On one side the left is no longer pretending to be supportive of the working class and is going full blown identity politics and we know that a huge part of identity politics is about women and feminism. Feminism is predicated upon the notion that women are oppressed and discriminated by men so one of the possible ramifications of this is adopting policies aimed at sheltering and protecting women by any possible slight (real or perceived) coming from the male segment of the population.
On the other side there's a growing presence in the West of immigrants from Third World countries coming from more traditionalist cultures (expecially immigrants of muslim persuasion) who believe in a certain level of gender segregation. It's not far fetched to think that a growing number of people with a different and less liberal culture will affect gender relationships in our societies.
