I will just throw in some talking points, let's see where it will lead.

This September PETA called for a sex strike against men, making an absurd claim that men produce 41% more climate emissions than women because they eat more meat. One could dismiss it, arguing that PETA is batshit crazy and morally bankrupt, but PETA is still (probably) the most influential animal welfare organisation in the world with 1M Twitter followers.

A napkin calculation: 2021 study estimates that meat production causes 20% of greenhouse gasses. If men were to produce 41% more greenhouse gasses than women because of higher meet production, men would have to consume 118% of all meat. Which is obviously absurd, even if men need 25% more calories per day than women. PETA probably misinterpreted the results of whatever study they quoted but forgot to link. PS: Somebody please check my math.

Next, The Vegan Society quotes studies saying meat consumption is generally associated with masculinity while veganism is feminine, from which there is only a small step to toxic masculinity and oppression of women, of course.

Next, Vegan/gender statistics on the internet are confusing. BBC 2020 article claims:

This McDonald’s advert, broadcast in China in 2012, relies on the well-trodden stereotype that meat is masculine. And oddly, there is actually some truth to this. It turns out that – in almost every part of the globe, from Sweden to Australia – there are significantly fewer male vegans and vegetarians. In the US, one survey of 11,000 people found that just 24% of vegans are men.

But 2022 UK census shows that 5% more men than women are vegans in the UK.

And 2019-21 survey in India shows that 23% of women and 15% of men never consume chicken, fish, or meat, which translated to 40% of vegetarians being men.

Do you know of other interesting statistics or studies? What do you think of meat consumption and its association with masculinity?
