Let’s say you’re married to a nurse (RN) and when you met her, she was getting her PhD in nursing and working part-time as an RN.

The PhD is a 3-5 year doctorate which most reputable colleges cover tuition for, so she is getting it DEBT FREE, and is doing well. She works part time as a nurse in a clinic and overall, her salary isn’t low during school but she is also very busy. You fall in love and get married.

Next, she graduates from the program and aggressively applies to 40 different jobs at 40 different schools. The job market for a PhD in nursing is competitive, but less competitive than other fields. However, she gets no local jobs and gets an offer out of state. The job is at a prestigious university, paying about $70-75k a year, but once she establishes herself she can make $100-150k through research and teaching. It would be an immense benefit to her career and to your family income.

Do you move for her? Do you encourage her to stay where you’re at and just keep working as an RN (she is still working part time and would have a hard time finding full time work due to being overqualified), or do you encourage her to leave while you keep working where you are? Or do you divorce?
