Sort of what happened to my dad. He absolutely loved the early years of our family and absolutely hated years 10 thru 30. My brother, sister and I put him thru hell and he withdrew into his work to avoid us and my menopausal, neurotic mother. After I was about 12 years old I never saw him except briefly in the evenings when he would get home late, eat and then retreat into his study to read. But my parents marriage survived the bad years and in their 60's they became more comfortable with each other, like good roomates (with separate bedrooms). The whole thing turned me off to marriage completely. I saw his life as a life wasted. He gave up his dreams for an illusion, basically a few good years at the beginning of his marriage and then 20 years of crap and finally a few ok, boring years at the end.... then dead from cancer.
