Silicone rings are great for those who want the sentiment of a wedding ring but don't want ring avulsion or can't wear jewelry for their jobs/hobbies. THEY. ARE. NOT. ENGAGEMENT. GIFTS. Even if my husband wore a silicone ring for work, I have a beautiful set that I want to wear. If I wanted a silicone ring for work/hobbies, or didn't want an engagement ring at all, I would make it known because it was true instead of me being desperate to bag a husband.

I had a hand in the ring I got, because my friend brought me to a jewelry store, so I can see what looks good. I have sausage fingers and I needed the ring to compliment my hand, I didn't know he'd buy the specific ring I liked, but he did because he FUCKING LISTENS, oh and it was purchased at the correct size too.

My mom made my dad return her original engagement ring and get a different one because he picked something in a style she didn't like. He was happy to do so when he realized his mistake, he didn't know what to buy because my mother never wore jewelry to hint at a style and he wanted to surprise her.🤷 If a man wants to lock you down with a ring, he should buy something you like. I would see it as a red flag if the man didn't care if the ring suited the woman's tastes.

This poor woman..this is so embarrassing for her life and her soul. When my dad was proposing to my stepmother, he had her pick out her favorite engagement ring, then paid the company to make a custom version of the ring just for her and named it her name. They listed it on the website and when he was going to propose, he asked her to look at the website and point out the ring she liked again. She was so confused when she saw it had her name and a personalized message asking for her hand, and when she turned around, my dad had the ring and was on one knee. That’s how it should be done. Pickmes and their stupid ring pop bullshit have always gotten on my nerves.

Men are so arrogant that they don't realize that there's a difference between fashion or costume jewelry and fine jewelry. I've seen so many men propose with a cheap silver ring with a soft stone that won't hold up long term- it may be pretty now but in 5 years it'll be unwearable and hideous because that's the nature of cheap jewelry- that's why its cheap. Meanwhile, a ring made out of gold or platinum set with a diamond, sapphire or ruby will still look decent in 50 years- it'll be worn but not falling apart. With jewelry, as with so many things, durability costs more- but men don't realize that because they think of it as some frivolous 'girl' thing that's beneath them to learn about. They assume its all about appearance and status- it never occurs to them that there might be technical requirements in choosing a ring you'll wear every day for the rest of your life (or until the marriage ends). Dumbasses.

It's time for some new traditions. The diamond ring thing is a scam made by the diamond companies (hear me out before the downvotes). That's not to say we shouldn't have lovely rings we want, this is to say that this stuff USED to be decided by the couple together. Proposals usually didn't have rings in the past. If I could snap my fingers and begin a new tradition, it would be to ask someone to marry you with some kind of common placeholder. I don't know, maybe a ribbon or something. Then, both people pick out a ring together. Because, yes, there is a lot of thought that goes into what everyone wants. I got lucky and accidentally stumbled across the ring he was thinking of buying me. I honestly would have hated it. He knew what stone I'd like (emerald) and the metal (white gold), but he totally missed the mark on style and size. That emerald was a damn Superbowl ring. I rarely wear jewelry, and did not want that thing taking up all that realestate on my hand. I came clean (it really was an unavoidable accident that I found it), and told him I'd send him a few examples of what I like. He really appreciated that, and did a good job on the choice when the proposal came a few months later (that was a nerve racking few months, I was expecting a ring to fly out of anywhere at anytime).

But, yeah, this would all be solved a lot easier if men didn't have to go it alone. There are a lot of intricacies to consider, and it sucks for everyone when it doesn't go right.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a male friend who outted himself to me as being a LVM. He wanted my opinion on an argument he had with his ex. To give you some background, he makes very good money as he is literally a rocket scientist (aerospace engineer). He has a repulsive habit of dating women much younger than him and he is in his 40’s, overweight, dubious facial hair, and is aging very poorly. This girl he was dating was like 23 and started sending him photos of the engagement rings she liked (HINT HINT). Well, he was horrified and disgusted at her audacity....not at signaling she wanted to marry, but that she had the sheer temerity to suggest rings that were in the $2000 range. He thought that was an outrageous sum. 😂😂😂 He was so angry that they fought and broke up. He accused her of being a gold digger and then he was bitter when she had someone new in a couple of months. It just struck me as funny that a man his age thought he wasn’t expected to provide value to a woman who was willing compromise (or rather sacrifice) youth and attractiveness in her partner. He was getting a young pretty wife, she was getting an old, unhealthy, ugly man who was too cheap to buy her a moderate engagement ring. She split and got her ring from someone else.

They must forget that one of the reasons marriage even became an institution was for concentrated and heritable wealth. Hence all the dowry and ring stuff—it was a way not just to show love or how serious, but to bring wealth into the family line and pass wealth down to the children. They could just not do the ring thing at all if none of that matters.

I definitely had a huge say in my rings over the years because I worked in jewelry before and know a thing or two about quality and investment pieces. Certs, everything—the whole point is to have something of worth for the family to depend on in dire circumstances (Goddess forbid) or to pass down for future wealth. If none of that matters, one doesn’t have to have rings or any of it, but they can’t also turn around and shame other women for caring, cuz that’s bogus.

this reminds me of one of the cutest HVM stories i have ever heard. a friend of mine lost her wedding ring. so her husband bought her a new, equally beautiful one. and he took her to her favorite chinese restaurant. when the fortune cookies came, she broke hers open to find the new ring.

he had gone to the restaurant earlier in the day and somehow had found a cookie with a big enough opening to slip the ring inside, and glued the package closed again. i think he intercepted the waiter to slip the cookie into the cheque basket.

amazing. she loves to tell that story.
