They asked useless questions. They needed to show women and men profiles of average people of the opposite sex and ask if they'd date them. The result would have been far more skewed.

The average woman puts in more work to be attractive and desirable, so this finding makes sense. It’s a side effect of the greater need for women to have value within the FSM.

The traditional value of a man, which is to be a provider, has decreased now that women can largely provide for themselves and their families, and the education system has even shifted to disadvantage many men and benefit feminine learning styles, although most of this is due not to sexism but due to how the job market has changed. Many men continue to do well in STEM fields, of course, but those who come from a trades background have suffered.

I don't know why people are assuming that this is a a result of bias and not reflective of a real difference. I think the 'average' man, particularly the average single man, probably isn't as 'good' for a relationship as the average woman at first glance. Women tend to put more effort into upkeep and appearing like they would be good relationship prospects even while they're single and not actively looking, whereas single men who aren't players often revert to gross university-style bachelorhood until they find a woman they like and start actively pursuing her, so there's more 'downtime' when the average man looks like a bad prospect than there is with the average woman. I think the difference probably narrows once people are actually in a relationship and men up their ante, but that's not something people are necessarily going to think about if they're quickly totting up the average RMV of the men and women they know.

It's also worth noting that 52% of people didn't make a distinction between men and women and the 38% of people who did see men as worse may just be hanging out more with single men who act like I described above rather than men in relationships who are actively displaying value.

First problem I have with this study is that n=120 and with this :

Turning to relationship value, the mean level of agreement that the average man is good enough for a relationship with most women was 6.3 out of 10 (with a standard deviation of 2.6), compared to 7.3 (standard deviation of 2.1) for the equivalent question about women

If I got it correctly, this means results can vary for +/- 26% and +/-21%. on a scale 1-10. I think this is too big deviation to make any sane conclusion. We either need bigger sample pool or something else should change.

Correct if I am wrong.

I think this shows what I've observed in my day to day life: men care more about having someone, women care more about having the right one. I have no idea if this is the cause or effect of the marketplace. It makes sense either way.

To be fair: it's harder for a man to have a baby on his own than it is for a woman to have a baby on her own, so that's where her extra value comes in? Unless you've got upwards of 100k just lying around for surrogacy + donor egg, you "need" a woman whereas most women technically don't "need" a man these days (and I say technically because I do believe most women are happier wíth a partner).

There is a stereotype that the average man is after 1 thing and the average woman is looking for a meaningful relationship. That may be why some people thought the average women has greater relationship value.

The statistical difference was small though. Most participants considered men and women equally suitable.

I side with the majority. Career plans, financial instability, mental health and relationship baggage seems to be more influential than gender.

I think it's sort of true.
If everyone on the planet lost their sexual desire tomorrow, I'd guess that there would be a much greater proportion of men than women who'd voluntarily live in relative solitude and not go out of their way to form relationships.

Women seem more likely to enjoy the social aspects of a relationship in a more general way. They enjoy having "someone" and doing typical relationship stuff more than men inherently enjoy it. That could easily account for a gap that small.
