I'm with you! It's actually very misogynistic that our marital status has to be known but not a man's. I'm 35 and my letters are still addressed as Miss, so are my mother's and she is 55. I'm from England. I always thought Ms was just for divorced women or women who didn't want their marital status known. We should be allowed to have it ambiguous like men have it.

It's stupid There's a difference in titles for women but not for men. The miss and ms one really makes me want to barf. Why do they need to see on document if you lost your value or not (since so many scrotes say women lose their value after a certain age) it's pathetic. Can we just not all be Ms? Who gives a shit if you're married, young, middle-aged, old.

I've never been married but I used to get weirdly offended whenever I was addressed as "Miss" instead of "Ms." For some reason it felt infantilizing to me. But now it's "Dr." so problem solved (jk, I still get called Ms or Miss... 🙄).

This is totally NOT petty! You do not need to apologize for wanting to be addressed properly. I would correct each and every time making sure that you are known as Ms. Like others in this thread, I have a doctorate and insist on being referred to as "Dr." in a professional setting. You would not believe how many male students attempt to address me as Miss or Mrs. I shut that right down on the spot (oh, and incidentally, all my female students refer to me as Dr. Never had a problem with them).

Where I work, which leans just slightly toward more women, everyone uses Ms. just to avoid that bs. I like it. There's never any correcting someone awkwardly. It erases that need to be defined by age or men. I wish everywhere would adopt the practice.

It seems like most US companies have dropped the honorific when addressing mail. In spoken language, I've always introduced myself as Ms when I'm teaching kids. At every place I've worked with just adults in the last 20 years we simply addressed each other by our first names. I'm in a conservative area of the southern US & even here it isn't common to make a distinction. Few people even use honorifics when speaking. The unwritten protocol is: person addressing you is younger or equal in age, they will call you ma'am or sir. Woman older than you will use honey or sweetheart to address either gender. Man older than you will use Miss or ma'am for women & Son for men.

I suspect the whole Mrs/Miss/Ms thing will all but die out in the next 20 years.

Eta: older southern women will also use Boy in a non-derogatory way: e.g. "The younger Harris boy stopped to fix my flat tire today." Interestingly, these women seem to be woke about avoiding the use of boy when referring to an African-American adult male. Only times I've heard boy used as a racial insult it's been by men.

Although it does remind me; recently there was a news article about 5 scientists working on COVID-19 research in Canada that only addressed the three men on the team as Dr and conveniently left out the two women who were addressed as “Ms” despite having PhDs! Same as the men on the team.

I've always had it default as Ms. even from when I was in my early 20s. Miss is like for little girls to me. I do have my students/colleagues refer to me by my first name though but that's a personal preference.

My mother has spent the majority of her life being referred to as "Mrs [my dad's first and last names ]". I think she loves being able to say "actually, it's Dr [her name]" now.

I still go by miss, but only because I hate Ms. I also grew up thinking that it meant divorced. It's ridiculous enough that we're supposed to change our names when we get married, nevermind that we also have to have a title which indicates to complete strangers whether or not we're taken. And miss Vs ms being used for older women is garbage. We don't exist to be categorised. In British schools, there's also the whole "sir" for male teachers and "miss" for female teachers. We need the equivalent of Sensei or something.

I've been using Ms. since after my divorce 7 years ago, then again I am over 30, so Miss felt too 'young' on me to revert to.

Men always get to be Mr. No matter the age and the marriage status... For women to get the same nondiscriminatory title SOME of the time (Dr. isn’t bullet proof) they have to have a doctorate compared to the scrote that can barely spell or wipe his ass.

This is the fucking world we live in. And these Srotes are still getting the higher paid jobs, even while the world watches in astonishment how they are dumb and getting dumber compared to women.

Studies clearly show that hours of porn use, video games, other addictions (men seem to be more vulnerable to these for some reason) reduce gray matter in the prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain responsible for rational decision making.

At this point Mr. Will soon start making people think what’s wrong with this ones brain. As for the Miss whatever crap I find it archaic and I hope we rise up and unite to change this sexist part of language so that it’s absolutely illegal to refer to it with Social, financial and legal consequences.

*Edit: in fact, the next time I encounter this, I am going to bring this up to the person asking. I will call them out unapologetically and emphasize that just because sexist language exist it does not mean we should be using it. That they should use their critical thinking skills and aim no not expose women to more oppression. What right do they have to evaluate me based on marital status or age and categorize me? In my particular case, if they absolutely insist They must call me something they can indeed call me Dr. and then I will ask them their credentials to compare to mine in the next sentence, and ask what their marriage status and age is, and whether their wife is smarter and more educated.*

Just because language exists doesn’t mean we should still be using and perpetuating it. Spread the word. Call them out. Show how they lack critical thinking skills. Make them so embarrassed they never dare do it to the next woman.

Can you change your signature and just be forcefully adamant from now on not to go by Miss or Ms anymore, but by "Your Highness Unholyalliance" or "The Great UnholyAlliance"?

That could simply be shortened to "Your Highness" or "Great Unholyness" or maybe just "Fierce Queen"?

I've never heard about anything changing at age 30, I always thought it made sense to use Ms for any unmarried woman. Or for any woman who wants to use it, it used to be popular for even married women to use Ms, at least professionally.

Ms has kind of fallen by the wayside but not totally forgotten. I think women should start using it again!

I went on a rant about this on Twitter and it resulted in adding the prefix "Mr." to my handle. I don't care what you think, world, it's Mr. Queen Fuuckyeahgiraffes to you.
