Sometime it seems to me that half of the male population is invisible. I.e. the least successfull half. From the homeless in the street to the the janitor or the early retired (aka unemployed) blue collar worker.

Then, because that half is invisible, obviously all the visible men seems like they’re way better off than the average woman.

Obviously that must be privilege.

i just don’t care anymore personally. women are half the planet, dominate unis now etc. feminism is massive. male privileges, women being great…its been done. i’m putting 100% into supporting men now.

What privileges does a man have that are not a result of his strength, assertiveness, attractiveness, social intelligence, leadership skills, money, ... but directly his being male?

For example, sure, men do earn more money on average, but that does not mean they can spend more money, and they also sacrifice their time, health, and work-life balance. There is a lot of evidence supporting the view that heterosexual men earn relatively more money to attract women (because that's what women want in a partner).

To some people, this question might seem offensive, but really, please try to answer it. There is a lot of data on supposed privileges that men have, and surprisingly it often turns out the reverse is true (i.e., women, and not men, being the privileged ones).

Firstly, it depends on what you are talking about. Being taller or stronger is obviously related to being male, not masculinity.

Secondly, 'privileges' aren't always beneficial. Being seen as agentic is good for politicians/leaders, but bad when a man is victimised or suffering.

I think understand what you're question is about. You're trying to determine if male privilege is really systemic, in that society confers privileges onto men for the sole reason that they are men, or is it that men, being different from women, do things differently which in turn earns them privileges.

I'm currently inclined to disagree with both interpretations. The idea that men are systemically privileged is leftwing misandrist propaganda. The idea that men are privileged because they do things differently to earn themselves these privileges is misandrist tradcon propaganda.

I don't have much to support my current position. But, regardless, I currently believe that men are, generally speaking, not privileged at all in any meaningful way.

Yes, men are usually physically stronger, but then they need to eat more and are often expected to do more physically demanding tasks without additional compensation. In modern society the added physical strength doesn't earn you much, in fact it often counts against you in many legal situations.

Men are over represented in positions of authority. But authority is not the same as power. Positions of authority come with a ton of stress and an inordinate level of commitment and responsibility. In less corrupt environment/societies, positions of authority don't confer much or any additional power while the additional level of scrutiny can in fact reduce freedom. In more corrupt environments/societies, positions of authority do give you more power, but it exposes you to the most vile elements of humanity and can actually be very dangerous to your life.

Men earn, on average, more money than women. But women, on average, spend more money than men and work less than men. From that perspective, overall, men's additional earnings isn't evidence of privilege, it's evidence of a form of servitude.

The fundamental problem with the concept of privilege is that it is very abstract and subject to interpretation on things that are nearly impossible to properly ascertain using thorough scientific methods. You end up having to justify your claims using ideology, and you can often come to any conclusion you want when you start using ideology.

But when misandrist ideology starts overtaking common discourse it becomes imperative that we build opposing ideology to counter it.

Like many in other comments, I would object to the term "privileges" (even in quotation marks). The preponderance of the male gender in key areas (politics, arts, science...) is a real phenomenon, but I wouldn't call it a "privilege men often have": to the vast majority of men who ever lived, sharing the same gender as the ruling class was absolutely of no use.

That aside, I think that the "status as a male" has been without doubt the predominant factor in the historical preponderance of men. If you were son of a king you would become king. If you were the son of a rich merchant you were expected to get in business. To affirm your masculinity was sometimes still required in order to "prove" your worth, but it's not as important. If you were the daughter of a man of power, aside rare exceptions, you were simply not supposed to follow the same career as him, even if you were a "masculine" woman.

The bottom line is that the gender we are born with subjects us to a mountain of expectations which we are supposed to respect, with no regards whatsoever for our actual nature and desires.

Look at boxing. The top people make a lot but the journeymen take a lot of damage…. That kind of tournament reward system is all over the place in male hierarchy. Winner takes all. Women hierarchy tends to be more equitable. So of course in the two systems some men will be more successful than women but it sucks for the men who aren’t at the top

Probably masculinity- more masculine and confident guys can get away with lots of stuff, especially with socializing, dating and sex that less attractive or skilled or confident guys can’t

It's hard to make a statement on such a broad generalization but generally I think yes. Given the competitive nature of any numerically limited position masculine traits will give you an edge though that's not the whole of it. It makes it even harder just how pointless masculine and feminine categorizations are. Extraversion, agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness, and neuroticism being the 5 fundamental psychological traits would paint a clearer, more accurate picture when compared to the distributions relative to the 2 sexes.

I’m a big, somewhat scary looking white dude. (Actually a cream puff though.) The biggest privilege for me is that my size and demeanor means I can go lots and lots of places even alone and nobody questions me or picks on me. It is a HUGE privilege. And I have to act a little tough, because if I derp too much, people will try to prey on me. It’s all masculinity. The male part is a liability. The masculinity is what gives us privilege. It’s all the projected fears and insecurities and stories in the heads of people who I interact with that make it relatively safe for me to wander the world.

Because masculinity is tied to traits like assertiveness . I would say masculinity.

If the job is a physical one and a boss hires a muscular woman over a skinny man, again. This is a case of masculinity being the great equalizer because muscular strength is tied to masculinity.

I don’t know a single boss that hires solely because you are a male. There are so many different types of males these days that hiring based on it would be just bad for business.

Men have privilege in the sense they are allowed to be bossy and take control of their lives. When women practice any type of autonomy, it is frowned upon in society.

Privilage is defined by being treated according to a group identity rather than by who you are. Masculinity is defined by the average personality traits of men. Ergo the general bias towards men is defined by masculinity. So masculinity privilege?

What privileges exactly do you mean? Maybe there were some before 1970. The fact that there are more men in high positions can as well be caused by more natural ambition. And I doubt if people at the top are happier (which of course is no reason not to strife after a more equal society, on the contrary, but equality IMHO doesn't mean 'equal percentages of 'marginalized' groups').
