How loose is their definition of sexual abuse to get 1 in 6?

[–]Family-Duty-Hodor 78 points79 points80 points 10 years ago (22 children) | Copy Link

My thoughts exactly.
I absolutely love that 1BlueString wants to raise awareness of men being sexually abused, but I highly doubt the accuracy of the 1 in 6 number. Is anyone familiar with that study and its methodology?

[–]Portaladdict1 112 points113 points114 points 10 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

This makes me so happy that people on this side of the argument are actually questioning the validity of statistics, even when they help their own agenda.

[–]The03k 41 points42 points43 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's what I love about this subreddit. I always save posts like this so I can link it to people who say /r/MensRights is an echo-chamber or somesuch like that.

I love you guys.

[–]evohans 14 points15 points16 points 10 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Well, to be fair, it hurts more when the other side attacks you for promoting false statistics. It's always better to check than to be made a fool.

[–]lunatictumor 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You would think. But radfems still spout their bullshit numbers. And they get repeated way up the line.

[–]Afrobean -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Who is this "other side" you're talking about? The faceless, anonymous people out there who are molesting young boys? Because that's the only enemy I see here in this case.

[–]WPKage 10 years ago* [recovered] (10 children) | Copy Link

Well, those people and also the people who pretend that those people either don't exist/can't be women/or are so few in number that it's not worth addressing.

[–]Afrobean -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

I don't think anyone would pretend that molesters don't exist, that no woman has ever molested anyone, or that there are so few people molesting boys that "it's not worth addressing". Are you building a strawman? I've certainly never met anyone like this, and if this sort of person did exist, I would say that THEY are so few in number that you needn't even address these rare fools.

[+]WPKage 10 years ago* [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

More like the news articles that pop up every week or so talking about middle age women raping teen/pre-teen boys were the situation is referred to as an "inappropriate relationship" or if they do make the leap to actually call it the crime it is they water it down in a manner that would never be done for a middle age man and a pre-teen girl.

Get back to me when it's finally the case that when a male child is raped he isn't forced to pay child support to his rapist under threat of a longer jail sentence than what his rapist got. Until then you're an example of the kind of person I was talking about.

[–]Afrobean 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes, people are always reluctant to use the word "rape" on "lesser" crimes that are also rape. It's the old "rape vs rape-rape" argument. Some people want to save the word "rape" for the rare instances of a prowler stalking and attacking someone they don't even know, rather than use it in all cases of non-consensual sexual contact. This problem is at the core of the idea behind what some people call "rape culture". For some reason people just can't understand the concept of consent, and in this case, it combines with the sexist idea that a male will always want to have sex and cannot be raped.

However, we're talking about children here, not teenagers, so you went off on a wild tangent there. You're right that what you're talking about can be a problem, but that's not the sort of problem that this topic is specifically about: child victims of all kinds of sexual abuse.

[–]WPKage1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

The problem is that the reluctance only comes from sexism. There are elements of the populous that are more than willing to call all sorts of things rape if the "victim" is female.

Also I said teen/pre-teen which covers children so I wasn't making a tangent I was just expanding it a bit.

The youngest one I remember reading about was 8 when he was raped and then when he turned 18 gov-agents sent him a bill for something like 34k and threatened him with jail if he didn't pay.

So that's at least one form of sexual abuse that not only is not condemned as it should be, but government agents are ready and willing to further victimize the survivors of.

I've been there plenty. Never saw anyone of the sort like that. I never even saw anyone say anything even remotely like that facetiously either. There was some misandry-as-humor (not unlike the popular misogynistic kitchen/sandwich jokes that pervade mainstream culture), but I never once saw any poster talk unsympathetically about a rape victim, regardless of gender identity. And I can't imagine they'd change their tune suddenly when the rape victim is a child.

[–]as_edgy_as_a_sphere 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Not that specifically, but the kind of ideology at Shit Reddit Says involves the idea that you cannot be sexist to men, cannot be racist to whites, and that entire world should revolve around LGBT rights. They hate this entire subreddit, so I'm just pointing out that they would not be so empathetic to a male rape victim as they would to a female rape victim.

Also in regards to the misandry and misogyny thing, I don't know where you live, but in my country misogynist jokes (even ironically) are highly frowned upon, and are is most other 1st world countries. So with that in mind, I don't really think misandry should be tolerated either.

[–]Afrobean1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I personally don't tolerate sexism of any kind either, but you're fooling yourself if you think sexist jokes aren't commonplace in popular culture.

ps your description of that subreddit is another strawman. A better description would be that it's a place where people get together to laugh about the worst hypocrisy, misogyny, and stupidity that they find, often from stupid MRAs but they're also often just racist crap. You might disagree about how stupid certain posts are, but that's their intent and that's what the subreddit is for: exposing the stupid shit that's posted on reddit. And again, you're fooling yourself if you think this subreddit is somehow free of rampant hypocrisy, misogyny, and stupidity. Almost every subreddit has a combination of those three things.

[–]mwobuddy 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Right, but I wonder how much of that is fudged. Remember, they're only extrapolating from numbers of people who report it.

They define it as "unwanted sexual contact."

The quote from the 1in6 page says:

"Researchers use “sexual abuse” to describe experiences in which children are subjected to unwanted sexual contact involving force, threats, or a large age difference between the child and the other person (which involves a big power differential and exploitation)."

[–]SrslyNotAnAltGuys 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

What about unwanted sexual contact from someone your own age?

'Cuz that'd include me in that statistic. That girl had problems, but still, I was not a willing participant.

[–]BizouBisou 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

According to /r/feminism you are a rapist.

[–]tennis19873 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Thai is included the definition.

[–]fuck-this-noise 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It says or a large age difference, not and.

[–]jb_trp 25 points26 points27 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. We can't fight truth with more lies and propaganda. Some children do experience abuse (neglect is by far the most common, then physical, then sexual), but it's still rare.

According to the American Humane Society, the highest rate of victimization is among children who are aged birth to 3 yrs, but only 1.6% of the children that age are abused. Only about 9% of children who are abused experience sexual abuse. There is no way 1/6 boys were sexually abused. I'd be interested in seeing where they got their statistics.

[–]kragshot 11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

How about looking on their website to answer that question for yourself.... "the 1-in-6-statistic"

[–]jb_trp 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

The main researcher cited for the 1/6 statistic is also a founding board member for 1in6, Inc. Interesting.

A problem with organizations like this (who are trying to help people and do good) is that they have an invested interest to make the problem sound as big as possible in order to get people to support them. For example, it doesn't sound convincing enough to say 0.1% of people get a certain disease, instead it sounds better to say 7,000,000 people have a disease because it sounds more. This can lead to a lot of misinformation and hysteria (i.e. the college rape "epidemic" is really rape hysteria).

[–]tennis19872 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Did you read the whole page? It references multiple studies that show the figure of 1 in 6 to be a good representation of reality.

[–]kragshot 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

So...your skepticism is rooted in the idea that one of the board members of 1in6 is also one of the researchers? That's like calling into question the motives of an oncologist who sits on the board of a cancer research foundation.

All foundations that support issues usually have people who are directly involved with the issue as directors. His research is probably what drove him to help found the organization. Those are very valid motives.

And regarding their reporting language; what are you looking for? That's how marketing for a "cause" works. Every charitable organization that campaigns for a cause does this.

Your skepticism isn't rooted in a solid foundation regarding this issue.

[–]jb_trp 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

My skepticism is based in the discrepancy in reporting. Some places say 1 in 6, some say 1 in 20, some say 1 in 100, and some say 1 in 3. Who do you believe? I've worked with children who have developmental disabilities for over a decade (a population of children who is at a higher risk for abuse). My experience says there is no way it's close to 1 in 6. No way.

Here's a PDF discussing the problem with estimating sexual abuse.

[–]mwobuddy 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't know as much about this as you, so its good thta someone with your insight can deal with people repeating fake stats.

[–]mind-strider 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You see this is what I love about this sub. We don't fall into the listen and believe trap that turns once noble movements into screaming hate mobs.

[–]kragshot -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And yet...what did you all just go and do?

Doing the research means just that...if anyone had taken the time to just follow up and go to the 1in6 website, they would have gotten all of these questions answered and seen the validity of this activism opportunity.

But instead, they just jumped on the nay-sayer bandwagon and declared it crap.

[–]FilthMonster 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Being critical of how statistics are determined is the smart move. Being wary of studies that have a board member as a researcher is the smart move. Critical thinking is essential to moving forward with facts that cannot be easily challenged. You go spouting off this statistic, get challenged and then telling the person to google it is exactly what the radfems do. Don't do what they do.

[–]mwobuddy 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The real problem with this kind of asshatery in reporting stats is that it churns the "sex/rape fear" machine in our culture, and everyone is a potential enemy or victim. That makes our society much more paranoid and less friendly than it should be.

"That which can be destroyed by the truth should be." -- P.C. Hodgell

It doesn't matter if its suddenly helping our cause, the more lies we allow to continue the further from justice we'll be.

[–]123xyz123xyz 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To all those who doubt this statistic, it is understandable. But we have a huge child abuse problem throughout the world. Please check out the Adverse childhood experiences study to see how bad it really is. Much of it is covered up or ignored.

If you spend any time around kids you can usually tell which ones are having a tough time at home, and the behavioral problems that show up are not rare. Think about criminality where you live. Where does that come from? We gotta up our standards as a society, and in this sub we all know how obviously bad behavior can fly under the radar.

I understand skepticism, but please do look into the statistics. It's really fucking heart breaking. More people need to be outraged.

Edit: added the link to the study.

[–]Senray 71 points72 points73 points 10 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

I don't buy this one in six any more than I buy one in four

[–]kragshot 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Is this because you don't support the data they listed or is this just a kneejerk reaction to the cooked stats that the feminist camp puts out about the campus rape statements?

[–]Senray -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I couldn't find any data listed

[–]NotRoosterTeeth 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Look at their page. Very legitimate definition. Basically unwanted sexual contact.

[–]modernbenoni 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

So, it includes somebody grabbing your ass?

I had a look on their site to see their sources but couldn't see anything but a video and lots of opportunities to buy things off them (on mobile).

It's a misleading statistic being used to sell a product.

[–]NotRoosterTeeth 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

So you think someone grabbing your ass in an unwanted, non joking manner isn't sexual contact?

[–]modernbenoni 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

No I think that it is sexual contact, which is why it would be flagged by that test.

I do not however think that it is sexual abuse. In the same way that the studies spawning the 1 in 4 statistic classed any sex where you're drunk or that you later regret as being rape. That is just twisting the truth.

Sexual abuse is a serious issue, but intentionally misleading statistics do not help the cause.

[–]mwobuddy -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

so football players that have their ass patted by a teammate is sexual contact? I mean, you're taking a non-sexual object of a human body and ascribing sexuality to it.

[–]EjaculationStorm 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The assumed context is in a sexual manner, not in a friendly way like football players do. You're taking the argument and making it into semantics.

[–]JetBlackSunrise -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

How is the ass not sexual?

[–]mwobuddy 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Are you kidding?

[+]JetBlackSunrise -7 points-6 points-5 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

No, I am not kidding. You're asserting that the ass is not sexual. I am calling bullshit on you. There are millions of queers who would call bullshit. I fuck my girlfriend in the ass probably a dozen times a week, and she would call bullshit. The porn industry would call bullshit. Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian, two fat-assed whores utterly and completely devoid of talent who have managed to be celebrities anyway because of their thats-not-a-moon-its-a-battle-station asses, would call bullshit. Tell me, how is the ass not sexual?

[–]mwobuddy 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Is your hand sexual because you "fuck" it in lieu of your non-existent girlfriend?

[–]modernbenoni2 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

No dude you got it wrong he has a smokin hot 9.5/10 girlfriend who he fucks in the ass a dozen times a week. You're obviously just jealous of his mad game bro

[–]mwobuddy2 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Lol, yup you're right. My bad.

[–]JetBlackSunrise-1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

It can be. Just like my very-existent girlfriend's ass. Sorry, kiddo, but just because neckbeards like yourself can't get a girl doesn't mean I can't.

[–]davidrexs1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

It may well be sexual contact, the problem comes when you include everyone under 18 who has had their ass fondled and children who have been severely abused. Such a stat tells you very little about the amount of children in serious danger.

When I was 15/16 I remember being groped at house parties, it hasn't had the long lasting effect I'd imagine stemming from sexual assault from an adult.

[–]augustfell 18 points19 points20 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Here's a site with some references. I'm not sure if it's associated with this company though. https://1in6.org/the-1-in-6-statistic/

[–]kragshot 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ah...you did the research...bravo.

The OP website is for an activism promotion by 1in6 US/Canada and Living well. The bottom of the main page provides graphic links to all three sites.

You, are spared my ire for having the foresight to at least attempt to follow up on the info before going off all half-cocked like everyone else here.

[–]Frosty09999998 20 points21 points22 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The 1 in 6 number is no better than other made up statistics. You can support something without lying.

[–]quwertie 56 points57 points58 points 10 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

What a crock of shit. We can support abuse victims without making up statistics.

Apparently not. It seems like any sort of movement lately has to be coupled with completely made up numbers.

[–]blamb211 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well, prepare yourself. Tomorrow is October, Susan G Komen is about to be fucking EVERYWHERE.

[–]rotten42 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm going to go re-string all of my guitars tomorrow out of protest.

[–]murderfack 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I just got to work or I'd do it myself but from the research they're citing, does it say what the population size for the survey was?

Besides the verbiage, a good sample size is usually the one thing that fucks over studies like these for any group of people, response bias can be a huge factor sometimes.

[–]quwertie 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't know. But that fraction is way too big to be honest.

[–]FeierInMeinHose 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

The statistics are true, the problem is that most of the population may be outside the scope of the study. They pulled from people receiving general health evaluations, and the mean age was 56, this calls their sampling into suspect. It doesn't seem random, and it's definitely not indicative of the entire US population, whose mean age is 37.

[–]quwertie 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

... which means the statistics are bullshit.

[–]FeierInMeinHose 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

No, it means that the person trying to apply them to things outside of their scope are trying to misinform people. Statistics aren't bullshit unless they're falsified or the conclusions drawn by the study are not supported by the data.

[–]quwertie 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I believe that disingenuous statistics are bullshit. I don't know how you think this statistic isn't bullshit.

[–]mwobuddy 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The statistic is true for the people it sampled. The intentional misleading shorthand description of the statistic misleads a general, ignorant public.

That's why its not a bullshit statistic.

[–]QuintusVS 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But it is bullshit to try and apply this statistics to all underage, and use the sensation to raise money.

[–]chowpa 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Damnit. My high e string snapped yesterday and I was hoping I could get a single string replacement.

It's low E. :/

[–]RussellLawliet 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, they're medium gauge too and I don't use medium. :/

[–]hurston 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]soyabstemio 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No

[–]timdesuyo 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This will not catch on. We are dudes. We aren't going to sacrifice the sweet sounds of our favorite string brand by adding a cheap unknown string into the mix.

[–]kragshot 17 points18 points19 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Did anyone actually go to the page and look to see where they got their statistic or did you all just decide to mob up on some old bullshit and sound "hip and aware" over misinformation that sounded cool at the moment?

If you go to the "1in6" website, right on the top of the page is a link that explains the statistic, titled...wait for it..."the 1-in-6-statistic"...nevermind. I'll link it right here.

I'm no math wiz, so don't ask me about crunching the numbers but they list their studies and provide references.

Yeah, I'm pissed as hell at all of you (at the time of my posting) about this because like you all said but seemed to just casually forgot at the exact same time; we are better than the other side and we promote facts rather than lies and propaganda. Guess what; they got facts on their page rather than lies and propaganda...CDC statistics, no less.

Why are we not supporting this initiative? The second biggest complaint about this sub is how we aren't involved in activism...well looky-looky...we get some real activism on a subject that we all allegedly back and the first thing we do is piss all over it.

You all deserve the "lead dildo" award for this entire, cocked-up, bonehead move today.

Did you read their study? It has many of the same issues as the "1 in 5 women are sexually assaulted" study. By the authors own admission: "The most controversial issues are how to define abuse, especially sexual abuse, and which definitions are applied to research data." The study that he links to as the case for the 1 in 6 stat includes "(3) attempt to have any type of sexual intercourse with you (oral, anal, or vaginal)." Attempt is a very vague word. If someone comes on to you, you say no, and they drop it there would you say you were sexually assaulted? Under this definition I think many would say yes but I don't think that is assault. We can't scoff at "unwanted kissing" and simultaneously go all in on "attempt to have sex." At least unwanted kissing implies that contact (the kiss) must have actually happened. He references various studies, the lowest rate is 2.8%, the highest 24%. (That I saw, I didn't read everything). 1 in 5 women used similar stats, definitions, and questions. I don't find this any more credible.

[–]jb_trp 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Exactly. If you do a quick google search there are many credible sources discussing abuse statistics. The statistics are all over the place, from 1 in 3, to 1 in 6, to 1 in 20, to 1 in 100. I really think this highlights the need for further research (not from charities who benefit from inflated statistics, but impartial researchers who want honest facts). I'd be skeptical that 1 in 6 kids face any kind of serious abuse.

[–]j0sefstylin 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm all for further research, but for further research.... Well, more awareness wouldn't hurt, whatsoever. I'd like more accurate research and awareness, so win/win depending on how you look at it. Even though coated strings do tend to sound like ass.

[–]captain_tenniele 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

If we promote questionable stats on male victims then we are no better than feminists that do the same for female victims. So we better be damn sure.

Considering that some of the more ridiculous feminazis consider looking at a woman's ass to be "sexual assault", I think men should be allowed to call it sexual assault if someone comes onto us.

[–]dallasdarling 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well the difference is the victims age. Any sexual innuendo directed at a child is inappropriate and potentially harmful.

[–]JetBlackSunrise -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed on your second sentence. But the feminazis don't make it age-dependent when they make ridiculous claims like "looking at a woman's ass is sexual assault".

[–]snarkymcthrowaway 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Coated strings sound like ass. No thanks.

[–]Bearmodulate 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Elixir Nanowebs are coated & they're some of the best sounding/long-lasting acoustic strings you can get.

[–]snarkymcthrowaway 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Acoustics are a different animal. The overall sound isn't as dependent on string material as it is with an electric. I've used Nanowebs on my acoustics before with decent results. I still prefer GHS White Bronze or Phosphor Bronze for them overall.

[–]Bearmodulate 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well yeah but you just dissed all coated strings, when 1bluestring offer an acoustic version as well

[–]snarkymcthrowaway 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fair enough.

[–]Glasgo 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This. Elixir sells two types of coating. The polywebs feel like coated strings while the nanos don't and still last a long time. Ive always liked how bright the sound stays over time with those.

[–]aynd 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

iirc, the polys coat the entire string, while the nanos coat the wind before its wrapped around the core

[–]RussellLawliet 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah... medium gauge is all they have but the rest of my strings aren't medium gauge, so...

[–]snarkymcthrowaway 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Also a deal-breaker.

[–]genxrp 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

This. No legit musician would do this

[–]kragshot -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Why?

Tomorrow, there is going to be pink all over the damn place. On your television show, your football fields, your concerts...you name it, and Susan B. Komen is going to be all over that shit.

Why shouldn't a movement that does something for boys get some of that popularity and awareness money?

Shit like this is why the MHRM isn't going anywhere....

[–]riker89 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To put it simply, string materials matter. Having 1 string coated and the rest non would vibrate differently and significantly change the sound. Plus, on electric guitars coated strings produce inferior sound.

[–]MizterUltimaman 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's not about the colour of the strings. It's about the composition.

[–]stopyourBull -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

because this is not the MRA this is we can talk about male issues as long as we don't hurt the feelings of feminist and women. hell most of the time feminist come here just to argue. we are not aloud to disagree with special men in this group. anything that benefits only men is seen as problematic because women( what ever they want to put here )

[–]andlight91 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So a group went out of their way to get statistics, and find studies about this figure, yet still the Most vocal people in this subreddit still piss on it....EVEN THOUGH IT'S ABOUT MEN.

Do you not see the problem with this. This is why no one takes the MRM seriously, you guys at the top are sitting around pissing over a charity that is literally doing ACTIVISM FOR MEN.

Just because it is about men does not mean it is correct or that we should just blindly go with it. I am skeptical of this for the same reasons that I was skeptical of the 1 in 5 college girls are raped stat. While I am no expert, reading the information provided by the site this seems to have the same type of issues.

[–]jcoe 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

As a man who was raped when I was a kid, this is fantastic. However, I'm not sure how well it will go over in today's society -- which is simply saddening.

Edit: After reading some of the comments, I find people are focusing on the statistic more than the awareness. We should be fighting against ALL sexual abuse...

[–]MeyRights 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If you fight with lies all you earn is everything but justice. We have to stick to the truth.

[–]jcoe 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They should have just left the statistic out of it in my opinion. It's totally irrelevant.

[–]Jacobtk 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Some of the comments here make think a few regulars may be feminist trolls. The upcoming alone is questionable.

As for the 1 in 6 rate, researchers have found it in dozens of studies since 1996. It is highly unlikely the number, which counts all unwanted sexual contact, is false. I would ask people to use a little sense, and perhaps stop falling into feminist traps. The number is legitimate, as is the concern for boys.

[–]mindscrambler26 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Quick, there are only 5 open spots left for other causes to pressure people to have certain color guitar strings, then there's no more room for any more causes or colors

Finally we have an innovative and marketable concept to draw attention to male sexual abuse and everyone shits on it. Well done.

The 1 in 6 website has a page that explains the data behind the claim. Yes, prevalence of sexual assault is notoriously difficult to measure. Yes, the definitions can be broad. But the organisation has provided study data published in high impact factor journals and other reputable publications. When we are dealing with human experiences of this nature, expect results to vary. Do not sit around waiting for some magical perfect figure of sexual abuse prevalence. While you're waiting for that, another boy or girl is abused because the awareness campaign "wasn't good enough".

Just because there is variation in the data doesn't mean all of it is shit, and it doesn't give us the go-ahead to abandon the campaign.

Fucking disappointing.

[–]rackmountrambo 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You're obviously not a musician. What if it was a campaign where you could buy one blue tire for your car? Would you spend five times the price to obtain a chinese shitty tire that was a different size than the rest? Now you might understand where guitarists are coming from. We're down right religious about strings and picks. Thats the problem i see here.

[–]tennis19871 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I see your point, but whether or not professional musicians will be satisfied with the quality of the product wasn't really what I was getting at. I do actually play, have done for 15 years, and I will buy this product because it's a conversation starter when friends come over.

The campaign has to start somewhere. Product Red wasn't launched from an Apple lab.

[–]Collin_C 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'm cool with supporting this kind of thing even with that sketchy number, but not at the expense of my carefully chosen strings. And this looks so ghetto and nasty on most guitars.

[–]RussellLawliet 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

They're coated strings too. Yuck.

[–]Collin_C 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Herelam -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Meh, the statistics may be made up but the cause is still good. I urge DoctorRandomerCam to do this with his guitar as well as for A Voice For Men to push this cause on their website.

[–]MeyRights 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
