Over the past several years, I've noticed a clear trend toward clothing that deliberately emphasizes the butt.

Listen, I'm a guy, and I know just as much about fashion as the next, but these fashion trends largely came from the Kardashians, etc.

Before that, the fashion/body type sought after by women were a slim type. The type that had a flat stomach, and barely any big curves. The Britney Spears, The Christina Aguileras, The Sarah Michelle Gellars (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), hell, even women with big breasts still had to have a flat stomach/lack of huge bottom curves, like Kate Upton, Jennifer Love Hewitt etc.

Why do you think many hot women of that era went around with crop tops?

Most of the fashion trends of that time revolved around being slim and white. Then the Kardashians influenced fashion so much that now the body type is curvaceous, bottom heavy and racially ambiguous.

This is not really a recent trend — thongs above sweat pants or low rise jeans were prominent in the 2000s. As was cheeky very short booty shorts commonly found at Hollister, Abercrombie & Fitch, etc. Sheer dresses and mini skirts (even micro-minis) are being recycled from like 20-25 years ago.

I do not even think these are common styles outside of Tik Tok and Instragram. Like, most people are of the opinion that the thong above the pants looks low class. Most women do not dress like this and so I don't think this can be applied to "women" as a group.

Most women do not put on clothes in the morning going "I think I want to attract some men today" though they probably feel sexy in these clothes. And I don't think fashion trends are based on the desire to attract male attention either. Like in the past 5 years we've seen a resurgence in prairie dresses, puff sleeves, and midi dresses. Cottagecore had a HUGE moment from 2020-2024. Immediately following, fashion trends emphasized baggy and oversized silhouettes. These styles repel the male gaze, like they are entirely non-sexual and yet the trend happened anyway.

Lmao so many examples you have fun finding those? I’ve never really been thinking ‘I want male attention’ with these clothes unless I’m like deliberately thinking of a particular man. It’s more ‘I want to look hot’ (and trendy/cool most likely).

I can appreciate my own hotness and feel good. Then yes I can leave the house so other people appreciate but I’m not using it as a tool for dating per se, unless I have a ‘target’ in mind (usually not).

Local man discovers that fashion trends and beauty standards are cyclical.

Some decades focus on breasts, others on tiny waists, long legs, hips or butts. The Victorian bustle was literally designed to exaggerate women’s asses, so none of this is new.

Of course looking attractive plays a role in fashion. Where you lose me is assuming that looking attractive automatically means wanting attention from heterosexual men, as though women aren’t also influenced by trends, celebrities, social media, other women and their own reflection.

Before big butts, the trend was big tits and small butts (Britney Spears, Pamela Anderson). It's all about trends.

Before cargo pants and oversize, people wore skinny jeans, before skinny jeans it was cargo pants, oxford pants and jnco pants.

I don't think the role in fashion has changed during this trends. Some clothes are obviously designed to appeal sexually, some aren't.

When I go to the gym i've noticed the women are on the butt machines the most , and it's hard to use them therefore.

Some women have also worn push up bras on their first few dates with me. I think it's fine.

Adult women can wear what they want, but I hate when teens wear this and put a ton of make up and high heels so you first think they are 30 until they start talking. If my future daughter starts behaving like that I'd consider myself to have failed in parenting.

I primarily date women and I love butts and I show off my butt, not cause i want attention from men (and i mean id love attention from women but that’s beyond the point), but cause I love the way its framed along the rest of my body (i mean i also show off my muscles soooo) - but I usually do it through pants that show the shape off and shorts… not really see through stuff.

Also it isn’t really new, women’s pants have always drawn more attention to that region, and it often ebbs and flows in size. I mean sure a part of it is absolutely sexual attention from men, of course, it would be absurd to deny it - but a lot of it is also quite literally just people liking it on themselves and thinking it suits them better.

There is also an element of the photos you showed us. Some of these are outright influencers, and others are a result of thin material (if you wanna dig into the economics of fast fashion, then do so - cause a lot of that contexualizes what you’re talking about)
