It’s just representative of the drift towards emotion rather than reason as the primary tool of debate. It goes along with the feminisation of society, as has been mentioned elsewhere in this sub.

Essentially yes, by bringing up "Lived Experience" they are trying to treat anecdotal evidence as more valuable than it otherwise might be..
After all, this isn't simply anecdote.. its someones "Very real lived experience!"

Add onto that.. the "lived experience" of women is valuable / important
The lived experience of men is not valuable / important and is often seen as irrelevant..

Just take a step back and watch how in debates / discussions when it comes to bringing up the 'Lived Experiences" of people the only people they care about listening to are women..

Look. Your lived experience could be that all uncles are rapists.

But once you look up a study, you find that (for instance) only 10% of uncles do in fact rape.

The mere idea that some data suggest you are wrong, sets you off. And when debating it online and people bring up the fact that 90% of uncles doesnt rape... and you cant argue the inherit evils of uncles... you proclaim the lived experience. By showing me these facts, you are denying my lived experience!

Its like arguing with feelings. They cancle eachother out. Never bring feelings or lived experiences to a discussion

So, its what you lived that is SUPPOSED to drive a narrative.

I explained to someone about how I grew up in the ghetto and what I saw with drug raids and how it affected my school (had metal detectors and bunch of other things to keep drugs out of the schools)

And I was told I was discriminating POC lived experiences, taking from them, and I never could've experienced it because im white.

Its obviously wrong 😂 but im just explaining the one time I can explain when it was used against me to hopefully explain.

Lived experience is anecdotal evidence. It's the weakest form of evidence there is.

It also isn't weighted equally. Some people's live experience is sacred (women's) and others are dismissed.

Yes and no. Its a tough argument in general. As someone who’s always an exception for some frustrating fucking reason I have this issue a lot. And discounting the individual is not something anyone should do. But an exception should be treated as exactly that, an exception. Doesn’t mean their experience is invalid, but most likely just uncommon. But we should not dictate larger changes based on exceptions, as long as they can still get the help they need.

It's really shorthand for 'lived experience of oppression'. People using the term don't put the same value of the lived experiences of straight white men, for example.

The reason oppressed people's lived experiences are given more weight is the belief that oppressed people have a better view of the world. The idea is that oppressed people have to understand their oppressor's culture and also their own experiences. Oppressors don't have to understand oppressed people. So oppressed people have special insight into the world and therefore should be listened to.

The idea is not entirely wrong. MRAs tend to understand feminism better than a lot of feminists. The real problem is using an fixed oppressor/oppressed framework, that can't recognise other forms of injustice or oppression.

Anecdotal evidence is nothing more than a random collection of moments you've experienced first hand.
Lived experienced is when the objective truth or other peoples experiences don't line up with your world view and you need to cherry pick your own moments of anecdotal evidence in order to dismiss any opposing views.

I have lived in a racially diverse area in my home city in the UK. There are some issues within different groups (Hindus and Sikhs against Muslims, Some South Asians against Blacks and Poles, Pakistanis against Somalians / Afghans and Poles / Irish against some non-whites). Crime is an issue in these areas, but the crimes are often done by opportunists in gangs or to those involved in dodgy shit. There is a gang problem. but that's because it's a mix of people not wanting to do well or learned behaviour without those taking responsibility. Vast majority of people are law abiding, and there is a community spirit despite some the odd bit of trouble. You get businessmen and community leaders of all races donating to the community and for the needy. The issue as well, a fair few of the young people are entitled. Their parents and grandparents had to work for what they want!

There are areas in my home city that are dominated by the Muslim faith. A lot of this is because some of the local mosques are funded by the wrong people (mainly from Jihadists in Pakistan), and their parents and grandparents aren't happy and will withdraw them from there in most cases. The issue is, it's again a generation mostly acting entitled and not having to work with and towards what they're up against. This is coming from immigrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh who came to the UK in the 1960s/70s. However, these places (the more mainstream ones) do care for the wider community.

It's understandable people will want to be with "their own people", but patronising them and bringing up grudges from centuries ago (as what happened since the death of Queen Elizabeth 2nd) is not the way forward. The vast majority of people in those areas don't like be spoken to that way. My closest friend is black and he feels these SJW / keyboard warriors don't represent him. Yes his grandparents and his parent(s) experienced racism in the 60s, 70s and 80s when they first came / established themselves in the UK, but they worked hard to overcome the barriers. It was being in a strange country and seen as strange. In time acceptance happened.

I've had homophobic taunts, but to me I shrug it off. If people call me silly names on social media. I ignore. A comedy from the 1970s or 1980s when my parents were young doesn't offend me. Heck my favourite comedy is "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme" in the late 90s / early 00s that has a female lead who says things "lesbo alert" and "turns my stomach" but I laugh. It was a sign of that time! I've hung around with hetero guys who have said "You'd fuck him" and just laughed it off and said yes lol. I will say this, most of the bitchiness I've had has been from other gay guys!

Being male, I had a reputation damage due to calling out abuse by a female. Had she been a guy, she'd have had everything thrown at her.

Lived Experience derives directly from the post-modernist misusage of solipsism. The idea is that each person is experiencing their own reality, instead of experiencing a part of a shared reality. If that were valid, this experience would be beyond refutation. The only functional difference between lived experience and anecdotal evidence is that lived experience will also be brought up in argument over a particular incident. Of course, this requires us to apply a result of assuming our experienced reality does not exist to said experienced reality.

Anecdotal evidence is what you call it when you are trying to conduct scientific research. In real life, it's called first hand experience, or an eye witness account. You can't always use it to write a scientific paper...but you can use it to make personal evaluations about life.

I feel that this may become a double-edged sword( hopefully I'm wrong)

So for instance if a feminist tells me that women don't abuse their children or their husband, and I say well I've experienced( lived) violence( and at least 4 out of the 5 categories of DV) and I can only prove some of the incidents if I'm lucky( photos) because my abuser made sure there was no one to witness these abuses or hid/destroyed the evidence, does that make my experience lived?.

I suspect that lived experience has in some cases become anecdotal evidence because people interpret( with their own bias or agenda) what they see rather than state what they see without bias.

Bearing in mind, many of us already have trouble being believed despite showing non-physical signs of abuse.

maybe they should use "narrative" to describe what they are stating.

Most people project their thoughts and expertise onto others, and don't consider that it could be an outlier. It's a good point to start looking into things, but it's very unreliable and can't be used to draw conclusions.

This is relavant because this helps paint the picture of how humans are. So there will be some knowledge base of what researchers think is happening but that can be outdated or missing parts.

When people explain their lived experiences it’s like adding to that knowledge base.

Like say the knowledge base has a certain perception of sexual assault. It’s this thing men do to women and women get traumatized. Well a man can come in and share their lived experiences of being sexually assaulted by a woman. this adds to the knowledge base that “wait hold on, maybe there is more to sexual assault than what we know right now”.

Another example is when people study indigenous cultures in Canada they have textbooks and official scholarly media they go from. But talking to an indigenous person about their experience regarding something, hearing that lived experienced, can provide a better understanding of concepts.
