Just limiting city specific behaviors to hypergamy is too narrow a focus. There's a great deal of theory on how cramming so many people into one place erodes community values - look up Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft

I don't think it matters if it's in a city, the country or anywhere else. Unless you're in a nursing home, there are always way more men putting themselves out there and it's not even close. Every bar, every night club, every dating app, men will outnumber women. Plus when you factor in how much less picky men are and the disparity becomes even greater. Let's face it, it's a buyer's market if you're female. We want them way more than they want us. Supply and demand. Of course they'll cash in on hypergamy. When they have the choice (which they do, overwhelmingly) why wouldn't they choose this route?

Actually, having been a single gal in NYC, it's the opposite - NY is so packed with models, actresses, and other beautiful women that NYC men are notorious for dragging their feet on commitment.

That's not hypergamy. That's just a bullshit wall of defensiveness (aka bitch shield) that completely goes away when you speak in a loud voice, act unstifled, aren't apologetic, etc.

Guys who take these super dumb, pure fantasy "resume requirements" you see on dating apps literally are really fucking themselves in the ass, it's no more than a written shit test. Do you really think that guys who fuck these women meet all these requirements, or even more than 1-2 of them? Fuck no.

It's like taking the "5 years of experience needed" listing literally when the job advertised is entry level. It's practically just to weed out the people who won't have the modicum of perseverance to ignore the stated requirements.

I've experimented with swiping girls on Tinder in dozens of cities around the world (including NYC), and despite reading probably thousands of profiles, I don't think I've ever seen one with a laundry list of high standards. Even the supposedly ubiquitous "must be 6ft+" is pretty rare.

Granted, they could have unwritten high standards, particularly on a place like Tinder that doesn't put as much of an emphasis on the profile. But still, I strongly suspect that the meme of "women have such CRAZY high standards in online dating!" is mainly due to a) a small handful of outliers that get shared on places like /r/ChoosingBeggars and b) rationalisations from unattractive men with crappy online dating profiles/message crafting skills.

Bigger cities attract more hot women, so it should be balancing out. I think it does in the way that everyone can be more picky. Guys get more picky as well.

To the extent that living in the biggest cities is expensive there's obviously going to be a sorting effect. If cities are full of higher-socioeconomic-status individuals we can expect any gold-digging-driven mating to be more likely in cities.

It'll be stronger in more densely populated areas. It's like with applications to competitive universities and jobs, if you get so many applicants... you can afford to be picky.

Though, it backfires when women who aren't "suitable" for a tall, good looking, athletically built, high earning man with etc etc, assume they can compete for those sort of men with women who defo have the attributes to get those guys.

everyone's got their "complete package", men and women.

the difference is how they adjust to reality. very rarely do people get what they want, or even remotely close to what they want. it's the ability to understand this and not turn away potential mate that has all the right attributes that matters for the kind of relationship you desire. if you ask most women, they'll tell you they want a man who's taller than them, makes more than them, etc. but would you trade those for poor character? bad life choices? heck, even a kid?

cities are denser in population, especially with today, internet makes people think there are more choices than ever. for women, they may think their dating pool (or the pool of eligible men to choose from) is near infinite. on top of that, people tend to make better money in the city and jobs are more varied. when women make their own living and don't have to depend on men, of course they're going to ask for more than just "a pulse and a paycheck".
