Haa this reminds me of hanging out with some friends of friends. One guy was telling the story of how he met his girlfriend - he signed up for the spanish lessons she taught to meet her. He was saying how it took him several weeks to "get her number." One of the other guys looked confused: "Didn't she have to give you her number when you signed up for her classes?"

We all looked at him like the idiot he was, before the boyfriend guy slowly explained how he wanted her to actually want him to call her - not just get her number.

One time when I was still a teenager a man rang our doorbell and pretended to be mute. He kept tapping on his arm with his finger as to ask for the current time. The thing is I could clearly see another man sitting in his black modern looking car on the street behind him. Don't radios have clocks now? Even some news channel announce the time here. Besides why did this man get out who "obviously" could not communicate with me and not his driver? I was also living in a rural area in a very small village.. we have a huge clock tower in the middle of the town that rings its bells every 15min. Even our neighbour town had some sort of statue with a digital clock that is clearly visible from the main street. This entire story just didn't make sense. I was so thankful for our dog at the time because the man didn't attempt to get closer or try to get inside the house. I simply told him turn around there is the clock tower visible right behind him and Goodbye because no way in hell I'm going to let him in or leave my door unguarded just to check the time.

Ugh, this gave me the creeps.

Reminded me of the time when I lived out in the middle of nowhere and some guy randomly showed up on my doorstep well after dark and asked to come inside and use my phone. (This was in the days of landlines.) He claimed his car broke down and he needed to call someone. I was home alone with our Rottweiler who was EXTREMELY protective of me. She was going apeshit barking and lunging at him through the screen door. "I was like, "no sorry, she's very aggressive and won't let you in the house." He asked me to put her away so he could come in and use the phone and I was like, HELL THE FUCK NO. I ended up passing him our cordless phone so he could make the call and told him to leave it on the porch when he was done. I went and checked a few minutes later and the phone was there but he was gone. It left me feeling so creeped out all night long.

Maybe he was telling the truth, maybe not. But that dog had really good instincts about people. There was no way I was letting him in my house, even though I can be a bit of a people-pleaser.

She saved me from two creeps at a state park earlier that summer too. I miss that dog terribly!

Honestly tho, couple years ago had a random dude borrow my phone and for this reason I immediately blocked and deleted the number he called, and that was long before I found FDS, and was a massive pushover.

This is an excellent example of: men do not ask strangers for help, they were not socialized to do so. If a man in public is asking you for help, he’s likely lying and it’s a manipulation tactic of some kind.

I briefly dated a LVM who would borrow other people's phones to call me, and would always leave a message saying "This is my new phone, so call me at this number"

I would text the number and the person would be like "yeah this weirdo asked to borrow my phone"
