Summary: since our standard advice is to lift, here is a PSA to avoid serious injury or death while performing the bench press.

Obviously this is not a post on sexual strategy (I hope that can be overlooked due to the importance of the message) but I just watched a video on wtf that made me wonder if any RP are doing this:

That grip, with the thumb behind the bar instead of wrapped around, is called the suicide grip for a reason, people die using it:

Note: I could not clearly see the thumb position on this attempted lift but the release of the weight leads me to believe it was a suicide grip. Regardless, this a possible outcome of a (suicide grip) bench press fail.

This grip is thought by some to activate different muscles than the standard grip but this has never been demonstrated. What has been shown is that it can result in serious or fatal accidents. It is very difficult circumstance to spot for as, instead of a slow drop of the bar from muscle fatigue, the weight comes crashing down with no resistance.

There are some techniques to make using the suicide grip safer but it is generally an inherently risky move, with little if any benefit, that should just be avoided. Happy benching.

tl;dr: do not use the suicide grip (thumb behind bar) while benching so as to avoid the possibility of a fatal slip.

Edit: opinion on grip in second video
