawl it on a napkin. Girl doesn’t feel on the spot to make a decision of do I like this guy enough to go ahead and give him my number. Then it’s in her court, she can text or not, but I’m not thinking about it anymore, I’m doing something else.

Huh couple years ago I said this exact tip in a text post and got down voted heavily. Comments said this tip is pointless because you should simply have good interactions with girls and then you wouldn't have fake numbers. Kind of true but I think some things are out of your control and that's ok.

People here realize that if a woman is giving you a fake number it's because you are making her feel unsafe and scared of what you might do to her if she rejects you. If you get a fake number its a sign that you should probably look hard at how you acted during that night.

That said some women just give out fake numbers regardless if they aren't looking for anything or if they have been bothered by somebody else earlier in the night and they just want to be left alone.

I think this is only sound advice if you are actually a nice guy who wouldn’t make a scene. To offer it as widespread advice isn’t really a good thing.

Why is she giving out a fake number in the first place? The answer is most likely fear. She is afraid of how he’ll react to being rejected. Maybe he will be cruel, defensive, aggressive, or even violent. Maybe he won’t take no for an answer and will follow her. She is probably getting a vibe from this person that makes her feel unsafe or uncomfortable.

Maybe she’s wrong and he’s a nice guy that would leave her alone, and using this trick would make him get the hint and move on. But maybe she’s right, and he uses this trick and now she’s in the situation she was trying to avoid.

In my experience the douchey ones are incredibly unaware of how they act. These guys will see this advice and use it when they really shouldn’t. So I’d say, just to be safe, whether you think you’re a douche or not, don’t use this advice. Just text the wrong number and find out she’s not interested when you’re away from her. If you were going to brush it off anyway, what’s the big deal in texting a stranger the wrong number? If it saves you your pride just tell them you typed the number in wrong.

what you should not do is ask someone if you can borrow their phone to call your designated driver and then call your own phone so you have their number, and then harrass them the next day. why i never let people call their mum/dad/etc on my phone now

Or, you could be a decent human being, and just take what a woman tells you at face value. If she gave you a wrong number, it was for a reason. It might simply be that she was uninterested and didn't want to cause a scene. It's also possible you did something wrong like approaching her at work. Either way, trying to "trick" her is immediately getting off on the wrong foot.

I understand that many men think this is trivial and not a big deal. However, for a woman, saying no is not always an option, and the fake number is one of the few tools at their dispersal to get out of uncomfortable or unsafe situations. It's COMPLETELY unnecessary to follow OP's advice, because women are more likely to give fake numbers intentionally than accidentally. So there is nothing to gain by confronting a woman on the spot. Instead, all you're doing is risking making her feel pressured (thus, confirming why women feel the need to give fake numbers in the first place).

I think it’s irrelevant whether she gives you a fake number or not, because its not even guaranteed that she’d text you back the next day regardless. Validating is worse because you are actively trying to ruin it for yourself. I don’t even think they read into it that much, so just do your thing confidently and enjoy your night.

If you must have a tip: personally after getting a girl’s number, I take it and that’s it. If I want her to have mine right away then I’ll have her take out her phone and I’ll enter it in manually.

Please don’t always cut it short after getting the number like the majority of guys (I know a lot of times it’s the right play). You could be fine leaving as is but you could also be squandering the opportunity to stay for another drink and bring your rapport/connection to a higher level making you more memorable, or even to escalate after that. YMMV

Flipside Protip: Get a free Google voice number and hand that one out to people you meet instead of your real digits.

It's easier to control, it isn't tied to one phone/device and (if you ever get a stage 5 clinger or a psychopath) you can simply swap that number with a new one in seconds.

This happen to me as well but next time I saw the woman I said I'm sorry for not calling you, I lost your number. I then handed her a bank deposit receipt with my phone number on it, The receipt showed I had $78523.45 and she called me later that day wanting to meet me.

Tip: at the ATM dig in the trash bin for a atm receipt with a large amount on it and keep it in your pocket to write your number on. I guarantee she will look at how much you have and call you. Woman tend to put out if they think your going to share your wealth.

I just check snapchat after the fact. 98% of hot girls at bars have one, and if they give you a legit # it'll show up when you go to add someone from contacts (usually with a username similar to their real name). Pretty roundabout way but eh at least it gives me an idea of how many legit numbers I got at the end of the night.
