My husband moved out 4 days ago. I feel AMAZING. My house is spotless, I’m exercising and eating well and sleeping and got the news today my daughter got a full time slot at preschool. So for Mother’s Day this year I’m taking PTO and spoiling the SHIT out of myself. I don’t need/want any half ass mans version of “taking care of me” for one day a year, I’ll do it myself. I suggest you do too!

My birthday always falls on/near Mother's Day. I'm a mother too. Every year, this timeframe is such a weird mix. My birthday is my favorite - always has been. My husband has never given a shit - "birthdays and holidays aren't important to me."

Mother’s day when I lived with my ex and son: I booked lunch somewhere and received a cheap supermarket plant (I love cut flowers, not a fan of plants - regardless of whether that is logical, my husband knew this). My husband is grumpy as usual all day.

Mother’s day now I live with my son: son orders a card and a surprise from my awesome Amazon wish list (on my stored bank card and with a budget!), he brings me breakfast in bed, makes lunch and we eat out somewhere nice. My son is fun, excited and happy all day (effortlessly because that is his nature). My son is 10.

Seriously, back when I was married, I would buy myself Mother’s Day gifts so I could post on social media how much my husband cared. He didn’t. Barf.

On top of that, the last Mother’s Day I spent with him, I asked to go to a local museum. No gifts, just a free day at the museum. He begrudgingly took me, refused to stand near me, hold my hand or talk to me, and then I found out he was texting his AP the whole time.

But Father’s Day? That was me planning BBQs, inviting all of his friends over, special gifts, cleaning before/after and sex to top it all off.

It’s such a crock of shit that society expects us to be okay with the huge double standard.

I hate Mother's Day, I've never had anyone celebrate me in the 6 years I've been a mom. My first mother's day it was made clear that in my family of origin Mother's Day was only about my mom. My dad said 'you're not my mom' so he wasn't going to do anything for me. I've planned, prepared and paid for every mother's day (I have a brother, but he's mostly useless). Since I got divorced it's even worse, my daughter is too young to do anything for me on her own (I did get a very sweet card this year). Last year my best friend had a cake delivered to me and I broke down in tears, it was the first time anyone had done something to celebrate just me on mother's day. This year we celebrated early and I got to spend $50 on 'my' own mother's day brunch.

I feel like a bad mom because my daughter is with her dad on mother's day this year, and since I already 'celebrated' I'm not going to change the schedule to see her. Instead I'm buying myself a 1.5 hour massage and then I'm going to get high and eat candy.

I know it's just a stupid random day and my daughter tells me how much she loves me and how I'm her favorite person everyday, but Mother's Day is a huge disappointment every year and anytime I think about it, it makes me cry.

I'm sorry I had to comment again because I just can't... I read the article and it's basically he let her down, so to keep herself from being disappointed she lowered her expectations. I LOVE LOVE LOVE giving people gifts. It makes me so happy!!! Even at my work (I work with people) I make them balloon garlands and buy them unique gifts based on what they like. They are so sweet and appreciative when they open their gifts. Someone's birthday is coming up at my work that loves puzzles, cats, animals and full house (tv show).

I booked an online interactive baby farm animal visit since they can't go out and got a personalized puzzle of fullhouse.

I would have got more but we have a budget.

So I will never understand how people can be so half-assed. It makes me so happy to give nice gifts! I just make sure to give gifts to people that deserve it. This is why I have such a hard time accepting this. I should get what I give.

For this Mother’s Day I made reservations at a local high class restaurant’s Mother’s Day brunch for me and my baby. I don’t know if his dad will bother planning anything or going shopping for a gift with him (we’re NOT together) but I still want to have an amazing time with my son. His dad has consistently proven that he cannot set the bar, so I do. Next weekend I will take my son to pick out something special for his father for Father’s Day. Gift giving is a skill and I want to teach him how to make someone feel special.

Fun fact: when my son was small and we were together I never got a Mother’s Day gift. This was because, as my EX said “You’re not my mother.”

On mother's day all the women in my family come together because every one is a mother of at least another woman. The daughters and sons give the mothers gifts like flowers, sappy DIY presents and home made bakery. We thank our mothers for our existance and for putting up with us.
