I think it’s telling of the type of privilege women receive through life that they think this is only an issue they have. In reality men are far more likely to be assaulted by a stranger in the street.

Men aren’t going to get a free ride to make sure they get some place safe.

I've been taking walks the past two months to help lose weight. I've lost about 15lbs so far! However, one thing that I've noticed (I'm a black male) is how many times I see women blocks away from me walk towards me but then turn the other direction.

As a man, I get it. But as a black man I can't help but couple this together with it. I'm not really gonna complain but then again I hear people bring up statistics on male violence and how this is why they avoid men. I then think, "well statistically it's mainly us black men doing it." I can attest to that fact myself unfortunately. "Eighty percent of the crime, ten percent of the population," right? It's just that the idea of bringing up statistics to avoid a demographic stops at anyone who isn't white.

Honestly, If you wanna avoid men, just avoid me.

Like I get people walking behind you at night to some extent but it’s not a gender exclusive thing. I’m also scared of someone following me at night & harming me, you could even argue men statistically have more to be scared of in that situation.

Then again the fact that she put “in public” makes me wonder what she would classify as being followed or if she is simply misinterpreting someone genuinely walking there without even intending anything toward her.

I feel like this is another ‘men are all harmful and bad even if they’re just walking’ paranoia thing that we saw last year with the Everard stuff (that poor woman’s tragic death was hijacked by misandrists)- what I find odd here though is the man’s response on the second slide who seems to be in agreement that men are dangerous. It strikes me as somewhat odd- I wonder how much longer this men are dangerous mindset will be commonplace for?

But seriously, I get it, dark street, one person behind the other (happens to men too, not just women), it can be a little unnerving. But we men are more likely to get harmed this way, and yet we're told we "don't know what it's like" and we "don't understand".

That's horsecrap, and if you're going to disregard how I feel, why shouldn't I disregard how you feel? Especially when you're considerably less likely to find that I'm some woman-hating rapist than I am to find the guy behind me is going to beat me to death for my watch and my wallet or because he thought I looked at his girlfriend in the pub earlier?

I also resent being considered a likely criminal, just because I have a dick.

personally i get freaked out whenever i’m walking at night and i someone else is uncomfortably close, so i’d say that people in general shouldn’t do that, i don’t know why they specify men. like i’m not gonna say “oh i think that guys following me” “wait it’s a woman? nvm lmao, it’s all good”

I’m a big, tall guy, and sometimes people who don’t know me find me intimidating or even threatening. Hence, especially at night, I am careful to keep my distance from solo strangers of all genders, to avoid causing unnecessary fear.

This has been my practice for many years, since I was a teenager.

So she says it would be safer if men avoided women at all. Why are people like her so mortified by MGTOW then?

First "it's safer when men don't go near women", but when men actually agree to avoid women, just like they asked, then surprised Pikachu face, men are somehow doing it wrong and must come back to women again (didn't they say it's dangerous when men are near women? how is it suddenly dangerous to NOT be near?).

As a gay man and an unironic gynophobe, if I find there's a woman walking behind me, I simply wouldn't feel completely safe and comfortable (I hope she will be understanding and not sexist, make her presence known and call her Dad), I'd prefer not walking on the same street, talking to, or having anything to do with, if possible. Seemingly, it's an ideal solution, but I doubt the idea doesn't piss them off

Eh. It bugs me, but I still do the coughing thing, cross the street to avoid women, etc. I think we can point out how this fits within a broader pattern of dehumanizing men, but I've lost the energy I once had to focus on these sorts of issues, except where they manifest in a specific incident where a man's life, livelihood or reputation is on the line. Otherwise, when I'm out at night and see a woman in my path, I focus on the fact that crossing/coughing makes women more comfortable/happy and I turn off the part of my brain that processes all the damaging implications.

If I've been behind a woman on the sidewalk for an extended period and especially if she's on the same path as mine then I'll drag a bit and get a bit of distance rather than close in on her.

This kinda backfired one night though as I walked home from a bar and ended up tailing a woman who had recently moved into my building. She was almost shaking when I got to the lobby and there she was. I smiled and introduced myself and then let her have the elevator to herself.

Sadly, its not like we can simply try to relieve the tension by saying hello so she knows we aren't a stalker.

I remember one time in college where I was walking to my car from class and it was a dusky evening (not even full night yet). There was a woman with whom I'd talked before--we shared the class and were on first name basis--walking ahead of me. I called her name from behind and politely asked if she minded if I walked with her since it seemed like our cars were in the same place. She said yes but it was immediately obvious she was wanted me to leave her alone and had only agreed so as not to risk pissing me off. I decided to play along because if I hung back she'd probably have worried I was going to stalk her, so better to stay in her line of sight and let her think I didn't notice that, right?

Well anyway, it didn't work. She never talked to me again.

The irony is that the whole exchange was a lot scarier for me than it was for her, because I was the potential threat. What do people do with threats? Eliminate them. Not to mention the chilling thought that, if that was how someone who actually knew me reacted, how would a stranger react?

Looking back, I think that incident was one of my major scars that damaged my ability to have faith in women.

Most stupid thing I've read all week. Just like women don't have dress conservative to avoid arousing men, men don't have act in a special way to make women not feel weird when simply walking.

It's kinda ironic that these women have been complaining about men controlling their lives, and now they try controlling how a man takes a fucking walk...

Oh and if a man is walking faster than you, and thereby getting closer. DONT WALK FASTER. You just make it harder for men to pass you and make the situation longer then necessary. Walk normal or run, you solve nothing by powerwalking

Not only do I already know this. I change my route if a woman is walking in the same direction as myself. It's annoying to have to constantly think about my presence as a threat.

As a black dude, there's another layer of bullshit but unfortunately, I would rather women to be paranoid than naïve. Them being scared of me doesn't affect me, they will look stupid to me and they will feel stupid once home alive.
