Cleopatra was technically the last female ruler of Egypt and her taking sides in an internal roman caused Egypt to be absorbed into the Roman Empire.

The story of Cleopatra is quite fascinating. The contrast between Cleopatra's approach to building power (siring children from various opposing world leaders, back room politics, unstable alliances through black mail or coercion, leaning hard on her status as a deity to the Egyptians) versus Augustus Caesar's approach (employing economics, engineering and human organisation on a large scale to build a massive army that he alone controls) ultimately led to the stereotypes on women, their "evil ways" and their supposed lack of competence.

On one side you have a literal goddess representing the very essence of Egyptian culture basing her entire strategy on the principles of back room politics and power through influence.

On the other you have a regular man basing his entire strategy on the principles of hard work, building and organisation.

The failure of Cleopatra resulted in the death of Egypt' belief in their gods. Augustus capitalised on that further by painting Cleopatra as an evil witch who destroyed her civilisation through dishonesty and manipulation.

Every major stereotype that was slapped on women could be traced easily back to Cleopatra's reputation:

Became pregnant from three major rulers of the period, two of them Roman in order to secure potential heirs to the major empires (slut)
Gained a Roman army through influence over Marc Antony, a Roman general popular with average Romans (manipulation, corruption)
Employed intimidation tactics on her neighbouring middle eastern allies to secure military pacts ("bossy")
Chose to strip naked and be bitten by a venomous snake rather than face humiliation. Augustus used that brilliantly in his propaganda afterwards to claim that he stormed her palace and faced the naked dying queen bringing ultimate shame on her legacy. (I'll leave you to think of the stereotypes related to lack of will, strength etc.)

Had Augustus lost to Cleopatra Rome would have remained intact as he was seen as one in a succession of Roman generals.

Cleopatra was different. She was worshipped as the manifestation of Egypt's Gods. Defeat meant one thing: the death of Ancient Egypt.

In many ways Cleopatra was an exceptional strategist and leader, it was really her reliance on flimsy pacts and proxy armies that did her in.

Cleopatra was painted as the erotic seductress steeped in "oriental" mysticism and superstition.

Augustus Caesar was painted as the logical, hard working, utilitarian executive.

Before the fall of Egypt it was not uncommon for women of nobility to hold power or run large trade empires. In fact Cleopatra's practice to have relations with many men and be impregnated by them was seen as her right as a supreme ruler - the men in this situation were seen as consorts. This was the case for most eastern kingdoms, empires of the time (the exception of course being the patriarchal Rome). That almost completely stopped after the fall of Egypt and remained the case for centuries.

The "patriarchy" of Rome proved to the world that their system was the best.

How many societies were left with women even having any political input at the start of feminism and post modernity? Not women ruling but women having any say? All of the societies that tried it (and surely there were many, humanity is quite diverse and has been around for many generations) were wiped out by a patriarchy that gave women the correct amount of political power for an ideal society (none)

Why do you think all humans think shit smells disgusting? Probably because it's very hazardous and most people who evolved to like it died?

Women don't destroy civilizations. However, a common theme in the decline of great civilizations is entering a phase of decadence, and this decadence often (but not always) is accompanied by the replacement of the patriarchy with a less stable system.

The collapse of a civilization is often accompanied with a fluctuation in the role of women, which may contribute to the decline. However, I don't think it is a prime cause of it.

China. Empress Dowager Cixi. One of the last empress/emperor of China. Ruling the qing dynasty which was the last chinese dynasty. Cixi is partly responsible for not modernizing and unable to defend china from western powers. China used to be a powerful country in ancient times. Now its weaker.

I think the statement "females destroy civilization" needs to be rephrased. I don't think much of human history is men versus women. Usually they are side by side playing different roles in their given culture. I think a better way to approach it is to remove morality or even agency from the equation completely. What happens when a civilization falls, what role do women play in these scenarios, and what are their motivations?

Last time I checked, Catherine The Great, Elizabeth I and others ruled during a time of prosperity and expansion for both empires. Although Queen Bouidicca did lead a rebellion against the Romans and won, at least for a little while.....

Well, women have never actually built a lasting civilization. It's hard to look for the destruction of things that were never created.

Women haven't been given the amount of power and control required to destroy a civilization, so it's not to say that women are not capable of destroying a civilization, but rather, that they never got the opportunity.

In other words, men built most societies, ruled most societies, and therefore it would be logical to say that any civilization that was destroyed was not destroyed by women.
