35M, I was with her (31F) for 7 years in total, 4 of those years were married. I feel like I didn’t really know what I was doing going into it. We didn’t really have a plan. But we were each other’s first serious relationship.

We moved in together 2 months after we met, and I feel like I proposed more so out of pressure from family and less because I was passionate about actually getting married.

I feel like the initial rush of certain milestones definitely did charge things up and make it exciting at first…(sexually speaking I was her first, she was the first girl I had ever introduced to my family and vice versa, we moved in together, etc…)

But over time…I came to realize there were a number of things I didn’t like about her. I tried to change her, which I regret deeply, but ultimately I feel like it was because I wanted things from her that she didn’t want herself. And then she resented me, rightfully so, for wanting to change her.

I don’t know if I can see myself getting married again, but I do want to date (it’s been a week since we divorced and have our own living arrangements. While it was amicable, we agreed to go no contact).

I have come to learn that there are things that I need from a partner that are not negotiable in the long run. And while I know people change, I don’t know if I will ever find someone that really checks all those boxes… (caring about physical fitness, nerdy/gamer, likes music, things of that nature…) Communication is also very important, it made things utterly miserable for like the entirety of our marriage…

But yeah, I learned that I can’t handle being with someone long term again if we don’t have those shared interests. I also don’t want sex to cloud my vision again from making rational choices…

What did you all learn from divorce?
