In this specific case, it seems a broad warrant was reasonable. And it seems it worked, they caught him (and hopefully he will be put away for a long time).

However, if the DNA records of the innocents are kept on file (i.e not destroyed) I would strongly object to that.

It was wrong to test THE whole staff indiscriminately.

You start by testing the staff that actually had a reasonable chance to come into contact with the patient.

You don't test someone who, say, wasn't even in the same block at the time of the incident. It's not like hospitals don't have timetables.

Why not just give out our DNA & prints to a global database "just in case" ? :P

I still feel as though the DA was too broad in their search. So yes, I would still feel my bodily autonomy was violated if I was served a warrant in a fishing expedition like this and therefore believe it to be wrong.

I think many crimes can be solved if the government used mass surveillance, face recognition and constant overhead drone surveillance. It’ll be interesting to see how far we are willing to go wrt giving up some level of privacy to solve crime. There’s some very interesting technology coming down the pipeline.

It reminds me of that drone surveillance company from the Iraq War that attempted to use the technology back home to constantly fly overhead and automatically give everyone traffic tickets. People in Baltimore flipped out at the suggestion and on both sides of the political aisle.

I'm sure its written out somewhere on their contraact they need to do some random testing and stuff like that. I doubt its the first time its ever happened and most hospitals would include something like this.

Get out of here with the idea that only men have to submit dna to catch rapist, Women should have to submit Dna too, aint going to put only dudes at risk of having their Dna misused. Naw if it gets that far we all submitting dna lets catch those female rapist too.

There's no legitimate reason why you would be against the test. Guilt or irrational paranoia are the only two from which that argument stems.

Its a horrible idea.

Someone was raped at a school? Test all the men there.

Someone was raped in a small town? Get on with that testing.

etc.

There is going to be danger in a free society, its part of the downside. The upside is that governments can start using this sort of information for suppression as well, so its best they not be allowed to go there.

There are different kinds of wrongs. Recording your boss maxing sexual remarks is wrong because it's illegal to do it. Whether the boss actually made sexual remarks or not has no bearing on whether your actions were wrong. Both actions are wrong.

I never did; and I think that complaining about the way the search was conducted on nebulous "being in control over your personal (genetic) information"-thing because this could be a precedent for blanket DNA testing in order to exert authoritarian control over a populace is a slippery slope fallacy if there ever was one.

I'm super against government intrusion but it seems reasonable here. Comatose women gets raped, hence test the staff and see who did it.

How is this even a question? It was a criminal justice investigation and he got caught for rape. Deserves to be raped himself and imo I hope the prisoners get him

But Honestly it probably should a violation to subject employees against their will to a DNA test. It seems too broad.
