I'm a soldier and I'm okay with this.

I have no problem having a woman in a combat job, so long as she meets the same standards for that job as the men. If you she can lift a 100 pound artillery shell over her head, if she can drag a 200 pound body to safety, and she can wrestle a grown man to the ground and choke him out... and she wants to do all those things... hell yeah, more power to her. I'd be proud to serve next to her.

See, that's equality.

Lowering the standards so that more women can take those jobs, just to have more women isn't equality. That's favoritism.

Agreed. It's not "leveling the playing field" it's moving the goalposts.

[–]ABC_Florida 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Politicians are clever. Leveling the filed for both genders, makes the differences disappear.

[–]Jowitness 69 points70 points71 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Dangerous favoritism

[–]Cherry__wine 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That has not happened yet and is mere speculation that it will. If it happens, I agree with you, but I personally doubt it will, because the marines will explain why it's a bad idea and whoever wants to lower the standards so more women can get into any combat role will realise they are right. You are taking one guys opinion as fact.

[–]troubledtimez 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Lowering the standards endangers everyone. Suddenly everyone must move slower or take more care than would otherwise be needed in a situation. It changes the dynamic and puts lives in danger.

There are certain jobs that need to keep a very strict physical requirements. Regardless of gender or race etc.

[–]the-pathfinder 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You say that, but I was under the impression that the military did studies that showed mixed gender combat units (I clearly don't know my terminology) would be disruptive because the males would get distracted by women and want to protect them, reducing overall effectiveness and safety for the entire unit.

[–]Random_Link_Roulette 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Wouldn't that just be affirmative action?

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think the way affirmative action is supposed to work is that if the guys and girls met the requirement, and the guys outperformed the girls, still choosing some girls over technically more qualified guys

[–]FiveLions 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So most of life?

[–]TheMagicStik 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (23 children) | Copy Link

Bruh I work at a warehouse where I frequently have to lift 100 pounds over my head. 90% of the male population cannot do that, it took me a while to get strong enough to do so.

[–]MasterAssFace 47 points48 points49 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But with weight training, 90% of combat age men definitely could.

[–]lodro 12 points13 points14 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Missing the point. If 9/10 males can't lift 100lbs overhead (unlikely), an even greater proportion of females cannot. Whatever proportion of males is able to train and build that capacity, a much smaller proportion of females will be able.

[–][deleted] 58 points59 points60 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

hey now lets just compare your warehouse job to the navy seals' combat tests...

[+]TheMagicStik -9 points-8 points-7 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well a good portion of the warehouse are ex-millitary, it's pretty tough work.

[–]Nathan1266 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The largest and most successful logistical force on the Planet is the United States Military.

[–]JayHuff4346 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Are you kidding me?

I could lift 100lbs over my head when I was 15-16.

[–]irwin1003 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

It's different when it's a bar with plates vs something uneven under pressure.

I helped a couple friends families move when I was 16, some boxes being 100+ lbs, was heavy and a little tough, but I'd get it done.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Was there a requirement to do that job though?

[–]smookykins -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

90% of the male population can't do that? Sedentary lazy fatasses.

[–]TheMagicStik 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

100 pounds is a lot of weight, getting it to chest level isn't that tough but over your head is another story.

[–]Ultimate_Failurerenown for his western grip handjobs 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How do you do it? Clean and jerk?

[–]smookykins -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I weighed 130# in college and was taught to do this in weightlifting class. I now weigh ~170#, with a 33" waist.

[–]MasterAssFace 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

People who run and eat healthy every day are sedentary lazy fatasses because they can't lift a 100 lb shell over their heads?

[–]TheMagicStik -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah there are different posistions in the warehouse and for the most part you don't have to lift that much but my job is basically solely working with 100~ pound or so boxes so proper lifting is all I really have to care about. Once I get past 120 though I definitely get back up for that.

[–]smookykins 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

It's sexism and bigotry.

[–]smookykins 12 points13 points14 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Because I think lowering the standards just so more women get to pretend that they are better than they really are is sexist against men?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That shit is also maybe going to get you killed.

[–]ABC_Florida 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I still don't think men and women should serve together. Even if they both meet the male standards. You can have a gay guy in a platoon, and have less complications. And how many gay men are out there? In the US the LGBT community is estimated around 4%. So 1 out of 25 male soldiers is openly gay. So a straight hook-up has a much higher chance, even if you consider women being more picky.

Okay, so you say, regulatory IUD to make sure they don't get pregnant during missions. There is a problem here, that goes against "Her body, her choice!" ideology. So there must be a shit show to make sure the USMC won't lose perfectly combat-ready marines to pregnancy. And here is where I only guess... But I do think most men are much more irrational, and more careless with their actions, if they see a woman suffering and dying. Compared to a man. So losing a female marine, in my opinion, conveys a higher chance of losing another wanting to provide impossible support.

[–]strapped_for_cash -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Ok. Here's the thing. I was a marine for 4 1/2 years and I call bullshit. There were so many shit male marines that couldn't do 3 pull ups and were fucking weak as shit. I would've taken a woman that could even try to fight. No shit, we made some of the pussy guys fight girls and they lost a bunch of times.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well then everyone should be held to that standard. Men and women alike, if you can't pass an appropriate test for the tasks at hand, perhaps you shouldn't be there.

And yea, some women can beat some men. But we're talking general statistics here.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

There's a part of me that believes the honest to god trigger pulling operators doing the mission right now will never see women because those units are able to be subjective about who gets recruited. The regular rank and file infantry units where they are actually getting in are doctrinally on their way out anyway and not much of an operational concern.

I'm all for MOS/AFSC specific physical fitness standards to just weed both men and women who can't hack it out.

[–]WickedTriggered 935 points936 points937 points 10 years ago (133 children) | Copy Link

Women in combat is all well and good but being able to drag a 185 pound guy to safety requires a bit more than a progressive attitude.

[–]Theeeantifeminist427 points 10 years ago* [recovered] (96 children) | Copy Link

I'm ex-army and my little brother is a SEAL. None of us, including his wife, have any appreciation for this equality when it's risking people's lives just so some entitled group can say they can do something too.

4 people died at national jamboree when I was there

[–]YellowBrickChode 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I was too young to remember if the jamboree I attended was national or not. It was really big and held at one of the beaches in Camp Pendleton. The winds and rain picked up the next morning and tents started flying. It was kind of dangerous but I don't think anyone died. What happened at your jamboree? Was it this one?

[–]seapilot 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Yup, that was it. My camp was like a few hundred yards away and when we heard the ambulances and sirens we all rushed over to see what happened. It was pretty unbelieveable at the time.

edit: yours was probably a state jamboree. The national ones are every 4 (maybe 5) years in the swamps of virginia in the middle of summer.

[–]Quteness 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The saddest part about that was that the company responsible for the deaths was only fined $5,600.

Did you forget the death march to the first arena show?

I swear the conversation in the planning meeting went like this:

"So, we're going to have everybody walk to the arena show in the afternoon"

"Right, naturally."

"And because of security they can only bring a one liter bottle of water, which they will have to surrender when they get there."

"uh, huh, but this is late July in Virginia, it's likely to reach about 100 degrees that day, some of the camps are at least 5 kilometers away and then you're going to have them sit in a field in the sun for an hour or two before anything actually starts happening. They're going to be in the sun the whole time."

"Yeah, but it's only going to be that bad for the Southern Region, they know how to deal with heat, they'll be fine."

"Nope, you're right. Good plan, let's do it."

[–]seapilot 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

lol no i remember that, trapse half way across the state, get there, wait for 3-4 hours then nothing happened. No president, no fireworks. I do remember the wierd skits that no one but the slow kid in our troop enjoyed. He fucking ate that shit up.

Yeah. Helicopters coming in to take people out; trying to hose the crowd down from the edges with military fire trucks. I will say, I was turning water bottles down on the walk back as I was trying to beat the storm.

[–]choikwa 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What happen to meritocracy? Having people with capabilities do things? Nothing else should matter.

[–]wasdninja 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Equality in this case is simply to be allowed to try out. If you can't hack it then nothing else matters and only insanely stupid people want to change the damn test to accomodate people who couldn't previously pass it for political brownie points.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And that's fine if they can't hack it as a Marine, the Air Force needs recruits to.

[–]bobaimee 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

It's not risking it if they can't qualify, the test weeds out those who can't.

[–]Theeeantifeminist0 points 10 years ago* [recovered] (5 children) | Copy Link

I'm talking about beyond the physical aspects here. They are also having to redo many of ways that deployments and training would be. Having a woman attached to your unit adds a whole list of things you have to change for their "safety and comfort."

A good example of this is how at basic training they won't use dirty cadences when marching if there are women present. It's ridiculous how much this is going to affect those who worked hardest.

[–]BracedPolecat 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Marine Corps has whats called a Pre-deployment Training Program which they estimate and asses a unit's deployment capability. Basically even if they lower the standards at bootcamp (which i don't think they will) the chances of deploying with the same standard is zero because they wont be the same.

[–]drfarren 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This may hold true if we only involve ourselves in small skirmishes. However if the US declares war, real war, those standards will go out the window because they will need every able bodied soilder on the battlefield. You can do a lot with missiles and push-button tech, but in the end you still have to have boots on the ground to hold your territories.

This means that even those who are not rated deployable will be sent somewhere but in their case, they will die.

[+]bobaimee -6 points-5 points-4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Wow, that is one of the most entitled things I've read. RIP dirty cadences, women ruin everything amirite?

[–]Theeeantifeminist2 points 10 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm more worried about soldiers having to worry about offending someone when they're risking their life. Not feeling like they can ever truly relax and "be with the guys" anymore.

If you don't get why this is a very very bad thing, I don't know how to help you

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In my time in uniform the women were often just as dirty minded and dirty mouthed as the men.

[–]Claystarfire 49 points50 points51 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think they meant if the standard you had to meet for the test was lowered so women would pass it more, it would risk lives.

[–]DeadlyLegion 16 points17 points18 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

deleted What is this?

[–]smookykins 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You mean the tests which have already been eased and then they were given special instruction and unlimited attempts to complete just so they could say that females were empowered and strong and independent and just as good but actually better than men?

[–]Ultimate_Failurerenown for his western grip handjobs 81 points82 points83 points 10 years ago (38 children) | Copy Link

Because men will always protect women, to the detriment of the mission. This is well documented.

The tests also don't account for women's far greater tendency to be injured than men of similar size/strength.

When they are captured and subjected to rape by the enemy, morale and resolve will crumble.

etc.

[–]Ultimate_Failurerenown for his western grip handjobs 15 points16 points17 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Basically, yes. That's how you get soldiers to run into machinegun fire. HTH.

[–]DerTrickIstZuAtmen 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Exactly, but it is not the truth. It is abusing that "protect" reflex.

[–]Ultimate_Failurerenown for his western grip handjobs 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Abusing, or exploiting to the nation's benefit?

If you want an effective military that is capable of heroically fighting wars and winning them, you can't have women on the front line.

If all your military ever needs to do is distribute Red Cross care packages, then by all means, let's have "equality".

[–]Hohenheim_of_Shadow 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sure, BUT us military support to live combat ratio is 10:1
so just tell those bitches to get back into the kitchen /s

[+][deleted] -11 points-10 points-9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

uhh then those idiots who are gonna put lives at risk so they can be a white knight with a gun are the ones that need to be barred from enlisting, not every single woman in the country. also every person who argues points like these seems to be living in some world where countries with successful militaries arent already letting women into combat roles.

Watch a video of a guy being pimp slapped. Ouch, you empathise but you're sure he'll walk it off.

Watch a video of a girl being pimp slapped. Dudes have an immediate visceral reaction. Their brows furrow and their mood changes. It's not "some men act this way", it's a biological reaction ingrained into half of our species to protect the other half that is weaker and bears children.

It's why Hillary can get away with saying mindbogglingly retarded shit like;

"Women have always been the primary victims of war. Women lose their husbands, their fathers, their sons in combat. Women often have to flee from the only homes they have ever known. Women are often the refugees from conflict and sometimes, more frequently in today’s warfare, victims. Women are often left with the responsibility, alone, of raising the children".

Oh yeah, the dude who got mowed down by a machine gun or had his legs blown off below the knee because he stepped on an IED. Fuck that guy. The dudes suffering from PTSD and can't ever reintegrate into civilian life? Fuck them too. The real victims of war are women.

Men protecting women and children is hardwired in at a biological level. It is not, as some dipshits would suggest, "social conditioning" and "institutionalised sexism". If you ever hear anyone utter those words, punch them in the teeth and disregard anything they uttered.

As for your experimental units, the USMC ended up concluding that on all their trials, all male units worked better than mixed or all female units. Also, out of two full platoons (100 female soldiers), only two made it to the end of a 3 month course. Two out of 100, that's literally a 2% pass rate with others being injured or physically unable to complete the tasks required.

So yeah, we could have women in ground combat roles, but why would we want to? And that's before you look at fraternisation between enlisted females and officers, females getting pregnant on tour, periods, lack of psychological strength under pressure or any number of other problems. Can you imagine if the Black Hawk in Black Hawk Down was crewed by females? It wouldn't have been a PoW film about guys holding out and being taken prisoner, it'd have been a fucking rape-fest. Why would you ever willingly send females into that kind of situation?

[–]serendippitydoo 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'd say that rape, beating and torture are relative and can all be as bad or worse to whomever is experiencing them. As for why we send men, we can hold them to a higher standard, train them better and make sure they pass the best tests we can make, and therefore trust in them not to get into those situatuons and if need be, get out of those situations. The conversation is about women not being able to pass those tests, so no they shouldn't be in ground combat roles if they can't pass the tests. Period.

[–]PlausibleBadAdvice 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Because they have been sent there for centuries. It is necessary to ensure the survival of "ours".

[–]_pulsar 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Rikoj 17 points18 points19 points 10 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

In a combat situation it's really just muscle memory, training, and instincts, men have and always will be protectors of women, not saying they need protected in today's world but throughout history women needed protection from men, either from animals or other men, it's something ingrained into our genetics, if we don't protect our only means to reproduce we will die as a species and back when we actually had that possibility of dying out that's what we did for so long that it's part of who men are.

We're raised being told to protect women, schools tell us to, religion tells us to, even women tell us to, it becomes engraved into our psyche. but when women today are mostly represented by man hating shrews who can't stop screaming I don't see this instinct lasting much longer. Do what your instincts say, do what your training says, and let your muscle memory kick in and allow you to fight back. I've never served but I've been in plenty of fights and I'm sure bunches of them could've gone south and left me dead, I'm just glad that the bunches I've lost haven't gotten me killed.

There are some studies that no matter the competence of a female SEAL or other special forces unit it caused their teams to perform less than entirely male teams. I don't have an exact link to the studies but from what I remember one of the suggested reasons was more that it was hard for the men and women to work as a team, and the men took risks to try to protect the females. Sometimes it's hard to get over a hard wired reaction in a panicked situation.

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points28 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

This reminds of that marine guy who was talking about how awkward it was when their unit was in a humvee for hours(With no stops because hostile territory), and they'd normally pull their dicks out and pee in a bottle and no one would care, but when there was a woman on the unit, guys would be uncomfortable, and the woman had to do her thing, in a humvee, in front of 5 other guys... and how that just fucks with your head in battlefield and you never really get close to your teammates, resulting in decreased team chemistry.

Say you have a beast of a man weighing 225 all muscle. Then he gets hurt and his buddy who weighs 200 pounds all muscle pulls him off the battle field into safety away from gun fire. No big deal right?

Say that same scenario happens but now you have a 150 pound all muscle (for the sake of argument) female pulling that 225 pound man to safety.. It's unsafe for everyone involved. I haven't even mentioned the extra 40-50 pounds of gear she'd have on (I'm being generous with that number) Now she has to keep her head on straight while providing aid.

Mentally and physically women and men are different. Men are designed to be hunters they can physically can carry pounds of gear and are designed to be out hunting the animals while women were at the huts raising children.

Men and women excel at different things and it is proven that men are better for combat. They showed a group of average men and a group of average women disturbing photos and videos that lasted 9 minutes. Then a month later the men and women were asked questions about the images and the men completely forgot about the images. The women could recall a lot of the gorey details and became very disturbed by this and got nightmares, some as soon as the first night. So mentally men can block out the nasty parts of war while women quickly can become disturbed by the things they'll see which will lower their effectiveness.

When looking at the mental and physical aspects women have no place in the front lines.

This is fascinating and often over looked. I have a good friend that has been powerlifting since high school. She is now in her early 30s. She is a monster 5'7 / 160ish who works out 3-4 times a week and is starting to get back into competition. Her biceps and quads are gigantic.

I always mess with her about her being so strong and it sorta irritates her. I'm an overweight largely unatheletic 35 year old dude who smokes and drinks and eats terribly. Long story short we got into it the other day playing around. I totally overpowered her in seconds multiple times. I was shocked to be honest.

I weighed 195 in PT gear at the time.

So it would be much more difficult than most realize.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Second this. I carried almost exactly a hundred pounds on patrol my first deployment. M16, a couple of frags, 11 mags, IFAK, 100 oz of water in a camelback, demo charges, flak, Kevlar, ESAPI plates. Shot adds up. For a while, I had to carry a SMAW with two rockets as well. Thank God our command eventually said no rockets in the city because carrying that on top of my regular load was ridiculous, and it caught on everything.

[–]FloppyTunaFish 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

How long could 11 mags be expected to last in an average firefight

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Long enough. SOP called for only 6 mags but almost everybody had 8-12.

It's insanely easy to dump a few mags just from initial contact in order to maneuver somewhere. Once you're settled you can slow down. Your base of fire comes from the belt feds. SAWS lay down the higher volume fire, but that means they go empty pretty fast. Most of our SAW gunners world carry about 5-700 rounds on belts. They'd start bumming your mags when they got low, so if you want the SAW to keep talking, you give up your extras

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Totally agree. If we are aiming for equality, women MUST be subject to EQUAL physical requirements. This attitude of "we are equals but you have to cut us some slack on the physical stuff" isn't helping anyone. There are men who don't meet the physical requirements of the armed services and there are women who don't. It's nobody's fault that the percentage of women who do not meet these requirements is higher.

[+]Niggius_Nog -19 points-18 points-17 points 10 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Nah, /u/femstora is right, some women are stronger than men even if they work out the same. There are strong girls and weak guys, there will be some overlap in strength, hence the test being used.

[–]FUCKGOTMODS 14 points15 points16 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Ceteris paribus . . . . No. That is just not how testosterone works.

A man and woman of equal size, consuming equally nutritus intakes, and receiving equal training will not progress at an equal rate. (i.e. men passively burn and consume more calories that women, don't believe me? go to any calorie website enter identical height and weight information and just change the gender . . . ) This is because men have a higher rate of basal metabolism than women.

This is even assuming that you keep the "nutritus" calorie intake equal not proportionally equal.

Testosterone gives men a huge advantage when it comes to developing and repairing muscle. Not to even mention some bone structure differences that give men the advantage in things like running and pushing/pressing objects (here is the wiki page listing a bunch of them.

Not even trying to circle jerk but everything you said is wrong on a basic scientific level. It is not to demean women or their ability to accomplish physically intensive tasks. But to say that their ability to develop, maintain, and repair muscle is equal? To say that their theoretical physical potential is the same? WTF? It is just blatantly wrong an unscientific.

[+]Niggius_Nog -11 points-10 points-9 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

When did I ever say they were equal? Some women are genetically stronger than men, that is all I'm saying. Give the genetically gifted woman and genetically inferior man the same workouts and the female will be stronger. There is overlap in strength, not all guys are stronger than all girls, hence the test.

[–]Jowitness 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

[+]Niggius_Nog -7 points-6 points-5 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

[–]Jowitness 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ok well shit it may be 1 in 2000 but that's still a number, nowhere did I include a statistic for you to try to contradict. I do go to the gym and see some huge women and some scrawny ass guys, even if it's extremely rare. Again, hence why there is a test and not simply, guys are ON AVERAGE stronger and faster therefore we only let in guys.

I've actually had to do that before. The guy who was shot weighed probably 170, but he was literally dead weight. Adding on the 80 lbs of gear he was carrying, you have to be able to get 250-300 lbs moved. Adding in the fact that you're carrying another 80 lbs of gear yourself, it's strenuous. Everyone that doesn't have health issues gets in to basic training, the same basic training. Even with all the physical free passes, only one of the 5 girls actually graduated, and she barely passed. Real feminists are bothered by this.

How can you feel proud of your accomplishments, knowing that the rules literally had to be changed just to give you a chance. How can you feel proud of what you do, knowing that people think so poorly of you and your abilities that they had to literally change the rules for you to have even the barest chance of success?

It's mind boggling.

Yeah I can definitely see how hard it would be to know that you were giving the easy route when your peers all maintain separate standards..that is a heavy burden to carry throughout your entire military career. Props to the women who are actually passing these new standards, though I still don't believe the new challenge remotely correlates to physical stress on the job for combat fields. Either way, I feel like this should serve as a precedent of change for any and all physically intensive military occupation regardless of branch.

[–]Never231 168 points169 points170 points 10 years ago (79 children) | Copy Link

Don't get how this is really PPD. The tests serve a purpose. Everybody knows that females are not as strong/fast as males. Shouldn't the ones that pass be allowed in? Isn't that the point of the test? This is just equality. Don't see anyone complaining about them failing.

[–]WinXP_MasterRace 182 points183 points184 points 10 years ago (74 children) | Copy Link

Because up until the new test was put in recently, woman were getting in with much, much lower baselines than men needed

For push-ups, a man's minimum standard (42) is the maximum for woman (42) and woman only need to get 19 to pass.

The pull up test was worse with 3 pull ups as a minimum for men. Woman needed only to hang on the bar for 15 seconds.

Gender equality is one thing, but if you are dangling over the edge of a building that just blew up, gravity doesn't care that you have tits, you need to be able to get yourself out of that situation. Just hanging there for 15 seconds will not do that for you.

Woman were given a pussy pass and this new test is revoking that, as shown by the 85% failure rate.

[–]loulan 62 points63 points64 points 10 years ago (43 children) | Copy Link

You only need to be able to do 42 push-ups and 3 pull-ups go get into the US army? TIL I'm much more fit than I thought.

[–]Jwkaoc 19 points20 points21 points 10 years ago (35 children) | Copy Link

That seems like such a huge gap. I can't do 42 push-ups, but I can do 3 pull-ups easily. Maybe it's got something to do with weight.

[–]loulan 26 points27 points28 points 10 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link

Not really. 42 push-ups really isn't much. 3 pull-ups can be hard for heavier people.

[–]RapingTheWilling 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

It's a fuckton of push-ups if they're the 3-second reps that they made us do in high school fitness tests. Those are hard. I dumbbell bench press a pair of 80lb weights, I can't do 42 push-ups at 3 second intervals.

[–]forsubbingonly 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

Why the fuck would you take three seconds to do a push up?

[–]haneybird12 points 10 years ago* [recovered] (6 children) | Copy Link

Because there is a time limit. The test for the Army is 42 within two minutes without breaking form. If you lift a hand, foot, or touch the ground with a knee you are done.

[–]forsubbingonly 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You still don't take three seconds to do a push up, you get what you need and plank out the rest of the time.

[–]Winged_Bull -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Seriously. In high school for PT team we had guys breaking 100 pushups in 2 minutes. All the way up, and you weren't "down" till you broke parallel. Same regulations as the ARMY about breaking form.

[–]InclusivePhitness 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

it's not chest to the floor right?

[–]haneybird11 points 10 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Chest can touch the floor but laying on the floor or bouncing is not allowed. Basically the rule is that if women's breasts graze the floor they are not penalized.

A "proper" push up for the Army is going down to a 90 degree angle at your elbow. This is lower than most people have ever done push ups to, which makes it harder than most people here that are saying they could do it think.

I'm sure that I can do 10 pull-ups easily, but I still can't do 42 push-ups without stopping. Different muscles.

I'm sure that I'd be able to get 42 if I worked at it for a few weeks, but high rep push-ups aren't going to happen without specifically working at it. I'd say that anything over 25 reps or so is "high rep" for people who work in ordinary gym rep ranges.

[–]PALMER13579 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]MCEngraver -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. I've always been able to do lots of push ups, but I've always struggled with pull ups.

[–]bsbbtnh -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was like 280lbs in prison and I'd do 20 push-ups every lock up (3 times a day). Proper form. Took me months to be able to work up to that, and a month in solitary of doing as many push ups I could do each hour on the hour.

When I was in cadets as a teen, I could pop out 40 push-ups no problem. But I couldn't do more than two pull-ups, even though I weighed 140lbs.

Push-ups are easy to build up, just by practicing each day. It's hard to work on pull-ups because you can't really do enough to start with to strengthen the right muscles and practice good form. It's much easier to work those muscles in a gym.

[–]ITworksGuys 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I went into the Navy in pretty good shape and couldn't do that many pushups in a row.

It just wasn't something I ever practiced. I would do them in sets of 10 or so.

When I left boot camp I could knock out 90 in a row or so.

[–]mrwack0o 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

It's been about 8 years for me but if I remember.. 42 push-ups, 2 miles in about 16m and 60 sit-ups were for the bare minimum 70% score to pass as a male, aged 18-21(22). The sit-ups and push-ups were timed, 2 minutes to knock em out.

Bare minimum for any soldier in the army at least, other branches had different tests/score weights.

You get a little extra run time for leeway as you age, but funny enough, you will have to do more push-ups for a higher score as you age also.

[–]SigO12 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not sure if he answered your question, but yes, everyone needs to pass, regardless of MOS. The push-ups at sit-ups required will decrease as you age.

What sucks is the requirements to get maximum points actually increase as you get older. That being said, you don't want to get the bare minimum as and NCO or officer. Even if you are strictly in a support role.

[–]WaWaCrAtEs 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]JustScribbles-2 points 10 years ago [recovered] (4 children) | Copy Link

I know quite a few women who could easily outdo the average man. When the push comes to shove, you'd rather have them fighting for you than the average joe. Does it take work? Yes. But the "average" man nowadays isn't even that strong if you think about it. Most people don't work out. Most people arent in shape.

If they pass the tests, let them fight for our country. There's a lot of people who sit and cower but won't fight for the US. They complain about Isis but won't get off the couch.

Bottom line: if you won't do it, or can't do it, don't complain about the person who can and will because of their gender.

[–]WinXP_MasterRace 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

That's the point though, none of these "strong woman" have passed the tests. Even with the training and dedication, woman are physiologically different to men and do not have the raw strength needed to be a combat soldier

[–]Ultimate_Failurerenown for his western grip handjobs -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Not true at all. The number of pullups you can do is heavily influenced by your body weight.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

While that is true i think you are vastly overestimating the effect bodyweight has.

10 pullups is easily achievable with any kind of workout program, which im hoping people going for these positions are in at least decent shape.

If your bodyweight is high enough that you can do 10 Phillips given 2 months warning, you shouldn't be in the military

[–]chronicmoocher 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

how is any of this even relevant, if they had no chance of a combat role. they weren't testing for the same jobs, so where was the pussy pass? new standards for new roles, makes sense to me

[–]WinXP_MasterRace 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Your score in the PT test also gives promotion points. It is much easier for a woman to get full points and therefore have a better chance of getting a limited promotion spot. By having a different standard, it directly impacts more than just the physical health of those in the military

[–]MrUnderhil 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not all men are in combat jobs. Both men and woman can have support jobs. So a man and woman can be the same age with the same job but the man is tested at a much higher standard.

[–]Skyrmir 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Honestly, the men's standard is low. I am old, fat, and out of shape, and could probably still pass that test. Granted I'd be shitting myself by the end of the running. Still, there's no way I should be anywhere near a combat zone with people relying on me.

[–]WinXP_MasterRace 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

If you think that about the men's standard, it makes the woman standard even worse

[–]Skyrmir 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And makes me wonder how bad are the recruits? When there's men failing a week test at the prime of their physical fitness, we're scraping the barrel.

[–]WinXP_MasterRace 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, men are failing at 2.2% rate whilst woman have an 85% failure rate so the men don't really have an issue with the test

[–]tothecatmobile 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Those are just the general military fitness tests though aren't they?

Its purpose isn't to show how well you can do a specific job, but simply a way to judge a persons fitness levels compared to the average person.

Its why the test gets easier as a person gets older too.

[–]MustakaThinks breakfast food is gay sex 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Men tend to be:

decisive, bold, confident and risk takers

Women tend to:

ask questions, be risk aware, seek conversations (May be good, may be bad) and be inclusive.

All of these strenghts have their up and down sides, whether or not they are all required or positive on the front lines can be discussed, but at the office, planning and structuring missions; women can outclass men easy.

Just to clarify, I DO think that men and women should go through the same tests and that they should have the same requirements when it comes to the army, because you actually need to do the stuff you say you can when it comes to it..

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

While I can see the (potential) validity in that, I've also heard that in real-world tests of this, it isn't necessarily true, and also, having women on the field can be a distraction for men because they tend to be overly protective of women, sometimes to the detriment of the mission.

As per what /u/Ultimate_Failure was getting at, is the investment worth the return when it comes to female troops? Would you pay company A to make 100 suits if only 15 of them came out right? Why not just pay company B, where 97 of the 100 are correct?

Edit: For clarity, I'm in favor of women in the military. I'm just making discussion.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Of course, but that is not what i was writing about. From the group that pass only 15% of the time, you wasted resources training and testing the other 85%. Its a big waste, compared to the 3%failure rate of the other group. There, the waste is minimal.

[–]LeGummyWorms 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

You know, if this businessman used the Minimum Variance Portfolio (MVP), which is the lowest amount of risk relative to the rate of return, he would actually include both "stocks" in his portfolio.

So no, a businessman would not invest 100% into the first group.

Edit: Assuming stock 2 also has some sort of high return as well.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I am no expert of economics, but stocks with higher "failure rates" also gives higher returns, right? In such a situation, it can make sense to buy both. That kind of reasoning though doesnt work with materials, that either works or not. Same with training people.

[–]LeGummyWorms 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Generally, any sane person would invest in the first one if the returns were the same. Diversifying just makes it so that you if it goes bad, you dont lose it all. Women in combat roles have their niche roles such as talking with muslim women, so the returns arent the same in this situation.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is actually a good point. Though, if that (or other with the same reasoning) is their "favoured role", then there is no need to train them as marines. Offer them roles into the military police.

[–]soicanbefree1 points 10 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

No he wouldn't.

Just passing a gateing test doesn't account for higher injury rates, lower individual performance, lowered group performance, and an investment in a second set of different facilities and equipment.

Pot, meet kettle.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fuck them for trying? No. A wasteful decision to let them try? Well.... yeah.

[–]bmoreoriginal 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nobody said that. Please calm down. If they meet the physical requirements, they're in; if not, they're out. That's all. Double standards have no place in a combat. It gets people killed.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

women in combat positions is like a child playing chicken with her parents with regards to doing something bad. she knows it's bad and she'll probably get hurt and her parents won't let her do it. she keeps acting like she wants to do it but deep down, she doesn't. so now the marines created a test that will keep women out of frontline combat roles so now they can keep saying it's due to sexism. based on how much women already complain, if they were to ever be in the front lines and come back, how much would we have to hear them cry about ptsd? they get ptsd from someone saying something to them apparently. what's going to happen if they get shot or see someone get blown up? the river of tears will never end.

[–]TheeeantifeministThe anti white knight white knight this sub needs 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The only positive thing from these gender warriors coming back with PTSD is it would force our society to finally do something to help people with it. Men won't get the help they need until women start suffering from it too, sadly.

[–]Shaelyr 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Can I ask why this is something to mock women about? At least they're trying, they want to serve. The 15% who pass will be good soldiers. And kudos to the ones who tried.

[–]johnchapel 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

The top 15 percent of the women are still statistically worse than the bottom 15 percent of men. Ya dig?

[–]Shaelyr -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

The "ya dig" bullshit. I didn't even care what the fuck you had to say because you immediately were an ass. And frankly, if all you have to contribute is that women are physically smaller than men, um, we all fucking know. That's why there are minimum standards.

[–]Goodis 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I have a friend in Sweden who was with the army for a year, he told me the girls, even though they passed the strength tests to join the army, sometimes couldn't handle the pressure and from time to time had the guys carry their backpacks for them, and in some rare cases even carry them.

In a real life threatening situation they would have been more of a danger than help for the squad.

[–]Eab543 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That 15 percent must be beasts.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In some ways I support this, in some ways I don't. I think a frontline combatant should meet these qualifications, but I think that there can be combat roles that aren't exactly front line.

Russian and Korean female snipers are pretty famous for getting the job done, but didn't need to be carrying hundreds of pounds of gear.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You guys have to be fucking kidding me. How is this "pussy pass denied" these women wanted an equal chance to serve their country, they attempted and failed. Simple as that.

We should be happy people of both genders want to serve the country and we are giving them equal chances.

[–]Kuftubby 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It takes 15-20 non-combat personnel to keep 1 combat personnel in action. To even suggest being in a non-combat role is somehow "lesser" is just ignorant.

[–]peterqub 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

When I was still in the Marines, most of the female Marines were against women in combat. Our way of looking at it was if you can do the job it doesn't matter what gender you were.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is the main point here, I think. It's not about keeping women out, it's about keeping incapable people out. If women happen to fall into that category, so be it.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Don't worry. They'll whine, bitch, and moan until women get easier physical and combat requirements. Then- they'll be the ones responsible for the deaths of their brothers and sisters in arms due to being unable to perform the job's required duties.

That's how it happens in other workplaces, but less extreme.

[–]smookykins 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, then, just lower the standards! That won't have an effect on the safety of troops and the effectiveness of combat operations at all!

[–]BracedPolecat 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I wouldn't say its a denied thing seeing how they been given the chance and they couldn't meet the standards required.

[–]Nickerdos 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thats 15% more female combat troops than we previously had in the Marines. I don't see the problem here...

[–]mcotter12 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Article fails to mention that six women have attempted the test, and 1 passed, or that this is the first time women have been eligible to attempt the test.

What I'm trying to say is it is a shit article.

[–]the_denizen 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The enemy's not going to shoot at you less because of your gender. By that token, training for females should be exactly as tough as the men's. Further, if you're a bonafide Valkyrie bitch and you want to be in the marines, you need to be willing to go beyond what is expected, to shatter those prejudices that are already in place. Yeah, I wish you didn't have to, but by doing so, you're one of the hardest women on earth. And, at risk of sounding like a pig, several men appreciate a woman who can kill them a dozen ways with their bare hands.

[+][deleted] -41 points-40 points-39 points 10 years ago* (26 children) | Copy Link

Dragging a 185lb pound isn't all the job demands, i honestly think woman should serve in combat (especially if there's a mandatory draft), but perhaps should be given roles such as field medic, sniper, maintenance, scouting, support, communications, etc. I'm also not against women getting more PT and more protein to catch them up. Man have the natural advantage in strength, no matter how many "independent woman" Beyoncé ballads come out. I have seen some women on Tinder put that they're US Army and look petite as fuck. I met one in Orlando in the service who was 5'2", 100lbs, and cute as all fuck. She was smart, funny, and with worldly experience, but I didn't want to imagine being dragged in to a Humvee by someone who doesn't even look like they can carry the 45lbs of equipment.

Edit: You can all suck a dick and die by ISIS's hands. I didn't say send tiny bitches to war and praise equality, I said throw them in the gym with steaks and beef them up before risking lives. All you liberal retards can't understand that. Downvote me, but I hope you all die repeatedly in CoD because known of you pansies served two tours like me. US Air Force for life.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points20 points 10 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Being a field medic or a sniper is (physically) harder than being a simple recruit. Have you seen the shit they go through in training?

[–]intarwebzWINNAR 21 points22 points23 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, he's basing his opinion off of what he knows from combat video games where only pussies play sniper and medic

[–]therussbus94 22 points23 points24 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This isn't a 10 year old's basketball team where one kid has to get a go on the court for the same amount of time as everyone else even though they are the worst in the team.

This is the military and life or death combat situations where everyone needs to be able to do the best they can and work as a team in order to stay alive. If one of those members can't work to the same standards as another then they are considered a liability and may end up being responsible for getting someone killed.

Serving in combat situations as a member of any military in the world requires a standard of physicality that the majority of women just don't possess and that's not being sexist, that's using statistics and fact.

This is about women serving on the frontlines in combat situations, not about support roles behind the combat lines, because many women already do.

[–]425Marine 20 points21 points22 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

If they can barely pass basic fitness tests how are they going to go to sniper school? I went thru sniper school and it is no joke. Your comment is senseless.

[–]MogetfogI shot my balls off. 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

there is a saying in the military. you are a rifleman first, and "insert your job here" second. every person needs to be able to, and know how to react in a combat scenario, that is why it is called basic training.

even in the last 50 years there have been situations where the cooks, the mechanics, the pencil pushers and even the toilet scrubbers have been handed a gun and told to hold the line during an attack. it is not very likely to happen, but it has happened before and will eventually happen again.

The requirements to be a scout sniper or in a recon unit are far more demanding than infantry. And so, you want to stick someone that can't pass the easiest test in the USMC in a unit with the hardest?

[–]TheTatCat213 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But... But... but in my video games, the snipers just sit in a tower with a rifle?! How much training can that possibly require?!

[–]blahhh87 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

In Singapore, we do 2 years of army constriction. The combat medics has to carry their infantry stuff (rifle, helmet, fieldpack etc) along with their medic stuff, stretcher and medic pack. The typical combat medic usually ends up looking like a overload mule.

As for recon and sniper, they have to pass navigation, do long distance route march (up to 72km for some units) and carry heavy load (easily 1.2x the weight of an average girl in SG) behind enemy line.

If a woman couldn't even be a good infantry soldier, please don't send her to recon, sniper or combat medic to be killed.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Fine, all service woman should be comfort woman from now on. We'll just ignore the part where I said they need to hit the gym before being deployed, because that would make too much sense. Fuck off and die in combat

All those roles can get engaged on the ground and take casualties.

The tesr they are talking about are the absolute bare minimum you need to maintain as an everyday soldier fighting a desk. Frontline soldiers train much more aggressively.
