I literally just turned 17 and these past few months I’ve been made uncomfortable more and more frequently by male strangers. My mom says I appear closer to 14 because I have a baby face (puffy apple cheeks below my eyes and larger lips.) yet I still get harassed. To clarify; I don’t believe all men are r*pists or anything like that, but if I see a man I don’t know, I feel a primitive fear that I don’t experience when I see a woman I don’t know. I haven’t really had any bad experiences with female strangers; the worst would be a customer being rude about her order. In contrast, I’ve had quite a few negative experiences with male strangers; catcalling, following, touching my clothing (not full on groping but light tugging as I’m walking by), much older men flirting with me. My female friend who is the same age recently was SA’d by her Uber driver and it’s sparked some fear in me. A lot of women I know have been SA’d. My birthday has brought on some fear as well knowing that in one year I’ll be “fair game” and older guys won’t feel as deterred, not that they were anyways. I get hit on quite often by men aged 40-70. Honestly, I am scared of men who I don’t know. I’m sure they’re mostly good people but I always keep pepper spray in the palm of my hand and I’ve developed borderline agoraphobia because it’s become so frequent that I’m hit on or made to feel unsafe by guys I don’t know. I skip lunch often because i don’t feel comfortable walking to the super market.

I’ve vented about this online a couple times and I’ve been called bigoted in DMS and told to suck up my issues because men’s pain is “much worse” and I’ll “never understand”. And just a lot of overall aggression and accusations. Am I a misandrist for being scared of male strangers? I’m worried that I am but I feel like my fear is valid..
