Women, seriously, what the hell is so important about wedding photos?

You should ask women who do care about it - maybe wedding subreddits would give you more insight here. If I had to guess, I think the idea is that pictures stay with you. There's also pressure that "wedding is your best day", so maybe some women feel they want it to be ideal.

I can't relate to it because my husband and I just didn't have a wedding to start with.

It's a permanent artifact of one of the happiest days in a couple's life. People still do things with photos, you know, like put them up and have them out as part of the decor. My house has pictures of my family and pets. My best friend has photos of her wedding in the hallway.

Lots of husbands also want photos, so this is not unique to brides or just women. But I am sure you knew this when you asked this question.

Well for one, it’s probably the one picture of you your grandkids will show their great grandkids.

They’re the only photos I have of some of my ancestors. I know a lot of men care about their “legacy”. Well, that photograph of your mutual families being joined in marriage is a moderately-recent-traditional part of your legacy. Farther back, families would document marriage dates and birth dates in their family bible— same thing.

For me, it wasn’t a big drama thing like that, but I wanted photos. Marrying my husband is one of the most important decisions of my life, and getting wedding photos of the whole family together was meaningful and touching. It is part of the tradition of uniting two families and becoming a new family, and I really valued having this tangible proof that we are so loved and supported in taking such an important step together for the rest of our lives.

I get that some guys might mock caring about a stupid thing like a photograph, but I kinda think that’s cynical and divisive. Let people celebrate marriage. It’s supposed to be a happy important day.

I just like anything to do with photos and photography. I have a few photographer friends who I modeled for. So of all the things to spend money on, photos were a given. In comparison, my dress (which I didn't give many fucks about) was $200.

I couldn’t tell you, maybe you have to go to a specific subreddit about weddings? I went to the courthouse in a t-shirt and shorts and the photos are all selfies we took together.

I was a wedding photographer for over a decade. The photos itself are obviously a very high skill profession and it takes a lot of experience to get the polished looks and develop a certain style to take these kind of photos. You have to pay a lot of attention to every detail.

Interestingly what I found mostly with wedding photography is that while the photos in itself are very important as a memory of the day its also the connection to that memory. I had couples that explained they never had photos together. They never got dressed fancy together. They never really went out together. A wedding is one of the few times where a man is almost forced to make an effort and has to play nice so the wife could have at least a couple of romantic photos together. A couple could've been together for ages and never had a nice family photo together. But as soon as you have to pay a certain price for these the guy has to pull himself together too. Its also one of the few occasions where all of the families come together. Maybe its the last time where grandparents are together with their grandkids. All while dressed nicely. Its a very bonding experience. I used to do some group activities together and take photos together. Like everyone had to raise their hands in unison and stuff like that. This actually has a psychological effect of connecting everyone together. You can see these kinds of bonding experiences during sports and other team events. Look at any sport and their fanbase. If their team scores points everyone will be happy and cheer together. If they lose you can feel a certain intimacy with the team and the other fans. For a moment you are all connected in a shared experience. This is what weddings are. Men tend to be more involved in teams sports because of this experience. Traditionally women would try to get their "team" together and bonded in certain rituals. They organise family gathering, regular meals together etc. Since nowadays everyone is more separated and split up there arent as many team building events anymore. So big lifetime events become increasingly important since we lost a lot of the "mundane" family celebrations. There aren't a lot of families gathering every couple of month anymore just to celebrate being a family. Nowadays we need more of a reason. The pictures that come with it is used as a reminder of the team and unit you have formed. Photos and photo albums tend to be pulled out as a memory of that and reminiscing will happen "remember how uncle chuck danced with aunt lindy at the wedding?"

Personally I had a courthouse wedding with only one other couple that are friends of me and my husband as witnesses. The friends took some photos with their phones. And I actually also printed some of them out. I didn't really care about all of that but in the end I was still happy I have these pictures as a reminder of the day my husband became my husband. Then again. My husband knows how important pictures are for me so I actually have a lot of photos of us together.

The stories about bridezillas removing someone from the photos because they don’t have the right aesthetic are mostly fake rage bait. For the few that are true, the reason they go viral is because of how rarely that happens.

Most people care about the wedding photos because it is a special (and usually pretty expensive) day and of course most people would want photos to commemorate that.

Also, the only photos I have of my great grandparents are their wedding photos. There is a historical element there as well.

You could as easily ask what is so big about weddings. They're a bigger deal in some cultures than others, and there is a modern trend where many women treat it as an coronation, but yeesh.

We bought a bunch of disposable cameras and encouraged guests to take pictures, and a former housemate took slightly more formal pictures, but that was it. And it was fine. One of my best friends was married in a courthouse during covid (they were going to marry in any case, but immigration issues pushed it forward) and I think all the pictures, and the movie, were taken on phone cams.

And I have plenty of friends who had nice weddings with at least 50 attendees who didn't spend $50K or more on it, either. That's a choice. I had an inexpensive wedding, then I bought us a house three months later.

Wedding photography is very expensive, so it’s normal to want nice photos given how much they cost. It’s also the happiest day of your lives, and the only time you’re surrounded by all of your family and friends for a lot of people.
