Anyone else's pets hate their ex? My cat was terrified of mine (she's never been that way w anyone else). He was actually hurt when I told him the cat was right about him. 😂🤷‍♀️ Her judgement will be taken seriously in the future.

Ooph. This hits home. My dog never liked my abusive ex and I didn’t get why. I just thought I socialized her poorly. I talked to his ex-gf and her dog acted the SAME WAY. Her dog was older so she recovered. But mine was a puppy when I was dating him.

Edit : my dog still hates men. Any man. It’s very hard to get her to trust a man.

Had an ex who, prior to meeting his cat, kept insisting the cat would not come near anyone but him, didn't like anyone but him, on and on. I befriended the cat. He seethed.

My ex and I were fighting one night and my 80 lb Border Collie jumped up onto his back and bit him. Anytime the ex got too close to the kids, the dog would charge up to him barking. Ex has been gone for 5 years, but I still have the dog. He is old and chubby and snores but I love that dog more than I ever loved my ex.

I moved in with a male friend (not a bf, he was gay) and my cat was really stressed out the whole lease period, and even started vomiting regularly. I eventually figured out he was stealing my adderall prescription from my underwear drawer the entire time we lived together. My cat knew, I swear. After I moved out, she stopped vomiting and was not stressed. I love her so much.

I had a BAD guy at my house once, before I knew he was a bad guy. I served him cake, and he set the plate down, and my cat ate his cake, something she has never done to anyone else. And yeah, she was right about him.

My dog loved my narc ex but that's because my dog is a total pickme and attention whore.

She loves literally any person who makes eye contact with her which is DUMB because people have tried to steal her MULTIPLE TIMES because she is so smol and cute and indiscriminately friendly.

Even after all that she still trusts everyone. She would be worse than useless if anyone ever tried to break into my house. I swear she would just do her derpy happy face and roll onto her back like "yay, robbers! Belly scratches! Love me!"

It's like she has absolutely zero drive for self preservation. Still love her tho 🐶😍

If I'm remembering correctly, the book The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker (ESSENTIAL FDS reading) has a whole chapter on why your pets seem to know things about people you don't. I think it comes down to you basically gaslighting yourself to ignore the warning signs, but your gut instinct knows the dude is whack. Your pets sense your gut instinct and respond to what is being said, without the "oh it's probably fine" self-gaslighting to temper their response.

I personally think it's a bit of column A and a bit of column B :)

My ex didn't like my dog, was mean to him, "growled" at him and scared him off for fun. He's an adorable, sweet and shy Pomeranian, doesn't even charge, and hides behind my legs :/

I'm allergic to cats and don't like most of them but I'd never be intentionally mean to them or hiss at them. Men just never pretend to care about anything unless they're trying to get in your pants. Once they're already there all acts are off.

My old childhood cat (Kittles) HATED my ex fiance; always biting at him, growling, hissing. When my current boyfriend came over while we were still friends, Kittles on his shoes and whined when he was moved off of them so my friend could get ready to leave. After the current boyfriend and I started dating and finally got a place together, Kittles followed my boyfriend around and loved on him something fierce. The night before we put him down Kittles was snuggling and loving on him. I'll never forget how he looked at both of us the night before. My current boyfriend literally saved my life by preventing me from committing suicide, he gave me a wad of cash to blow on whatever snacks I wanted after my abortion and got my heating pad and blankets ready while I was gone, he stood up to his father after he was disrespectful towards me multiple times, he makes me laugh when I'm at my worst. My cat was right about him.

My dog refused to let my ex show me any affection. Is he wanted sex she would rush to lay on top of my and glare at him. We even got the dog together but she was not a fan of him touching me.

After we broke up I called an old FWB (i know i know) because even when i did have sex with ex it was short and unfulfilled and FWB knew what he was doing. All of a sudden my little girl is fine with this new person touching me (as long as he pets her beforehand)

I have never seen my dog growl or snarl at anyone cuddling with me anymore than I did with my ex (her former “stepdad”). I thought it was jealousy at first, but the dog definitely knew he was bad news bears. Anyone I have introduced to her since then, she warms up well with.

For 3 months or so before my most recent ex dumped me with no warning, my dog was peeing in the house in the same spot anytime he would come over.

After he dumped me and stopped coming over, my dog stopped peeing in the house.

My dog knew something was up and was trying to warn me. It is amazing how perceptive animals can be!!!

This is interesting. Gavin de Becker ("Gift of Fear") says that pets don't form their own opinions but pick up on your micro-expressions. It's possible that you yourself made it known to your pet that you didn't trust or feared someone before you knew it yourself. Does anybody have any sources for other theories? I'd love to learn more.

My cat was very aggressive, vomited often and scratch herself excessively the whole year I live together with her my ex. ( I was visiting a vet, but he didn't know the cause of this behaviour). She didn't want to let him to bed with me on a several occasions. Didn't let him pet her. It was odd to me because he grew up in household with five cats. Fun detail: he was so selfish to thinks one of his childhood cat is gay and is in love with him.

a lot of times it means something but sometimes the pet just senses something else, like I know a guy who some male pets don't like, he's very masculine and has aggressive energy even when he's not doing anything. also animals like the opposite sex, doesn't mean a boy cat won't like a guy, but that happens a lot where a girl animal prefers the male owner, or the male dog prefers the female owner. Birds are very extreme this way also

I trust my pets' judgments! Granted, some of them can be won over, but I believe their initial reactions are the ones to look for. Animals can sense things that we can't.

My dog hated my exes, and would hide and run from them. I would put him in their lap (I say sorry to my pup now!), and he would look visibly uncomfortable and try to crawl out whenever he could. He's yet to meet my current boyfriend but we'll see how he reacts to him!
