I don’t know if this is in the US, but in the US there is this weird sort of attitude that a lot of people have that’s like it’s fine or even funny to be unhygienic.
Like, before COVID I saw a bunch of people (women and men) tweeting about how if they’re in their own house they don’t wash their hands after urinating. It was disgusting.
And now a lot of people are refusing to wear masks, which in my mind is a hygiene as well as a safety issue. It’s just frustrating and gross and selfish.

I’m in the U.S. I have heard from men who use public restrooms that before COVID, most men (or like 50%) didn’t wash their hands after peeing.
I get that they don’t wipe, but Jesus. You still have to flush! Who knows what’s on that?
I have seen/heard women not wash her hands before, but it’s rare and like something I remember and tell people about since it’s so rare.
I can’t speak for how people behave when alone, but yeah, that’s only “cute” on the internet.

I spent a few years cleaning restaurants in my teens and early 20s to fit around my studies. I can tell you unequivocally that what you say is true. Very rarely did I need to top up hand soap or toilet tissue in the men's toilets. I had to top up toilet tissue and hand soap every single day in the women's toilets. I've heard the same from several other cleaners. My next door neighbour cleans in a care home and at a hospital.
