I call it the MADD effect. I worked with a guy that told me that in the 70s he was driving home drunk, he was very ashamed of it, but he was swerving all over the road and a cop stopped him. The cop told him "ok leave your car here, I'll drive you home, come get it tomorrow". That's just how it was back then. So along comes MADD and they accomplish great things, awareness campaigns, spot checks, all funded by donations largely from people that lost people or knew people that lost people. They had amazing success, the numbers of people killed by drunk drivers went down. But as the number of people killed by drunk drivers went down, so did donations. So did they celebrate? No, they changed the parameters, now it was "drinking and driving accidents", so if a drunk driver was involved it counted, even if the drunk driver was going through a green light and was T-boned and killed by someone running a red, it counted as a drinking and driving accident. Now the numbers were scary again, and more people were donating money.

Groups like feminists make money off people being afraid. As the saying goes: "when all you have is a hammer, every problem is a nail". Feminist groups and publications need people to think women have it hard for people to give them money, so they invent reasons that women have it hard.

There was an article years ago claiming that women are disproportionally murdered in the workplace, the whole piece was "as if women don't have it hard enough as it is" before finally getting to the numbers. Of men that die in the workplace, 10% are murdered, for women, it's 15%. Women have it worse, right? Well, that would be true, if women were 50% of workplace deaths. Math majors out there, what's the bigger number: 10% of 95, or 15% of 5? More men are murdered on the job than women die on the job of all causes combined and yet this article would have you think women have it worse.

I don't know if it would be in good taste to take charge on any individual cases, but that feels like an area of opportunity to illustrate how their idea of power dynamics are rules for thee, not for me.

For example, there is a popular streamer (Sykkuno) who is currently going through a "Google Doc" allegation. It looks like it is winding down. I'll do the legwork for this if you think it would be helpful. Some key points:

He was accused of cheating. (This part was undeniably true, but there are some details we don't have)

He was also labeled a predator. (This was sensationalism and the evidence provided actually showed otherwise)

His entire friend group immediately jumped on the hate train, some have backpedaled, most have floundered when pressed.

More women have come forward (Keeping in mind these are 3-4+ years after the fact) to "tell their truth" about how he targeted them because they were smaller content creators.

In the original evidence provided (And most of the follow-up accounts) we see that the women accusing Sykkuno of "targeting" them were the ones who initiated the conversation. They had consensual sex, or by their own admission, stated that they never told him to stop when it began. The woman who first came forward forgot to omit the parts where she basically told him that she would forgive him if he would have chosen to be with her instead of his current girlfriend.

To go further, after he and his girlfriend came responded to it, his girlfriend specifically asked people to stop sharing private chats and details about it, because it was negatively impacting her. This seemed like a reasonable ask, given that all of them at some point claimed they cared about his GF being victimized in all of this. Yet there are actors continuing to expose more chats and talk about it.

So we have a nuanced situation. He was undeniably cheating; this was wrong and clearly an indefensible act. I don't know if he needs to be canceled over it, necessarily, and it seems like it could have been related to general relationship issues which complicates moral judgements, but either way, no one really defended him on this and all agreed it was wrong.

The part that created lots of drama was how they labeled him a predator. Specifically, they cited that every person he "manipulated" (Which is a very strong, even misleading, word) was a smaller content creator, therefore he had a power dynamic that allowed him to prey on their vulnerability.

And normally this might sound like a reasonable take. Except that it was obviously just a twisted narrative being used to justify calling him a predator. Sykkuno's entire personality is that he is a "nice, inexperienced, kawaii" guy, so it becomes obvious this term was specifically chosen to maximize the clickbait effect.

Mujin, the YouTuber who launched a coordinated video alongside the Google Doc, has received backlash and set the original video to private. They made an apology video that felt more like a fake apology, stated they will leave it up for 10 days and will delete it afterwards. So Mujin and the women that "bravely came forward" to label Sykkuno as a predator are getting off with a slap on the wrist, meanwhile, Sykkuno will permanently be associated with the term "predator", possibly for the rest of his life.

The most irritating part about this is that "Sykkuno is a serial cheater" would have probably blown up just as big as this did. No one would have felt any need to jump to his defense over it. Instead of talking about the mistakes he actually made, all discourse is focused entirely on the hyperbolic responses from his friend group and how this was a targeted character assassination scheme.

The idea that a bigger content creator has a power imbalance on smaller content creators is also being misused here. The "power dynamic" isn't similar to Harvey Weinstein and aspiring actresses; Sykkuno doesn't have that kind of pull despite being a popular streamer. He can't blacklist upcoming content creators. Not to mention, no one showed him using his status as a popular streamer to promise that he could increase their follower counts or anything remotely to that effect.

This is but one of many situations where content creators have been accused of serious misconduct and it turned out to be a twisted narrative or even an outright lie.
