By making it safe for her to tell you what's really going on. Don't pull the "I would never put up with that!" judgment and related ideas. Don't have expectations for what she should do. Just getting real is a very big first step. A lot of people, when someone shares abuse and they don't leave, eventually they start thinking "well then, she wasn't serious, if it was all that she would have left", isolating the woman further. Many times a woman will face a vicious cycle of being too ashamed to state exactly what's been done to her, then not being taken seriously. Don't pry, but generally assume it's more than she's telling. I heard a religious leader who works on this say that your general assumption should be that the first revelation of substantially abusive behavior is 15-20% of what's really going on. Above all you really have to examine yourself for any hint of victim-blaming because in their shame, isolation, and traumatized hyper-vigilance they KNOW you are thinking it, so you become unsafe to talk to. You can't run around solving people's lives for them but you can hold space for them to be real.

Yep! Even in my most pick me days, deep down I wanted it to be different and just needed the validation from somewhere and someone for me to feel like I could do better. I never would have justified it. I used to talk about how all men watch porn, go to strippers, cheat, need praise for doing some chores because I WANTED someone to say girl, NO! Expect and demand more. But unfortunately I didn’t have anyone back then.
I get we all have our phases and need help and validation (heck knows I’m still striving to completely ditch all my pick me ways). But Women who defend this shit and act like being a pick me is ideal - no excuse, sorry. But I do understand Stockholm syndrome is fucked
