It means you don't know much about each other. But otherwise such a question does not bother me on a date. I quite enjoy my work, I find it interesting, so I have something to talk about.

If she asked - how much you earn, how much do you invest per month, have you some debts... I would have to make sure I'm on a date and not with a financial advisor.

If a woman needs to ask me how much money I make, she's not of high enough character to be on a date with me.

She should be able to discern my ability to provide based on my personality, dress, mannerisms, attitude, if she lacks those skills, she's missed out on a very fundamental part of being a good woman, the ability to discern a good man.

You can vet her as she's vetting you by making it clear that you don't make a lot, and if she leaves, then you've probably dodged a bullet, but if she didn't, then you've certainly found a gem. Don't show anything that reflects your financial status though.

I agree to an extent that people in general, not just women, sometimes ask what you do for a living to gauge how much respect to give you and sometimes it's just an honest getting-to-know-you question. You can't gauge whether she's a gold digger based on that question alone so it helps to look for other context clues. In all seriousness I just tell people what I do when they ask. Doesn't make me feel uncomfortable at all.

Tell her you pray God provides. I use this all the time until I’ve vetted her enough to reveal what I really do. If she can stay with you after such a vague answer her interest is likely high. Once you sense she’s not 100% trying to leach off you feel free to proceed as you wish. Follow yohr intuition and be cognizant of her words and actions. Make sure she is not of a poverty or straggle struggle mindset like most women are now in days.

Men as providers is just the way it is. I’ve got mixed feelings about it I guess, both positive and negative.

Positive: I can provide and don’t mind sharing with the right person, I take a bit of pride in it even.

Negative: it’s a lot of pressure and stress to maintain constantly running on that wheel, trying to go faster and better with each pass. It’s easy to be resented or taken advantage of if you’re not careful. The world judges a man by what he has accomplished

When it comes to women I’ve found, some really like the status/career of a man, most don’t care or don’t show they care and in some cases it turns them off. I play it based on the moment and what clues they’ve dropped. Since I wear a jacket/tie/briefcase/nice shoes for work, if she comments positively on my attire I’ll shine it up a bit when the conversation turns to “what do you do?” Otherwise, I’ll usually undersell and just say I work for a bank.
