Honestly, it's just extremism - either someone somewhere will misinterpret something and take it too far, or someone somewhere is going to see an existing banner and hide under it in order to preach their ideologies with lessened fear of criticism or debate.

To be honest, I think it happens with all groups and movements to some extent. /r/theredpill seems to be a fairly good example of this in our fledgling MR movement (not to say that they everything they say is utter bullshit, but from my brief forays into the community they seem quite misandric, which MR isn't about). You see it similarly in religion - Westboro Baptist Church in Christianity, "hate Mosques" in Islam (although no specific group names come to mind, likely due to my lack of knowledge of Islamic groups), and of course militant forces and such. There's likely similar groups in Buddhism and Hinduism, though again, these are not the majority.

Of course, if you want to see Atheist hate-groups, look no further than /r/atheism.

I honestly wish I had decent ideas on how to combat extremism, but it seems to me that it's very difficult for outsiders to do (and, hence, as an outsider to the feminist movement, there's not a huge amount I can do to the misandrist feminism offshoot beyond trying to call it out). Internally, though, groups can encourage rational consideration and debate upon themselves, avoiding the development of sacred, protected, critic-proof words (as I'd suggest "feminist" and "feminism" have become, though again, feminism isn't the only movement this has happened to), and calling out and rejecting extremism when it's seen.

So, tell me, were women required to serve their elected government in the military like men were for the vote? Did the suffragettes demand women were conscripted alongside men in order to gain suffrage?

Or did they hand out white feathers to men and boys in civilian clothing to shame them into the trenches? Did they demand the government conscript men into the military during the Great War?

Along with Norah Dacre Fox (later known as Norah Elam), Pankhurst toured the country making recruiting speeches. Her supporters handed the white feather to every young man they encountered wearing civilian dress and bobbed up at Hyde Park meetings with placards: "Intern Them All". The Suffragette appeared again on 16 April 1915 as a war paper and on 15 October changed its name to Britannia. There, week by week, Pankhurst demanded the military conscription of men and the industrial conscription of women into "national service", as it was termed. She called also for the internment of all people of enemy race, men and women, young and old, found on these shores, and for a more complete and ruthless enforcement of the blockade of enemy and neutral nations. She insisted that this must be "a war of attrition".

Feminism never was about equality, they posed as crusaders for equal rights but they have in fact simply been female chauvinists advocating misandry and bigotry. In the same manner feminists claim to be for equality today, they claimed so in the past. You don't believe them to be today, so why do you believe them to have been so in the past?

It's of course not possible to prove logically whether any one of those posters were or were not feminists. But that shouldn't prompt us to hand feminists control of which of their beliefs and teachings we can and can't talk about, and the ability to claim any feminist who gets called out "isn't a real feminist, maybe, so you don't get to discuss them." They're well practiced in walking grey areas, playing games and controlling definitions to avoid being held accountable. We know where these misandrist ideas primarily come from and it's not anonymous trolls on the internet pretending to be radical feminists because they hate women.

I suppose even then, it doesn't matter whether they were feminists or not. The goal should be attacking the hate they were spewing, not attacking the name of feminism itself. If we follow the flow of hate we know where we'll find the fountainheads, but we don't need to call them by name to prove that they're assholes.
