I'm a woman, and I don't know if its ok for me to post here, but I want to say that I agree with you. The women you work with, if they feel it is necessary, should ask a coworker individually to walk them to their car. Going to the management was kind of a dick move. While chivalrous, I doubt it is in your job description to act as a body guard for your coworkers.

That said, I personally have never wanted this for myself, even when coworkers have offered to walk me to the train (i work in the city). The only time I accepted was after I had been jumped near my home, and a few weeks later got into an altercation with a junkie while walking to the train after work. Luckily, another coworker was with me, who also took the train, and of course he told everyone about it at work so they always made sure someone walked me to the train... Which I honestly found embarrassing.

A manager cannot make you stay past your scheduled shift. If your manager is asking you to stay, ask him if he's going to pay you. If refuses, leave. If you are harassed, lawyer up. A lot of companies get in trouble for making people stay past their shift.

Tell the boss to designate an area where all the closing shift parks. Once closing time comes around if your not ready to walk with the group then you'll have to walk alone.

I wouldn't wait for these people. It's their responsibility to be ready to walk when you're ready.

I understand how you feel about that, but don't take it seriously. You don't have to be a bodyguard. Hopefully you got it off your chest, I know when management says something that pisses me off I feel better when I vent, especially when it's stupid rule you know they're not actually going to enforce and isn't a big deal to worry about.

Your manager should really be walking them out if s/he's so concerned, really.

One of the issues with becoming involved in any movement is the perfectly normal reaction of applying that movement to all facets of your life and looking for a correlation.

Let me ask you this - if it had been a male co-worker, would you have been offended? If I, as a straight male with LE background, were to say to you, "Hey, can you hang a second while I finish this up so we can head out together?", would you be offended?

Because the thing is, bad things are more likely to happen to people who are alone, especially under the cover of darkness. In the terms of statistics, you can even claim it is MORE likely for a violent crime to happen to a male in the same situation.

So, protection of others isn't a male/female issue, it's a human issue. These people are your co-workers, possibly your friends, part of your community. Your responsibility to make sure they aren't victimized doesn't come from you being a male, it comes from the fact that you're a decent human being.

Now, if your female co-workers wouldn't do the same for you, you have an issue. If you're being required to put in extra hours because you're a male, that's an issue. If you're threatened with firing because you don't want to participate, that's an issue.

But just being asked to help out the community because you can is not an issue. I would hope, as a decent human being, you'd want to insure that criminals are discouraged, and know that your work community is not a community to be victimized.

So, I ask you to look at this as a human issue - it's in everyone's best interest to discourage crime - not a MensRights issue, unless you can directly link your sexuality to an unfair or discriminatory requirement.

If you object on having to wait because they are not competent in their work, then fine, make the issue that: I don't mind leaving as a group as long as everyone gets done at a reasonable time.

If your issue is that everyone should be able to defend themselves, then fine, organize a group lesson from a security contractor.

But don't sit back and claim that crime prevention and safety is a MensRights thing - it's not, it's a human rights thing. It benefits everyone to prevent victimization.

Is society skewed toward looking at men to provide security? Yes, and that's something that should be addressed. But Men's Rights is not about seeking victimization, it's about preventing it, for everyone.

Dear Sir,

It may have come to your attention that the manager on the second shift recently asked the male staff on the shift to wait for 20-30 minutes while inefficient female staff completed their work and needed assistance in walking to their cars in security when they finished.

You are probably aware that this opens your company up to numerous potential problems, notably:

That by asking male employees to perform this task, you are admitting that your security is in adequate rendering you liable to claims should any attacks take place.
By specifically asking male employees to perform this service after their shifts have finished, you are opening yourself to charges of both sex discrimination and of not adhering to working contracts, both of which could potentially be costly to your enterprise.

This is sexual discrimination, and absolutely horrendous management. It is not your responsibility to care for grown adults. If I were you I would write a complaint to HR. They can't retaliate against you, unless they want to make the problem worse.

The females I work with don't like walking out alone in evening either. But as a response, my managers have never said "men, protect the women." It has been said "bring a buddy." It was also never implied that only women face this problem.

They want you to stay and work for 20-30 minutes longer to get more work out of you. If you don't want to challenge this, consider leaving at your usual time. "My wife expects me at home," if anyone asks, even if you don't have a wife. Or if that's not an option, arrive 20-30 minutes late.

Are you salaried or hourly?

If you're hourly, I'd ask that manager what time he thinks you should wait until to clock out. If he says "8:30", then hey...manager approved overtime. If he says "8:00", then he's just said "go home at 8:00".

He's management, if HE wants to wait around to guard the great vagina exodus every night, he's welcome to. I bet if this was made known to the women, they would not welcome the condescension though. Maybe make a surreptitious mention to whichever one is known to be most "outspoken"

This happens where I work (retail), but it's the manager who insists because he believes women aren't safe alone. I am in charge of the registers, and at night he will make a man stand with me to keep me safe. Women also aren't allowed to collect carriages in the parking lot. I protest when he insists on these things because first of all, like you, we are in an extremely safe area. Secondly, it isn't the job of the men to protect me. Third, I am in no more danger being outside than the 17 year old boys who work for the company. It's stupid and I'm sick of it.

Back in the day our parking was assigned by how long you've worked there and things were great. We had a young female HR who was fair and kicked ass, we got a cake on our birth day.

Once she left and we got an older female HR things started changing, a women was robbed on her way to her car in another part of LA so what does our HR do, reassign parking spots giving all the spots near the front door and rear door to women. Because she wanted to give peace of mind to the ladies...we complained but all that came of it was being shamed or worse not even getting a parking spot.

Some of the guys had to park down the street while brand new hires had spots that some guys had earned over 5 years. Worse part, guys don't get cake or a card on our birthdays only the women get those...Yup just fanfuckingtastic, I miss our cool HR lady.

To be honest, I think you're overreacting. I honestly doubt this has anything do with sex organs and everything to do with the undeniable fact that men generally have more upper body strength than women and your company doesn't want to shell out extra money for security guards for a handful of skittish women. I can't say as I blame them.

Since it's a suggestion, you don't have to if you don't feel comfortable doing so. If it becomes more than a suggestion, you've got more to legitimately complain about.

Note that I'm 6'1" and 170lbs. I doubt a month goes by where I'm not put in the position where I'm asked to do something like this. However, it's one thing to just prevent a potential assault or mugging by traveling in numbers and something else entirely playing the role of a security guard.

I'm not a security guard and unless I'm being paid to be a security guard, I'm not going to put my self at risk in an area with higher than more crime -- especially at night -- unless it's me making that choice. Nor am I on someone else's schedule. If I were in your shoes, when I'm leaving, you're leaving with me. Otherwise, you're walking to your car by yourself. Unless I'm fishing for a date, I'm not staying late for someone else.
