At the beginning of a relationship, it's easy to be yourself and show your flaws because it doesn't matter if the person rejects you. They are unimportant to your life and their disapproval won't hurt that badly. However, when they start accepting you and loving you, then they become more and more important as you continue to invest in the relationship. Eventually, they become such a critical part of your life and you can't afford (emotionally speaking) to lose them. The loss would be too devastating.

This causes a problem though, because then you can no longer freely show your flaws and be honest with them about who you are. Every time you do this you are risking them changing their mind and leaving you. Sometimes it becomes so extreme that you start avoiding this important person intentionally because you fear the possibility of fucking it up.

Some people here have said that they reject themselves before anyone has a chance to reject them. They don't approach women at all because they fear rejection so much. Eventually they may get over the initial hurdle and risk rejection, but this ultimately doesn't solve the problem, because the cost of rejection only gets higher over time. If they find a woman that agrees to date them, they will still have to hold her at arm's length to avoid getting hurt. The higher the stakes, the more carefully they will have to maintain their image to her.

Is there a solution to this? Men have said here that showing vulnerability in a relationship can cause it to terminate, but is there another way to deal with the problem besides closing yourself off, hiding yourself, or giving up on the idea of intimacy with your partner?
